The influence of dietary supplementation of arachidonic acid on prostaglandin production and oxidative stress in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Seguineau, Catherine; Racotta, Ilie; Palacios, Elena; Delaporte, Maryse; Moal, Jeanne; Soudant, Philippe.
In a previous study, dietary supplementation with arachidonic acid (ARA) to oysters Crassostrea gigas increased haemocyte numbers, phagocytosis, and production of reactive oxygen species level (ROS) by haemocytes (Delaporte et al., 2006). To assess if the observed stimulation of these cellular responses resulted from changes of ARA-related prostaglandin (PG) production, we analysed prostaglandin E2 metabolite (PGEM) content on the same oysters fed three levels of ARA. Dietary supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) could also induce an oxidative stress that could similarly increase cellular responses; therefore, two indicators of oxidative stress were analysed: peroxidation level and antioxidant defence status. Together the observed positive...

Molecular identification of differentially regulated genes in the hydrothermal-vent species Bathymodiolus thermophilus and Paralvinella pandorae in response to temperature ArchiMer
Boutet, Isabelle; Jollivet, Didier; Shillito, Bruce; Moraga, Dario; Tanguy, Arnaud.
Background: Hydrothermal vents and cold seeps represent oases of life in the deep-sea environment, but are also characterized by challenging physical and chemical conditions. The effect of temperature fluctuations on vent organisms in their habitat has not been well explored, in particular at a molecular level, most gene expression studies being conducted on coastal marine species. In order to better understand the response of hydrothermal organisms to different temperature regimes, differentially expressed genes (obtained by a subtractive suppression hybridization approach) were identified in the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus and the annelid Paralvinella pandorae irlandei to characterize the physiological processes involved when animals are subjected...

Conjugated linoleic acid and fatty acid binding protein as antioxidants InVet
Piergiacomi,V.A.; Palacios,A..
Studies were carried out to determine the effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and rat liver cytosolic protein enriched in fatty acid binding protein (FABP) on the non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation of rat liver microsomes. The inhibition of lipid peroxidation was more evident when the FABP containing fraction obtained from CLA-group was used with either kind of microsomes (CLA and control). The chemiluminescence and polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of rat liver microsomes changed after CLA treatment. When native and peroxidized microsomes obtained from control group were compared, the most affected polyunsaturated fatty acids were: C18:2, C18:3 and C20:4, while in CLA-group C20:4 was mainly peroxidized The simultaneous analysis of...

Antioxidant activity of bee products added to water in tebuconazole-exposed fish Neotropical Ichthyology
Ferreira,Daiane; Unfer,Taís Cristina; Rocha,Hélio Carlos; Kreutz,Luiz Carlos; Koakoski,Gessi; Barcellos,Leonardo José Gil.
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of honey, propolis, and bee pollen for the reversal of lipid peroxidation induced by tebuconazole (TEB) in South American catfish (Rhamdia quelen), in which the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), the activity of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and the concentrations of non-enzymatic antioxidants, reduced glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid, and non-protein thiols were assessed. Honey (0.125 g L-1) and bee pollen (0.05 g L-1) added to the water reverse the production of TBARS induced by TEB, while propolis demonstrated a pro-oxidant effect, inducing an increase in TBARS production. The data presented herein suggest that the addition of water to honey and...

Biochemical and Physiological Changes in Rice Plants Due to the Application of Herbicides1 Planta Daninha
LANGARO,A.C.; AGOSTINETTO,D.; OLIVEIRA,C.; SILVA,J.D.G.; BRUNO,M.S..
ABSTRACT The application of herbicides, even if selective, can cause biochemical and physiological changes, resulting in oxidative stress. This stress comes from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species produced due to exposure to the herbicide. However, plants have developed defense strategies, which can be enzymatic or non-enzymatic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological and metabolic changes such as photosynthetic parameters, oxidative damage and antioxidant enzyme activity of rice plants after applying herbicides. For this, a study was conducted in a greenhouse and laboratory and the treatments consisted of application of imazapic + imazapyr, quinclorac, bentazon, cyhalofop-butyl, penoxsulan, bispyribac-sodium and...

