Cabioch, L; Retiere, C.
The waters of the Seine River are polluted by urban, industrial and agricultural effluents. In addition direct industrial wastes inputs are emptied into the estuary. Within the limits of the Seine Bay program it was not possible to research pollution impacts on every estuarine ecosystem link; so only benthos have been studied. To take time response of organisms into account, the authors have defined indicators or quantitative evaluation of parameters, reflecting physiological state. They have studied population fluctuations caused by natural or man induced effects.

Duval, P.
This study has two objectives: (1) the knowledge of spatial and temporal characteristics of flat fish nursery grounds, and, (2) the determination of natural or man-induced factors affecting these nurseries: hydrodynamics, sediment properties, predation, competition, water quality, pollution. To protect these grounds the author proposes a fisheries management plan and an impact study before all port installations or all coastal equipment use.

Minet, Jacques; Sauvager, F; Cormier, M.
Illnesses due to marine bivalvia consumption are mostly associated with viruses as causative agents. In more than the half of cases, this agent remains unidentifies, nevertheless. So far as bacteria are concerned, Salmonella are found firstly. Campylobacters represent a major cause of gastrointestinal disease, with Salmonella, among humans. Whether campylobacteriosis may be acquired from shellfishes remains unclear. We undertook to comparatively appreciate the survival of Campylobacter jejuni/coli and Salmonella typhimurium in seawater and contaminated mussels. Bacterial enumerations where performes using microbial cultures and specific (with immunofluorescence) direct viable counts (of substrate responsive bacteria). During laboratory contamination...

ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Maggi, Pierre; Le Baut, Claire; Bardouil, Michèle; Bocquene, Gilles; Le Dean, Loïc; Truquet, Philippe.
In order to estimate the effects of chlorine used in cooling systems of electric power plants on zooplankton, some experiments have been realized with the four first larval stages of the prawn (P. serratus Pennant). Chlorine injection was performed by constant adding at 16 and 20 degree C with times exposures of 5, 15 and 25 minutes. If there is no detectable variations in sensitivity of different stages, toxic effects of oxydants issued from chlorination can be observed (for both the two acclimatation temperatures) at 15 minutes exposure with a LD 50 : 32 mg/l of chlorine.

Effect of xanthan on the growth of sulphate-reduction bacteria in marine sediments. ArchiMer
Battersby, N; Stewart, D; Sharma, A.
Chemical additives are used extensively in the offshore oil industry. For secondary oil recovery, the biopolymer xanthan has been recommended as a viscosifying agent but its use may provoke microbial problems. The effect of adding xanthan to marine sediments on the growth and metabolic activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied. In all instances, its addition resulted in an increasing in SRB numbers of up to 250-fold. This was accompanied by a marked increase in the electron transport activity of the sediments when these were incubated under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The products formed as a result of the biodegradation of the polymer by indigenous heterotrophic bacteria in these sediments appear to have acted as suitable...

Many maritime countries in Europe have implemented marine environmental monitoring programmes which include the measurement of chemical contaminants and related biological effects. How best to integrate data obtained in these two types of monitoring into meaningful assessments has been the subject of recent efforts by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Expert Groups. Work within these groups has concentrated on defining a core set of chemical and biological endpoints that can be used across maritime areas, defining confounding factors, supporting parameters and protocols for measurement. The framework comprised markers for concentrations of, exposure to and effects from, contaminants. Most importantly, assessment criteria for...

Vacelet, E.
The influence of spillage of phosphates on the bacterial population and its activity was found to be not significant (on total number) or significant but low (on the number of growing cells which was higher close to the loading area). Phosphate discharge resulted also in a significant increase of dividing cells and of enzymatic activity but its effects could be hardly separated from sewage effects. Neither solubilizing strains nor bacterial solubilization could be detected.

Alzieu, Claude; Thibaud, Yves; Heral, Maurice; Boutier, Bernard.
The boats cruising in the oyster growing areas are protected against biofouling by paints which release toxic compounds such as copper oxide and organotins into the water. After an estimation of the inputs of copper and organotins in the "Marennes-Oleron", Arcachon (Atlantic) and Thau (Mediterranean Sea) areas, their influence on larval fixation is discussed, taking into account the tributyltin toxicity against D larvae of Crassostrea gigas. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated that tributyltin produces morphological abnormalities of the shell and increases tin levels in tissues, interfering with copper and zinc metabolism. The influence of yacht ports on oyster growth and shell morphology, has been demonstrated in the field. The use of...

ArchiMer
His, Edouard; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Rene.
The spat production in the Bay of Arcachon has been recently disturbed. Bioassays using algae used as food for oyster larvae have shown that the organotin paints affect or inhibit growth of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans . Fresh waters coming into the bay and shore sediment did not affect the growth of these algae. Bioassays proposed by Woelke (1967) using embryos and larvae of Crassostrea gigas have shown that the quality of the sea water from Arcachon harbour has been improved a few months after the use of organotin paints has been prohibited. Likewise fresh waters are free from any micropollutants that could drastically disturb the reproduction of C. gigas in the bay.

ArchiMer
Alzieu, Claude; Heral, Maurice; Thibaud, Yves; Dardignac, Marie-jose; Feuillet, Michèle.
Experiments in oyster-breeding areas where oyster Crassostrea gigas suffers from anomalies of calcification, show an obvious correlation between the importance of the malformation of shells and the vicinity of port areas where a great number of boats usually stay. Organotin compounds contained in antifouling paints, and more precisely Tributyltin fluoride (TBTF) induce, in experimental environment, similar anomalies to those observed in natural environment. The amounts of total tin in the tissues of oysters living in the vicinity of spots where organotin products are brought in, can reach high values, though they appear to decrease rapidly whereas the environmental contamination lessens. The authors suggest that results of organotin upon the mechanisms of...

Cauchi, B.
Metabolic potentialities of bacterial communities in marine water after Crude Oil pollution (Arabian Light) and in marine water after pollution and treatment (enrichment: Inipol EAP 22) have been studied and compared. With data analysis: regressions, hierarchical ascending classification and multifactor correspondence analysis, the treatment gives rise to conservation and one increase of enzymatic pool (second day) of the bacterial sample as a combined metabolic homogeneity contrary to pollution impact. The direct assimilation of hydrocarbons looks more regular and slow without treatment.

Alcolado Prieto, P.; Caballero Aragón, H.; Alcolado, P. M.; Lopeztegui Castillo, A..
The effect of pollution on coral recruitment has been insufficiently studied. This research deals with coral recruitment in coastal areas and aimed to determine the variations of density and dominant species of corals recruits in sites at different distances from pollution sources. The composition and structure of stony coral (scleractinian and milleporids) recruit associations were characterized in the fringing reef of Western Havana, Cuba. This reef is influenced by urban pollution from the Almendares River and a sewage outlet located at its mouth. Four sites were sampled on the upper fore reef escarpment at 10m deep every three months between July 2007 and May 2008. A 25cm side quadrat was used to determine the density and taxonomic composition of...
