Suspended sediments in a macrotidal estuary: comparison and use of different sensors ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Gentien, Patrick.
Measurements made using an in situ particle-sizer (PSA) were compared to those of an optical backscatter sensor (OBS) in a macrotidal estuary. Both estimate the total volume of particles. After comparison with dry weight of suspended matter sampled in the study area, the different measurements were converted into dry weight. In three different kinetic energy regimes, times series were coherent for most of the observations. Discrepancies of suspended sediment concentrations estimated by both sensors appeared under specific hydrodynamic conditions: they were related to occurrences of definite particle populations. Overestimations and underestimations of measurements by the instruments depend on the optical principles of the sensors (backscatter and...

Alimentation expérimentale de l'huître Crassostrea gigas à l'aide de navicules bleus Haslea ostrearia (Simonsen) de différentes tailles ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Robert, Jean-michel.
The influence on the feeding physiology (clearance, filtration, ingestion, absorption) of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas of low concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM ranging from 2 to 20 mg.l-l) and high food quality (mean organic fraction =54 %) was studied in the laboratory. Experimental diets were made up with three strains of the "blue diatom" Haslea ostrearia, which is responsible of the greening of oyster-ponds. The strains were characterized by different sizes (48, 65 and 98 µm respectively) but possessed the same density and biochemical composition. Clearance rate was found constant at 2.2 1.h(-l).g-l dry weight and therefore was not influenced by increasing seston load. Pseudofaeces production was observed for SPM...

Influence of suspended mussel lines on sediment erosion and resuspension in Lagune de la Grande Entrée, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Québec, Canada ArchiMer
Walker, Tony R.; Grant, Jon; Weise, Andrea M.; Mckindsey, Christopher W.; Callier, Myriam D.; Richard, Marion.
Downward fluxes of organically rich biodeposits under suspended mussel lines can cause benthic impacts such as changes in benthic community structure or microbial mat production. Quantifying sediment erosion in these coastal ecosystems is important for understanding how fluxes of organic matter and mussel biodeposits contribute to benthic–pelagic coupling. Critical shear velocity (u*crit), erosion rates and particle size distributions of resuspended sediment were measured at four stations distributed along a transect perpendicular to a mussel farm in Lagune de la Grande Entrée, Îles-de-la-Madeleine (Quebec, Canada). Stations were selected underneath the outer-most mussel line (0 m) and at distances of 15, 30 m and at a reference station (500 m) further...

Methane Hydrate Formation and Dissociation in Sand Media: Effect of Water Saturation, Gas Flowrate and Particle Size ArchiMer
Benmesbah, Fatima; Ruffine, Livio; Clain, Pascal; Osswald, Véronique; Fandino Torres, Olivia; Fournaison, Laurence; Delahaye, Anthony.
Assessing the influence of key parameters governing the formation of hydrates and determining the capacity of the latter to store gaseous molecules is needed to improve our understanding of the role of natural gas hydrates in the oceanic methane cycle. Such knowledge will also support the development of new industrial processes and technologies such as those related to thermal energy storage. In this study, high-pressure laboratory methane hydrate formation and dissociation experiments were carried out in a sandy matrix at a temperature around 276.65 K. Methane was continuously injected at constant flowrate to allow hydrate formation over the course of the injection step. The influence of water saturation, methane injection flowrate and particle size on...

Surface enhanced Raman scattering optimization of gold nanocylinder arrays: Influence of the localized surface plasmon resonance and excitation wavelength ArchiMer
Guillot, N.; Shen, H.; Fremaux, B.; Peron, Olivier; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Toury, T.; De La Chapelle, M. Lamy.
We here emphasize that the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensity has to be optimized by choosing the appropriate gold nanoparticles size for two excitation wavelengths; 632.8 and 785 nm. We discuss the role of the position and of the order of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in such optimization for both wavelengths. At 632.8 nm, the best SERS intensity is reached for a LSPR located between the excitation and Raman wavelengths whereas at 785 nm, the LSPR should be placed outside this range. The third order of LSPR is shown to have no influence on the SERS intensity. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3462068]

Natural invertebrate hosts of iridoviruses (Iridoviridae) Neotropical Entomology
Williams,Trevor.
Invertebrate iridescent viruses (IIVs) are icosahedral DNA viruses that infect invertebrates, mainly insects and terrestrial isopods, in damp and aquatic habitats. Exhaustive searches of databases resulted in the identification of 79 articles reporting 108 invertebrate species naturally infected by confirmed or putative iridoviruses. Of these, 103 (95%) were arthropods and the remainder were molluscs, an annelid worm and a nematode. Nine species were from marine habitats. Of the 99 non-marine species, 49 were from terrestrial habitats and 50 were aquatic, especially the aquatic stages of Diptera (44 species). The abundance of records from species of Aedes,Ochlerotatus and Psorophora contrasts markedly with a paucity of records from species of...