Natural gaps associated with oxidative stress in Willisornis poecilinotus (Aves: Thamnophilidae) in a tropical forest Acta Amazonica
Gomes,Andreza de Lourdes Souza; Gonçalves,Andrey Felipe Gomes; Vieira,José Luiz Fernandes; Marceliano,Maria Luiza Videiro; Silva,José Maria Cardoso da.
Natural disturbances in tropical forests modify the availability and quality of resources and alter the patterns of bird distribution. These environmental changes increase the metabolic rate and disrupt the redox balance promoting oxidative stress. This study aimed to compare the abundance of Willisornis poecilinotus between gaps and the understory of a forest with undisturbed canopy at Caxiuanã National Forest. The abundance was correlated with vegetation heights. The oxidative stress and the stress promoting factors were determined in both sites of sampling. We captured 81 specimens of W. poecilinotus. The number of captures was high in gaps. The specimens sampled at gaps showed high levels of oxidative stress. The biomarkers of oxidative stress were...

Metallothionein and lipid peroxidation as markers to assess health status of chronically oiled Magellanic penguins in Argentina Acta Toxicol. Argent.
Romero,María Belén; Polizzi,Paula; Chiodi,Leila; Robles,Alicia; Rodríguez Heredia,Sergio; Gerpe,Marcela.
Chronic oiling affects seabirds, with short (individual survival) and long-term (dynamics of population) effects. Magellanic penguin is the most affected species in Argentina. The aim was to evaluate the use of blood biochemical-molecular biomarkers (MT and TBARs) to assess health status of Magellanic penguin exposed to chronic environmental oiling, in addition with routine hematological analyses (differential WBC count and PCV). Oiled specimens presented significant higher RBC metallothionein and TBARs concentrations than those from shelter; while routine hematological parameters were within normal levels for penguins and did not show any difference between both groups. These results demonstrated the higher sensibility of both biomarkers, evidencing...

Temporal dynamics of the response to Al stress in Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alcântara,Berenice K. de; Pizzaia,Daniel; Piotto,Fernando A.; Borgo,Lucélia; Brondani,Gilvano E.; Azevedo,Ricardo A..
Lipid peroxidation and root elongation of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis were studied under stress conditions in response to aluminum (Al), a metal known to limit agricultural productivity in acidic soils primarily due to reduced root elongation. In Brazil, the Grancam 1277 hybrid (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) has been planted in the "Cerrado", a region of the country with a wide occurrence of acidic soils. The present study demonstrated that the hybrid exhibited root growth reduction and increased levels of lipid peroxidation after 24h of treatment with 100 µM of Al, which was followed by a reduction in lipid peroxidation levels and the recovery of root elongation after 48h of Al exposure, suggesting a rapid response to the early...

Mitochondrial DNA damage associated with lipid peroxidation of the mitochondrial membrane induced by Fe2+-citrate Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida,Andréa M.; Bertoncini,Clélia R.A.; Borecký,Jiri; Souza-Pinto,Nadja C.; Vercesi,Aníbal E..
Iron imbalance/accumulation has been implicated in oxidative injury associated with many degenerative diseases such as hereditary hemochromatosis, beta-thalassemia, and Friedreich's ataxia. Mitochondria are particularly sensitive to iron-induced oxidative stress - high loads of iron cause extensive lipid peroxidation and membrane permeabilization in isolated mitochondria. Here we detected and characterized mitochondrial DNA damage in isolated rat liver mitochondria exposed to a Fe2+-citrate complex, a small molecular weight complex. Intense DNA fragmentation was induced after the incubation of mitochondria with the iron complex. The detection of 3' phosphoglycolate ends at the mtDNA strand breaks by a 32P-postlabeling assay, suggested the involvement of...
