In a previous study, dietary supplementation with arachidonic acid (ARA) to oysters Crassostrea gigas increased haemocyte numbers, phagocytosis, and production of reactive oxygen species level (ROS) by haemocytes (Delaporte et al., 2006). To assess if the observed stimulation of these cellular responses resulted from changes of ARA-related prostaglandin (PG) production, we analysed prostaglandin E2 metabolite (PGEM) content on the same oysters fed three levels of ARA. Dietary supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) could also induce an oxidative stress that could similarly increase cellular responses; therefore, two indicators of oxidative stress were analysed: peroxidation level and antioxidant defence status. Together the observed positive... |

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of honey, propolis, and bee pollen for the reversal of lipid peroxidation induced by tebuconazole (TEB) in South American catfish (Rhamdia quelen), in which the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), the activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and the concentrations of non-enzymatic antioxidants, reduced glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid, and non-protein thiols were assessed. Honey (0.125 g L-1) and bee pollen (0.05 g L-1) added to the water reverse the production of TBARS induced by TEB, while propolis demonstrated a pro-oxidant effect, inducing an increase in TBARS production. The data presented herein suggest that the addition of water to honey and... |

ABSTRACT The application of herbicides, even if selective, can cause biochemical and physiological changes, resulting in oxidative stress. This stress comes from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species produced due to exposure to the herbicide. However, plants have developed defense strategies, which can be enzymatic or non-enzymatic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological and metabolic changes such as photosynthetic parameters, oxidative damage and antioxidant enzyme activity of rice plants after applying herbicides. For this, a study was conducted in a greenhouse and laboratory and the treatments consisted of application of imazapic + imazapyr, quinclorac, bentazon, cyhalofop-butyl, penoxsulan, bispyribac-sodium and... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of forced molting using biochemical parameters and histopathological findings in laying hens. 36 Hyline W36 strain laying hens, 90 weeks old were chosen for this research. Eight of these chickens were randomly selected and placed in a cage as the control group before the molting program began. All the others 28 chickens were used for the forced molting program. Eight laying hens were slaughtered at the end of the molting program named as molting group. The remaining 20 hens were fed for 37 days, weighted and slaughtered when they reached the maximum egg production (80%) as postmolting group. Then, blood was analyzed for malondialdehyde, glutathione, catalase, glucose, calcium, phosphorus, albumin,... |

Water-deficit stress is a major abiotic stress that causes severe limitations on the productivity of sugarcane. To overcome of this problem, drought tolerance sugarcane cultivars should be developed and selected for planting. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the variation of electrolyte leakage (EL) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of sugarcane leaves under water-deficit stress conditions. The greenhouse experiment was conducted using two water regimes as the first factor [(i) well-watered and (ii) stressed at 90 to 100 days after planting (DAP) and recovery 100 to 110 DAP] and 10 sugarcane cultivars (Uthong 6, Khon Kaen 80, Khon Kaen 3, K86-161, 03-4-425, KU60-1, B34-164, Phill 66-07, Uthong 2 and LF82-2122) as the second factor. The development of natural insecticides would help to decrease the negative impact of synthetic insecticides. Fumigant toxicity of essential oil of Tagetes filifolia Lag (Asterales: Asteraceae) and its major compounds were evaluated against Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The essential oil and (E)-anethole were the most toxic at 24 h against adult insects (CL50 = 2.4 y 2.6 µL/mL water, respectively). Changes in the products of lipid peroxidation were evidenced by an increase in malondialdehyde content. Acetylcholinesterase activity in vitro, of T. castaneum adults, was also reported. (E)-anethole and estragole showed similar acetylcholinesterase inhibition (54... |

Lipid peroxidation and root elongation of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis were studied under stress conditions in response to aluminum (Al), a metal known to limit agricultural productivity in acidic soils primarily due to reduced root elongation. In Brazil, the Grancam 1277 hybrid (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) has been planted in the "Cerrado", a region of the country with a wide occurrence of acidic soils. The present study demonstrated that the hybrid exhibited root growth reduction and increased levels of lipid peroxidation after 24h of treatment with 100 µM of Al, which was followed by a reduction in lipid peroxidation levels and the recovery of root elongation after 48h of Al exposure, suggesting a rapid response to the early... |