Interpretation of particle spectra of electronic counters by microscopical methods OMA
Bakker, C.; Prins, T.C.; Tackx, M.L.M..
1. Using monocultures or single species dominated natural phytoplankton, cell counts and volume estimations obtained by visual and electronic methods show reasonable agreement.Calibration seems possible (Figs.1-2).2. Further examples given (Fig. 3-4) show that microscopical identification of the volume peaks in electronic counter spectra of natural seston is not quite simple. Phytoplankton peaks may not be detected in the Counter spectrum. Shifts of Counter peaks to the left side of the visual spectrum may be found when cylindrical, elongated or needle- like phytoplankton dominate the sample.3. Both visual and electronic methods include potentially large errors. Possibly particle volume is either overestimated by the microscope and / or underestimated by...

Determination of methanesulfonic acid and non-sea-salt sulfate in single marine aerosol particles OMA
Kolaitis, L.N.; Bruynseels, F.; Van Grieken, R.; Andreae, M.O..
In open ocean waters the predominant volatile sulfur compound is dimethyl sulfide (DMS), representing almost 90% of the marine sulfur emissions. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA), one of the oxidation products of DMS, is consequently an important constituent of marine aerosols. Laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA) has been used for single-particle analysis of particles collected in the marine boundary layer. MSA, like the non-sea-salt sulfate, is mainly associated with the smallest aerosol particles, whose LAMMA spectra match the reference fingerprint spectra of MSA salts, sodium methanesulfonate and ammonium methanesulfonate. The presence of nitrate and heavy metal ions in the LAMMA spectra can reveal, to a certain extent, the degree of air pollution at the...

Effectiveness of fused magnesium potassium phosphate for marandu grass Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Orioli Júnior,Valdeci; Coutinho,Edson Luiz Mendes.
The current high price of KCl and great dependence on importation to satisfy the Brazilian demand indicate the need for studies that evaluate the efficiency of other K sources, particularly those based on domestic raw material. For this purpose, a greenhouse experiment was conducted with samples of a sandy clay loam Typic Haplustox, in a completely randomized 4 x 3 x 2 factorial design: four K rates (0, 60, 120, and 180 mg kg-1), three sources (potassium chloride (KCl), fused magnesium potassium phosphate (FMPP) and a mixture of 70 % FMPP + 30 % KCl) and two particle sizes (100 and 60 mesh), with three replications. Potassium fertilization resulted in significant increases in shoot dry matter production and in K concentrations, both in soil and plants. The...

Sediment Morphology, Distribution, and Recent Transport Dynamics in a Reforested Fragment Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bovi,Renata Cristina; Silva,Laura Fernanda Simões da; Zenero,Mariana Delgado Oliveira; Carvalho,Camila Carolina de; Cooper,Miguel.
Abstract Erosion generates large amounts of sediment, which may be deposited at the site of origin, on the slope of a hill, or along waterways. The transportability of each type of sediment by runoff and its potential for subsequent deposition largely depends on its morphological features and particle size distribution. The aim of this study is to describe and characterize the morphology and micromorphology of sediments deposited in a reforested area and to understand the dynamics of the transport process. In order to understand the sedimentation processes, the following analyses were performed: particle size distribution, with and without the use of a dispersant solution; statistical analysis of the sand fraction using Folk and Ward parameters; sediment...

Water retention and availability in soils of the State of Santa Catarina-Brazil: effect of textural classes, soil classes and lithology Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Costa,André da; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano; Costa,Adriano da; Pértile,Patricia; Silva,Franciani Rodrigues da.
The retention and availability of water in the soil vary according to the soil characteristics and determine plant growth. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate water retention and availability in the soils of the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, according to the textural class, soil class and lithology. The surface and subsurface horizons of 44 profiles were sampled in different regions of the State and different cover crops to determine field capacity, permanent wilting point, available water content, particle size, and organic matter content. Water retention and availability between the horizons were compared in a mixed model, considering the textural classes, the soil classes and lithology as fixed factors and profiles as random factors. It may...
