Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The objective of this study was to develop a rapid and effective method of sexing juvenile sea bass with minimum labour and material. To this end, the gonad squash mount technique was applied along with macroscopic techniques for sexing a large number of experimental fish at the age of 215-275 days post fertilization (p.f.). At this age, 90% of the 3894 fish could be unambiguously sexed by macroscopic examination of their gonads, whereas the remaining proportion was identified using squash mount preparations (10%). This study reports mortality under laboratory conditions in unselected controls and two lines of juvenile Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas, previously selected for their high or low survival in the field during the summer period. Oysters were also deployed in field conditions and mortality between both conditions was then compared. In the laboratory, mortality was observed in all experiments and it always lasted for a week indicating that mortality under laboratory conditions was a short-term event. It was also shown that mortality could be repeated for a batch in several experiments using oysters which never experienced any abnormal mortality. L. vannamei postlarvae are normally raised with a protein dense diet (50% protein) rich in fishmeal. Part of the protein is utilized for energy purpose instead of protein synthesis. Based on a previous energy partitioning study, the effects of two isoenergetic compounded feed treatments - animal protein (AP) and vegetable protein and carbohydrates (VPC) - upon growth efficiency and energy budget of shrimp postlarvae and early juveniles were determined. Spontaneous swimming activity of 0-group common sole (Solea solea) was evaluated using a video-tracking system under laboratory conditions. An experiment was conducted during two consecutive days on individuals sampled in June, July, September and November (2004) in a coastal nursery ground (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France). In order to study genetic variability for survival during summer mortality events in the oyster Crassostrea gigas, a first generation (G1) was bred in 2001. 17 G1 half-sib families (HSF) were obtained ; each HSF was reared in three sites along the French coast during the summer period. Significant differences in survival were observed among HSF indicating a genetic basis for survival. In 2002, several HSF were selected on their survival performances to constitute a divergent selection (G2) (outbreed and inbred).
