Shellfish aquaculture is often positioned as an adaptive alternative to traditional resource industries, but the social and cultural effects of expanding production on coastal/marine social-ecological systems are unclear. Reporting on a multimethods study, we present perceptions about shellfish aquaculture collected through interviews, participant-employed photography, and a household survey in British Columbia, Canada. The report presents a survey of marine related activities in France and an assessment of their economic weight in terms of value added and employment estimates. A brief outline of the recent past and present economic situation of these activities, and of their position on international markets is given. The survey presents the commercial sector, including marine resource exploitation, manufacturing activities and services, followed by the public sector, including the Navy, state intervention at sea, coastal environment protection and marine sciences. A summary gives an overall estimation of marine value added and employment.

Nitrogen availability often limits biological productivity in marine systems, where inorganic nitrogen, such as ammonium is assimilated into the food web by bacteria and photoautotrophic eukaryotes. Recently, ammonium assimilation was observed in kleptoplast-containing protists of the phylum foraminifera, possibly via the glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase (GS/GOGAT) assimilation pathway imported with the kleptoplasts. Isoprenoid and branched GDGT-based proxies for surface sediments from marine, fjord and lake environments in Chile ArchiMer

Proxies based on glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) lipids from archaea [isoprenoid GDGTs] and bacteria [branched (br) GDGTs] in 33 surface sediments from marine, fjord and lake systems between 25°S and 50°S in Chile were analyzed. The regional TEXH86 calibration obtained from the marine and fjord sediments and mean annual surface temperature (T = 59.6 × TEXH86 + 33.0; r2 0.9; n = 23) is statistically identical to the global ocean calibration based on suspended particulate material in terms of slope, but not in terms of intercept. A rare and unusual new bittiine genus with two new species from the South Pacific (Cerithiidae, Gastropoda) ArchiMer

A new genus, Limatium gen, n., and two new species, L. pagodula sp, n, and L. aureum sp, n. are described, found on outer slopes of barrier reefs and fringing reefs in the South Pacific. They are rare for cerithiids, which typically occur in large populations. The two new species arc represented by 108 specimens sampled over a period of 30 years, only 16 of which were collected alive. Three subadults from the Philippines and Vanuatu likely represent a third species. Whole body amino acid composition of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and turbot (Psetta maxima) with an estimation of their IAA requirement profiles ArchiMer

The amino acid compositions of whole body tissue of European seabass, gilthead seabream and turbot of two different size classes were determined. No significant differences were detected between species and the composition was not affected by body size. Based on whole body indispensable amino acids (IAA) to total IAA ratios (A/E ratios), the IAA requirement profiles for the three species were estimated and compared to data available to date for some amino acids, obtained using dose-response curves.

Future change in ocean productivity: Is the Arctic the new Atlantic? ArchiMer

One of the most characteristic features in ocean productivity is the North Atlantic spring bloom. Responding to seasonal increases in irradiance and stratification, surface phytopopulations rise significantly, a pattern that visibly tracks poleward into summer. While blooms also occur in the Arctic Ocean, they are constrained by the sea-ice and strong vertical stratification that characterize this region. However, Arctic sea-ice is currently declining, and forecasts suggest this may lead to completely ice-free summers by the mid-21st century. Complete genome sequence and whole-genome phylogeny of Kosmotoga pacifica type strain SLHLJ1T from an East Pacific hydrothermal sediment ArchiMer

Kosmotoga pacifica strain SLHLJ1T is a thermophilic chemoorganoheterotrophic bacterium isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal sediment. It belongs to the physiologically homogeneous Thermotogaceae family. Here, we describe the phenotypic features of K. pacifica together with its genome sequence and annotation. The chromosome has 2,169,170 bp, organized in one contig. A total of 1897 candidate protein-encoding genes and 177 RNA genes were identified. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain is distantly related to sequences of some relatives classified in the same genus (K. olearia 7.02% and K. shengliensis 7.83%), with dissimilarity percentages close to the threshold generally described for genus delineation. Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world's oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits.

Electronic decision-support tools are now an essential component of government strate gies to battle non-native species, with taxon-specific, paper-based risk analysis schemes often being replaced by taxon-generic tools. This study reports on the development of a decision-support tool for aquatic species, the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), which replaces five taxon-specific toolkits for amphibians, freshwater and marine fish and invertebrates (FISK, MFISK, FI-ISK, MI-ISK, Amph-ISK). Late Holocene oceanographic and climate change from the western European margin: the results of the HOLSMEER project ArchiMer

The underlying aim of the HOLSMEER project has been to improve our understanding of natural climate variability through the search for, interpretation and quantification of, climatic variability in very high-resolution shallow marine records from Atlantic Europe covering the last 2000 years. This has been achieved through detailed analyses of a series of coastal and shallow marine sites spanning the Atlantic seaboard from Iberia to western Norway, and extending across to Iceland.
