In the planned Soviet economy, agricultural enterprises in Ukraine played a significant role in maintaining social infrastructure in rural areas. The state insisted that these enterprises provide medical care, transport infrastructure, kindergartens, schools and housing, as well as food supplies. Over the course of transition, the economic and political conditions of agricultural enterprises has drastically changed. The state greatly reduced financing for rural social infrastructure. Additionally, agricultural production significantly fell. As a result, the agricultural enterprises partially cut their support of social infrastructure in the rural areas, and in some cases, even completely depleted it. At the same time, the living conditions of the rural... |

Fire protection attempts to reduce the costs of fear, injury, death, uninsured property loss, and high fire insurance payments. Municipalities in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the community have generally placed a high priority on providing fire protection with public revenues as one of the services to the residents. Local municipal officials face decisions on the allocation of financial resources. An expenditure for fire protection is a foregone opportunity for expenditure on parks for example. As growth occurs in a given area, local official must decide whether additional fire protection is needed, and if so, how should the protection be afforded? Should the local government unit start up their own department, purchase additional... |

Taking Zhongxiang City, Hubei Province, China as an example, evaluation index system of urban land intensive use is established from four aspects of land economic benefit, land utilization degree, investment intensity, and sustainable utilization. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to determine the weight of evaluation index in research region. Taking the index numerical value of Hubei Province as the standard value, index value of the research region is evaluated. Combining with the index weight obtained by AHP, urban land intensive use is evaluated by the weighted average. Result shows that land intensive use level of Zhongxiang City is much lower than the average level of Hubei Province. Therefore, urban land of Zhongxiang City is of is great... |

Horticulture provides many developing countries with opportunities for export diversification, poverty alleviation and rural development. However, stringent public and private-sector food-safety standards, for example EurepGap, pose a challenge especially to small export farmers. Compliance with these standards entails costly investments that may be a burden to smallholder farmers, failure to which might lead to their exclusion in the global market. A number of questions which require empirical research arise to confirm or refute these concerns. The study assesses awareness of the EurepGap standards among smallholder farmers and analyzes the critical factors influencing their compliance. It also identifies the costs of complying with these standards and... |

PROAGRO is the leading firm in the broiler business in Venezuela. It is integrated through hatchery, grow-out, processing and distribution activities. As a consequence of strict price regulation policies enforced by the government in the poultry products, PROAGRO experienced serious injury to its profitability over the last few years. The most severe regulations were applied to PROAGRO's chief product (whole, ready-to-cook broiler with feet and giblets incorporated in the body cavity); therefore, PROAGRO's management has concentrated research efforts to find alternative ways to increase sales of products with larger margins through the most profitable distribution channels. At the present time the distribution channel with the biggest margin for... |

The main objective of this paper is to develop a general framework for rural development in which marketing will play a major role. This framework could make the "learning by doing" process more efficient and effective. Specific goals of this paper are to provide the reader with: (1) a better overall understanding of the rural development and marketing development process, (2) an analysis of approaches used by rural development projects in their effort to improve rural marketing, and (3) a systematic approach to rural marketing development. The focus will be on the semi-subsistence and subsistence farmers, who provide a major share of total production and marketed surplus in most developing countries. The importance of the development of the... |

According to the data of population density, most of Hungary’s territory has rural features. Achieving EU supports in order to focus on developing the most underdeveloped communities, and in order to lessen the differences between communities, to establish priorities and to determine the rank of rural communities based on their development potential is necessary. The need of measurability arises because of comparison and classification. A possible target area is an analysis of population retaining ability and the ability to economically provide for a population of rural areas. |

Forecasting has been very important in decision making at all levels and sectors of the economy. In agriculture, where the decision environment is characterized by risks and uncertainty largely due to uncertain yields and relatively low price elasticities of demand of most commodities, decision makers require some information about the future and the likelihood of the possible future outcomes. Forecast information serves many users. Farmer's production and marketing decisions, for instance, are often based on some perspective of the likely pattern of price movements over the coming year. Likewise, production prospects for the season are used by market intermediaries in coordinating their resources. Outlook information about production and consumption... |

The history of starvation in the world is very tightly linked with the history of humanity. The problem of starvation was discussed in 1945 at the Worldwide Constitutional Conference of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The main goal of the organization was and remains a food policy for the benefit of all, in order to liberate all people from starvation. Since 1950, there has been a notable decrease in agricultural production per capita in the developing counties in comparison to the needs. In 1972 and 1973, poor harvests created a dramatic situation in many regions of the world and once again it was in the developing countries where people suffered the most. In the Sahel countries, many thousand of lives would have been lost... |

This paper aims at deepening and understanding of the agricultural marketing characteristics of farmers in the Eastern region of Upper Volta, West Africa. This work was requested by the Eastern Regional Development Organization (ORD) of the Voltaic government and the local U.S. AID Mission to provide some early guidepoints in the preparation of proposals for a major multi-donor integrated rural development project. The paper analyzes, at the farmer's level, utilization of crops, sales of purchases of crops and animals, other marketing transactions of farmers (trading in crops, processing of crops, gathering of fruit and nuts), and farmer's level of participation in the marketing system. |
