There are some medications and procedures that can be used to accelerate the healing of skin wounds. Some studies have demonstrated improvement of burn wound healing with honey treatment. In other hand, based on traditional medicine have improved wound healing with animal oil. This study was done to compare the efficacy of animal oil and honey in accelerating healing of full thickness wound of skin in mice. In this experimental study 36 male NMRI mice were subjected to full-thickness skin wounds under general anesthesia. Animals were randomly allocated to receive either single daily applications of placebo, animal oil and honey (n=12 for each group) respectively. On 4th, 7th and 10th days, four mice from each group were sacrificed using an overdose of... |

In the present paper were analysed the three-dimensional characteristics of the interface epithelium-connective tissue surface of finger prints of Cebus apella monkey employing the scanning electrón microscopic methods. The connective tissue core (CTC) and epithelial papillae were examined verifying the three-dimensional configuration of the tissue projections. The samples were fixed in Bouin solsution for histologic preparations and in modified Karnovsky for examine to observe in scanning electrón microscopy. After treatment in the 10% NaOH solution during 3 to 5 day s, the surface of finger prints revealed a distribution of CTC of lamina propria in situ showing original three-dimensional SEM images. The linear and circular dispositions CTC, and the... |

The epithelium of the anterior tip of the bodywall, of the proboscis cavity and of the proboscis cone in Polycystis naegelii has been studied with the electron microscope. These epithelia are formed by six syncytial belts separated from each other by cellular limits: one belt belongs to the epidermis, three line the cavity and two cover the cone. The posterior belt of the cavity and those of the cone are of the insunk type bringing about a peculiar relationship between the latter two. Moreover, they are associated with muscular elements under the basal cone belt but above its basement membrane. Nine different kinds of glands have been observed erupting at the surface of the epithelia in the studied area, while six different sorts of... |

Reducing Salmonella contamination in poultry is of major importance to prevent the introduction of this microorganism into the food chain. Salmonellae may spread during storage time (shelf life) whenever pre-harvest control fails or post-harvest contamination occurs. Therefore, preventive measures should also be used in the post-harvest level of poultry production in order to control salmonellae. Chicken skin samples were experimentally contaminated by immersing whole legs (thighs and drumsticks) in a suspension containing 10(6) colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) of Salmonella Enteritidis phage type 4 (SE PT4) at the slaughter day. One day later, samples from one group were immersed in a suspension pool containing 10(9) CFU/mL of each of three... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of crossings between sheep breeds on the intrinsic quality of leather. It was used the skins of 36 lambs (18 females and 18 males), resulting from crosses between ewes of a native breed from the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul and rams of the same native breed as well as the Texel and Santa Inês genetic groups. The animals were raised in confinement until slaughter weight, from 28 to 32 kg. After slaughter, samples were taken from the skins for histological analysis. The skins were tanned with chromium, retanned and greased. It was taken from the leather samples for electromicrographs and for tests for tensile and tear strength (intrinsic quality). Morphological aspects from the skin as well... |

Over the course of 17 months, non-aspiration fine needle (21-27G) cytology was performed on 213 dogs with 300 skin and soft tissue tumors. The smears were air dried and stained by the Rosenfeld method. There were 119 males (56%) and 94 females (44%), the majority of at least 6 years of age (75%). Mongrel dogs were over-represented (n=74), followed by Boxer (n=21), Poodle (n=18), German Shepard (n=15), Cocker Spaniel (n=12), and Doberman Pinscher (n= 11). In 40% of the cases (85 dogs, 117Iesions), histological evaluation was available to compare with the cytologic results. In this group, 77 specimens were benign (22 non-neoplastic and 55 neoplastic) and 40 malignant. Tumors were represented by 19%non-neoplastic lesions, 36% epithelial tumors, 30%... |

The use of honey provides considerable benefit in wound care as a stimulus for tissue growth, increased epithelialization, and reduced scar formation. These effects are due to its acidity, the presence of hydrogen peroxide, osmotic effect, and antioxidant content. A four-year-old canine Labrador showed an extensive wound around the left thoracoabdominal area as the result of a third-degree burn due to the use of an electrical thermal mattress. After debridement of the necrotic tissue and ten days of antibiotic therapy, the use of a topical dressing with organic honey was begun, twice a day, with pure honey applied with surgical gauze and protected with a dressing. The injury progressed with good healing, with epithelialization and formation of granulation... |

There comes a time when the understanding of the cutaneous healing process becomes essential due to the need for a precocious tissue repair to reduce the physical, social, and psychological morbidity. Advances in the knowledge on the control of interaction among cells, matrix and growth factors will provide more information on the Regenerative Medicine, an emerging area of research in medical bioengineering. However, considering the dynamism and complexity of the cutaneous healing response, it is fundamental to understand the control mechanism exerted by the interaction and synergism of both systems, cutaneous nervous and central nervous, via hypothalamus hypophysis-adrenal axis, a relevant subject, but hardly ever explored. The present study reviews the... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to macroscopically and microscopically evaluate the healing of skin wounds induced in rats by topical application of cassava polyamide biopolymer hydrogel. In total, 32 rats were used and divided into four groups (n= 8): negative control - saline solution; positive control - use of commercial ointment; experimental group - I - ointment + cassava hydrogel; experimental group - II - cassava hydrogel. A 1cm2 wound induced on the animals dorsum was treated and evaluated. At day 21 post-operation, the animals were sacrificed by anesthetic overdose, and then 1cm2 of cicatricial skin from the wound region was collected. The material was cut to evaluate healing. In the macroscopic evaluation, complete healing was observed at the end of 21... |
