Assessment of selenium mineralization and availability from catch crops Organic Eprints

Selenium (Se) release from four plant species (Indian mustard, fodder radish, Italian ryegrass and hairy vetch) was measured under controlled leaching conditions and in a pot incubation experiment as part of a study of the potential for using these plant species as Se catch crops. Catch crops may reduce Se leaching and, by subsequent release of Se from the plant material, increase the available Se for succeeding crops. Plants grown both without and with Se addition (250 g Se/ha) were tested. In the leaching experiment, frozen plant material was incorporated into soil columns and incubated at room temperature for up to 19 weeks. Ökologischer Landbau auf leichten Böden - Ertragsparameter und Bodenfruchtbarkeitskennziffern aus dem Demonstrationsversuch Ackerbausysteme in Blumberg bei Berlin Organic Eprints

In einem langzeit-Feldversuch in Blumerg (bei Berlin) wurden seit 1993 landwirtschaftliche Nutzungssysteme miteinander verglichen. Untersucht und verglichen wurde die Entwicklung der Erträge, der Nährstoffzustand und biologische Parameter der Sandböden unter konventioneller und biologischer Bewirtschaftung. 7 Jahre nach Versuchsbeginn waren die Erträge der konventionellen Variante um 27% höher als die in der biologischen Variante. Es wurden nur geringe Unterschiede zwischen den Nährstoffgehalten der Anbausysteme. Die potentielle Bodenfruchtbarkeit, die in einem Gefäßversuch untersucht wurde, schien im biologischen Wirtschaftssystem höher zu sein. Die Auswertung der biologischen Parameter steht noch aus.

A manutenção dos resíduos vegetais sobre o solo, o tipo de resíduo e sua velocidade de decomposição são de grande importância no estudo da ciclagem de nutrientes. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. This involves an assessment of the current situation of the farm, based on which proposals for an organic 'target (endpoint)' can be developed. The long-term effects of biogas production in organic farming on soil fertility due to changes in crop rotations and the removal of carbon from these systems are, at present, unclear. Data from a long-term field trial in Bavaria, Germany were used to evaluate the effects of different crop rotations and fertilization with biogas digestate on maize yields and humus balances. Digestate fertilization led to higher maize yields compared with an unfertilized control. Maize yields were lower when the maize was sown directly into a white clover cover crop. Humus balances show the importance of considering both the return of organic matter via fertilization and crop rotation design to ensure that soil fertility is not depleted

Mikronährstoffe haben wesentliche Funktionen im pflanzlichen Stoffwechsel und sind vor allem für die Toleranz gegenüber abiotischen und biotischen Stressfaktoren von Bedeutung. Als Hinweis auf die Mikronährstoffversorgung im ökologischen Landbau wurden Boden- und Pflanzenproben des Langzeit-Düngungsversuches Darmstadt untersucht (Beginn: 1980; Sand-Braunerde, 9,5°C und 590 mm Jahresdurchschnitt, Varianten: Rottemistdüngung mit und ohne Anwendung der biol.-dyn. Assessment of Alternative Phosphorus Fertilizers for Organic Farming: Chars, Ashes and Slags Organic Eprints

The application of sewage sludge to agricultural land, a common practice to recycle nutrients in the past, is currently prohibited in organic farming due to the risk of soil contamination from pollutants (e.g. toxic and potentially toxic elements, persistent organic pollutants, etc.). Incineration or disposal to landfill of dewatered sludge is costly, leads to greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminates the possibility of nutrient recovery, especially phosphorus. Effect of organic treatments on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics in vineyard Organic Eprints

The work aims to investigate the effects of different soil management strategies on carbon sequestration and total nitrogen in areas of vineyards suffering from loss of soil functionality. Treatments, selected for inter-row management, to re-install soil functionality were based on compost or other organic amendments (COMP), green manure (GM), and dry mulching (DM) strategies using winter legumes and cereals. Cover crops were seeded in fall and mown in late spring, leaved in the ground for mulching in DM or incorporated into the uppermost soil layers in GM. Total N difference method and 15N isotope dilution methode - A comparative study on N-fixation Organic Eprints

In the study, the 15N fixation of a number of green manure crops were studied using either the 15N dilution technique, or the simple total N difference method. The results of the two methods were not very different, and the total N difference method seemed to give as good results as the more complicated and expencive 15N dillution method.

