This study investigates the stratigraphic evolution of the Late Oligocene - Early Miocene carbonate platforms of the Yadana area (offshore Myanmar). Well data, regional 2D and local 3D seismic surveys allow the identification of three shallow-water carbonate platforms (Yadana, 3DF and 3DE) showing various morphologic and stratigraphic patterns influenced by the presence of a paleohigh. Though the late Miocene "Messinian Salinity Crisis" has been intensely researched along the circum-Mediterranean basins, few studies have focused on the central part of the Mediterranean Basin and, especially, the pre-salt deposits. To improve our knowledge of the Messinian events, it is imperative to better understand this domain. In this study, we provide a more complete understanding of this central domain in the Provence Basin. High-resolution seismic data have been acquired in June 2008 on the Armorican Shelf (AS), in the northern Bay of Biscay, in order to reassess its stratigraphic architecture in detail and to study the impact of eustasy, tectonic and sediment delivery on the margin sedimentary record. Several profiles show fluvial-type incisions of several tens of meters (up to 54 m) associated to a widespread erosion surface. Several hypotheses are proposed for the stratigraphic position of this surface and incisions. We suggest Middle to Late Miocene age. The Algerian margin has originated from the opening of the Algerian basin about 25-30 Ma ago. The central margin provides evidence for large-scale normal faults of Oligo-Miocene age, whereas transcurrent tectonics characterizes the western margin. A set of NW-SE oriented dextral transform faults was active during basin opening and divided the 600 km long central margin into segments of similar to 120-150 km. The upper Miocene, Plio-Quaternary, and present-day tectonic setting is, however, compressional and supports the occurrence of a margin inversion, a process still poorly documented worldwide. Between c. 23 and 8 Ma, western Amazonia was occupied by the vast Pebas long-lived lake/wetland system. The Pebas system had a variety of influences over the evolution of Miocene and modern Amazonian biota; it formed a barrier for the exchange of terrestrial biota, a pathway for the transition of marine biota into freshwater Amazonian environments, and formed the stage of remarkable radiations of endemic molluscs and ostracods. The lithological variation of the Pebas Formation has furthermore enhanced edaphic heterogeneity in western Amazonia, sustaining present-day high terrestrial diversity in the region. |

Crustaceans remain poorly known from the Miocene of Jamaica. Herein, we report three species from the upper Miocene August Town Formation of Fowl House Spring, parish of St. Thomas, southeast Jamaica; poorly preserved propodi of a mud shrimp, “Callianassa” sp.; the anterior part of the carapace of Mithraculus sp. aff. Mithraculus coryphe (Herbst); and the cirripede Tetraclita sp. cf. T. stalactifera (Lamarck). Mithraculus sp. aff. M. coryphe at Fowl House Spring considerably extends the stratigraphic occurrence of the genus in the Antillean region down into the Miocene. Hitherto, fossil T. stalactifera in the Caribbean was known from the Plio-Pleistocene of Curaçao and the Pleistocene of Venezuela. |

The insectivore assemblages from the Ramblian stratotype near Calamocha (Spain) are described, as well as those from San Roque 4A and 4B, two Ramblian localities near the Aragonian stratotype. Two new species are described, the erinaceid Galerix remmerti, and the shrew Clapasorex alvarezae. Both the percentages and the diversity of insectivores are higher in the Lower Ramblian, suggesting more humid conditions in zone Z than in zone A. Introduction Research of Miocene and Pliocene insectivores has a long history in Germany. Already in the middle of the 19th century Miocene insectivore species have been described from South German localities. Most of these were authored by Herman von Meyer, who deserves to be named a pioneer of German insectivores research. Weisenau, today part of the city of Mainz, is the type locality of Dimylus paradoxus described by von Meyer (1846:473). Haslach near Ulm yielded the type of Cordylodon haslachensis, also described by von Meyer (1859: 174). An incomplete odontocete (Mammalia, Cetacea) skull from Middle Miocene Miste Bed (near Winterswijk in the eastern part of The Netherlands) is described as Vanbreenia trigonia, a new genus and species. The skull exhibits a short rostrum with only two maxillary teeth for each toothrow and with narrow and toothless apical portion exclusively formed by the premaxilla. Considering this last character, the specimen could belong to the Eurhinodelphinidae even if a certain attribution is not possible because of the incompleteness of the specimen. Vanbreenia n. gen. could represent a specialized adaptation to bottom suction feeding among the eurhinodelphinids. |

The identity of the subgenera Isocrassina Chavan, 1950, Laevastarte Hinsch, 1952, and Ashtarotha Dall, 1903, of the genus Astarte Sowerby, 1816 in the family Astartidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) is discussed. Isocrassina has been widely used for Pliocene species in the North Sea Basin. Here it is demonstrated, that this is based on a redefinition of this subgenus, which excludes its type-species. As the North Sea species differ considerably from the type-species of Isocrassina in aspects of ornament and details of the hinge, it is concluded that they should be placed in the genus Laevastarte. Two extant hydrobiid species from the lower Tapajos river of Brazil are redescribed. Potamopyrgus amazonicus Haas, 1949, is assigned to the genus Dyris Conrad, 1871. At least eleven species from Miocene deposits of Western Amazonia are assigned to Dyris, a genus that was previously assumed to be extinct. The apertural features of Sioliella effusa Haas, 1949, are considered indicative of a close relationship to Miocene Amazonian taxa formaly assigned to Eubora Kadolsky, 1980. Sioliella ovata spec. nov., a Miocene species resembling S. effusa is described. The two Tapajos species can be regarded as relicts of a speciose, endemic, Miocene Western Amazonian molluscan fauna. |

The presence of Galerix molars in the South German fossil locality Hammerschmiede 3 is interpreted as evidence for a reimmigration of West European origin into the North Alpine Foreland Basin at the transition of the Middle to Late Miocene. The brief re-appearence of Galerix in southern Germany can be used as a biostratigraphic marker that allows promising correlations between local biostratigraphic subdivisions from Spain and Germany, suggesting that, contrary to previous thought, the Hammerschmiede locality may antedate the hipparionine horses’ appearance event. The Cerro de los Batallones (Los Batallones Butte) is located in the central-northern area of the Madrid Basin, central Spain. Nine vertebrates localities containing a large variety of mammals of Upper Vallesian Age (Late Miocene) have been found associated with the sediments forming the butte. From bottom to top, these sediments consist of magnesian lutite beds (Unit I), paleosols formed of sepiolite and opal (Unit II), and siliclastic, marlstone and carbonate beds (Unit III).
