PROGRESSIVE EFFECTS OF DIABETES MELLITUS ON THE SKIN EPITHELIUM OF THE RA International Journal of Morphology
Benetti Tanga,Marcelo; Buttros,Kemli Raquel; Nakao,Cristiano; Chinali Komesu,Marilena.
Skin serves as interface between inner aand outer environment, and acts a a mechanical barrier. Changes in its characteristics may lead to a higher pathogenicity, less defense capacity, or both. Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous group of chronic hyperglycemic disorders, considered a syndrome rather than a simple disease. Complications by diabetes are mostly associated with the chronicity of the disease and very little information exists about its early pathological processes. Animal models are considered very useful for the study of early diabetes. Wistar rats with lloxan induccced diabetes were used in a way to study the progresive effects of diabetes mellitus on the skin epithelium. Five animals were sacrificed at 7 days (Phase I) and five others at...

Solamente...

Observations on the ultrastructure of the proboscis epithelia in Polycystis naegelii Kölliker (Turbellaria Eukalyptorhynchia) and some associated structures OMA
Schockaert, E.R.; Bedini, C..
The epithelium of the anterior tip of the bodywall, of the proboscis cavity and of the proboscis cone in Polycystis naegelii has been studied with the electron microscope. These epithelia are formed by six syncytial belts separated from each other by cellular limits: one belt belongs to the epidermis, three line the cavity and two cover the cone. The posterior belt of the cavity and those of the cone are of the insunk type bringing about a peculiar relationship between the latter two. Moreover, they are associated with muscular elements under the basal cone belt but above its basement membrane. Nine different kinds of glands have been observed erupting at the surface of the epithelia in the studied area, while six different sorts of...

Use of lytic bacteriophages to reduce Salmonella Enteritidis in experimentally contaminated chicken cuts Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Fiorentin,L; Vieira,ND; Barioni Júnior,W.
Reducing Salmonella contamination in poultry is of major importance to prevent the introduction of this microorganism into the food chain. Salmonellae may spread during storage time (shelf life) whenever pre-harvest control fails or post-harvest contamination occurs. Therefore, preventive measures should also be used in the post-harvest level of poultry production in order to control salmonellae. Chicken skin samples were experimentally contaminated by immersing whole legs (thighs and drumsticks) in a suspension containing 10(6) colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) of Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 4 (SE PT4) at the slaughter day. One day later, samples from one group were immersed in a suspension pool containing 10(9) CFU/mL of each of three...

The sexual dimorphic inguinal glands of the frog species Ololygon centralis (Anura: Hylidae) at light and transmission electron microscopy Rev. Bras. Zool.
Brito,Pedro; Targueta,Cíntia P.; Arruda,Walquíria; Santos,Fernanda; Bastos,Rogério.
ABSTRACT The anuran skin characteristically has different types of glands, most of which are microscopic and are spread throughout the skin. Some species have specialized regions where glands agglomerate, forming macroglands. The description of the external morphology of Ololygon centralis (Pombal & Bastos, 1996) revealed the presence of an inguinal gland. Ololygon centralis is the only species of the genus that has a macrogland. The present study found these inguinal macroglands to be present only on male specimens, thus characterizing it as a sexually dimorphic skin gland. Microscopic analysis revealed that these glands are composed of many syncytial units involved by myoepithelial cells. The center of the syncytium is full of a proteinaceous...

Use of organic honey for the topic treatment of a third-degree skin burn in a dog - Case Report MV&Z
Aristizabal, Andrés Sebastian; Hayashi, Ayne Murata; Matera, Julia Maria.
The use of honey provides considerable benefit in wound care as a stimulus for tissue growth, increased epithelialization, and reduced scar formation. These effects are due to its acidity, the presence of hydrogen peroxide, osmotic effect, and antioxidant content. A four-year-old canine Labrador showed an extensive wound around the left thoracoabdominal area as the result of a third-degree burn due to the use of an electrical thermal mattress. After debridement of the necrotic tissue and ten days of antibiotic therapy, the use of a topical dressing with organic honey was begun, twice a day, with pure honey applied with surgical gauze and protected with a dressing. The injury progressed with good healing, with epithelialization and formation of granulation...

Control of the skin scarring response Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ferreira,Lydia M.; Gragnani,Alfredo; Furtado,Fabianne; Hochman,Bernardo.
There comes a time when the understanding of the cutaneous healing process becomes essential due to the need for a precocious tissue repair to reduce the physical, social, and psychological morbidity. Advances in the knowledge on the control of interaction among cells, matrix and growth factors will provide more information on the Regenerative Medicine, an emerging area of research in medical bioengineering. However, considering the dynamism and complexity of the cutaneous healing response, it is fundamental to understand the control mechanism exerted by the interaction and synergism of both systems, cutaneous nervous and central nervous, via hypothalamus hypophysis-adrenal axis, a relevant subject, but hardly ever explored. The present study reviews the...

Metastatic well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in the prepuce of a dog: a report of clinicopathological, immunophenotypic and therapeutic approach Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Auler,P.A.; Gamba,C.O.; Horta,R.S.; Lavalle,G.E.; Cassali,G.D..
This report describes a case of a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the foreskin of a dog, with metastasis in the regional lymph node. A six-year-old male intact Pit Bull dog presented a preputial ulcerated lesion with an evolution time of one year and enlarged left inguinal lymph node. Surgical resection of the preputial lesion and inguinal lymph nodes was made. The diagnosis of a well differentiated SCC was made following histopathological analysis and immunohistochemistry technique was used to confirm lymph node metastasis and to determine the histological features of the tumor. Here we demonstrated that immunohistochemistry can be an important complementary diagnostic tool to assess the prognostic features of SCC and to determine the...

Dermatosparaxis in two White Doper lambs in Brazil: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,A.P.C.; Mol,J.P.S.; Carvalho Junior,C.A.; Paixão,T.A.; Santos,R.L..
Dermatosparaxis is a genetic disease that affects collagen maturation. This disease is characterized by marked impairment of the resistance of collagen fibers that leads to skin fragility, and it may affect several species. This is the first report of dermatosparaxis in sheep in Brazil. Clinically, two White Dorper lambs had multiple skin lacerations in the neck, dorsum and limbs. Transmission microscopy demonstrated irregular collagen fibers arranged in hieroglyphic shape and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated thin collagen fibrils that were not arranged in bundles as observed in the normal dermis. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of dermatosparaxis.

Antibacterial activity of lactose-binding lectins from Bufo arenarum skin Biocell
Sánchez Riera,Alicia; Daud,Adriana; Gallo,Adriana; Genta,Susana; Aybar,Manuel; Sánchez,Sara.
Amphibians respond to microbial infection through cellular and humoral defense mechanisms such as antimicrobial protein secretion. Most humoral defense proteins are synthetized in the skin. In this study we isolated two b-galactoside-binding lectins with molecular weights of 50 and 56 KDa from the skin of Bufo arenarum. These lectins have significant hemagglutination activity against trypsinized rabbit erythrocytes, which was inhibited by galactose-containing saccharides. They are water-soluble and independent of the presence of calcium. The antimicrobial analysis for each lectin was performed. At mmolar concentration lectins show strong bacteriostatic activity against Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli K12 4100 and wild strains of Escherichia coli...