Nutrient Budgeting: Organic Considerations for Implementing NRCS CPS 590 Organic Eprints

This webinar is focused on nutrient management on organic systems. It is addressed to US farmers, especially in the part dedicated to regulations. Agronomic information presented by the relator will be useful also for European organic farmers, both experts and newcomers. It is organised in sections: US regulations; evaluation of crops nutrient requirements; evaluation of nutrients release from organic matter, amendments and cover crops; fertilization, timing and application methods; leaching and runoff risk. Data values are presented in US units of measure: pounds per acre. The conversion factor to kg per ha is nearly 1 (1.12), so quite straightforward.

Abschätzung des Risikos einer Schwermetall-Akkumulation in Böden durch längerfristige Anwendung von Recycling- Phosphor-Düngemitteln Organic Eprints

In order to assess the risk of the use of recycled phosphorus (P) fertilisers for organic farming, the potential accumulation of heavy metals in soil after a 200-year fertilizer application equivalent to 11 kg P ha-1 yr-1 was calculated in a mass balance approach. Both fertilizers currently allowed in organic farming and recycled P fertilizers were regarded. For heavy metals, four scenarios with two soil pH levels (pH 5 and pH 7) and two precipitation excess levels (F 0.1 and F 0.3 m yr-1) were calculated. Recycled P fertilizers like struvite, meat- and bone meal, ashes, sewage sludge and digestate, as well as phosphate rock and triple superphosphate had a higher P content and a lower heavy metal-to-P ratio than composts. Stabilisierung von C aus Stroh und Gründüngung im Boden -Ergebnisse eines Inkubationsversuches Organic Eprints

Stroh und Gründüngung stellen im Marktfruchtanbau die wesentlichen Substrate für die Versorgung der Böden mit organischer Substanz dar. Weitere organische Dünger sind zumeist nicht oder nur in geringem Umfang vorhanden. Diese Situation erfordert eine differenzierte Bewertung der Humusreproduktionsleistung von Stroh und Gründüngung. Im Rahmen des BÖLN-Projektes „Sicherung der Humusvorräte mit Grün- und Strohdüngung“ (2811NA061) wird u.a. geprüft, inwiefern die kombinierte Betrachtung der C- und N-Massenbilanzen eine anwendbare Option hierfür darstellt. On-Farm nutrient balance assessment to improve nutrient management on organic dairy farms Organic Eprints

A survey is presented on the impact of different intensities of grassland management related to nutrient balances and their assessment. With special reference to data from Austria and Germany, it is postulated that on-farm nutrient balance assessment is a valuable tool for identifying deficits in efficiency of nutrient use in the soil-plant-animal system. Farm gate balances can be used as indicators for Codes of Good Agricultural Practice in Europe, if input/output parameters and calculations are standardised and if acceptable surpluses are regionally validated.

Soil quality grouping variables in OSCAR-MEE Organic Eprints

Soil chemical properties were correlated with microbial biomass and its activity. Different correlations were found at the beginning of the first and second cycles, respectively. Soil samples were grouped with respect to the different climate zones. The main variables that separated the countries were organic Carbon, total Nitrogen, pH and clay content.

Understanding soil nitrogen supply: organic matter quality and quantity Organic Eprints

The soil organic matter (SOM) contents of organic and conventionally farmed soils were compared. Whilst the quantity of SOM was found to be similar with both systems, the quality of SOM differed in respect of higher amounts of N released by the organic soils under anaerobic incubation. This indicated a greater potential rate of mineralization and suggested that the inherent fertility of the organic soils had been improved

Soil nutrient status and okra pod yield as influenced by plant density and cattle dung manure application Organic Eprints

A field was carried out on an ultisol in humid area of Edo State, Nigeria to evaluate the effects of plant density and cattle dung manure application on soil nutrient status and okra pod yield. Treatments consisted of three levels of cow dung (0, 300 and 450 kg N ha-1) and three plant densities (47,619, 66,666 and 83,333 plants per hectare (pph)). A 3 x 3 factorial arrangement fitted into randomized complete block design and replicated three times. Data were collected on soil chemical properties and pod yield of okra.
