Local Responses to Marine Conservation in Zanzibar, Tanzania OceanDocs
Levine, A..
While terrestrial parks and reserves have existed in Tanzania since colonial times, marine protected areas are a much newer endeavor in natural resource conservation. As the importance of marine conservation came to the international forefront in the 1990s, Tanzania experienced a rapid establishment and expansion of marine parks and protected areas. These efforts were indeed crucial to protecting the country’s marine resource base, but they also had significant implications for the lives and fishing patterns of local artisanal fishermen. Terrestrial protected areas in Tanzania have historically been riddled with conflict and local contestation, bringing about numerous debates on the best ways to involve rural residents in conservation planning efforts to...

Villanueva Sanhueza, F.A..

Codignotto, J..
In Argentine coastal areas, geomorphological changes are directly related to relative continental uplifts and falls and to seaward and landward displacement of the coastline. Accretional and erosional phenomena are produced by displacement of the coastline in horizontal way. The resultant structures can be represented in two principal sectors. Backward motion or retrogradation of about 15 km were estimated for the Strait of Magellan, over an area of 500 km 2.Otherwise, large accretional phenomena were recognized in the north, with a 60 km seaward displacement, equivalent to 4,000 km2 in the last7.000 years. Variation in tidal regime and amplitude is reflected in the coincidence of the boundary between accretion and erosional sectors. Two principal nearshore...

The objective of this study was to evaluate five half-moist diets with graded levels of chemical fish silage (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 %) prepared with 2 % sulfuric acid 98 % (weigth/volumen), as a unique animal protein source. They were compared with a commercial food (20 % of fish meal), Clarias gariepinus feeding during 60 days. The experimental design was completely randomized and the statistical analysis of the results was done through analysis of variance and the results were compared through the Duncan test at 5 %. The results showed that indicators such as: growth, feed utilization and survival rate did not differ significantly (p > 0,05) between experiment diets, representing between $188,00 and 302, 00 USD/t...

Management of shark fisheries in Seychelles OceanDocs
Nageon de Lestang, J..
Shark species, both oceanic and coastal, are very common to Seychelle waters. In the past, however, the demand for shark and shark products has always been very erratic. The ever-increasing international concern for the species and potential conflicts between fishermen and conservation groups has highlighted the issue. In the Seychelles, the shark are caught by gillnets in inshore waters and by hook-and-line and purse seine offshore. Until very recently there were no regulations controlling the shark fishery, but, partly in response to initiatives by a local conservation group, fishing for sharks with nets has been banned since 1 August 1998. A review is provided of the present situation of the fishery whilst underscoring the difficulties of formulating a...

Núñez, R.; Ortiz, E.; Fonseca, E.L.; Barban, O.; Almazán, V.; Pizarro, R.; Okuda, I..
The Bay of Havana is one of more polluted ecosystems in our country, because the hydrocarbons concentration in the water and sediment is very high. The bioremediation is a good technique for the elimination of the contaminant. In the Center of Marine Bioproduct we have developed some different bioproduct based on hydrocarbons degrading marine bacteria for the eliminatation the hydrocarbons in sea water. The bioproduct called BIOIL-FC has been used with excellent results in the mitigation of different oil spill in cuban ecosystems. In this work were compared the effectiveness of biodegradation between bioaugmentation with BIOIL-FC and isolated microorganisms from sediment of the bay and the biostimulation with inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus. In this...

The bivalve Corbicula fluminea Müller is recorded for the first time in Colombia, in the National Park Isla de Salamanca. This protected area includes freshwater channels and mixohaline lagoons influenced by waters of both the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea. This exotic bivalve occurs locally in freshwater channels close to the Magdalena River as well as in the latter, whereas another corbiculid native species, Polymesoda solida, is commonly found in the mixohaline lagoons. Densities of C. fluminea ranged from 10 to 100 ind/m2 along with low numbers of P. solida. Lengths ranged form 10 to 43 mm in a predominant muddy substrate. Local fishermen have stated that C. fluminea was established approximately in 1992; this clam is being artisanally...

Aquaculture Training for Kenyan Fisheries Officers and University Students OceanDocs
Lack of technical training has been cited as a major reason for the low output of fish ponds in Kenya. The lack was observed at all levels, from the lowest level extension agent through university levels. The training program undertaken by the Africa Project in Kenya seeks to improve training and to provide a cadre of trainers who have extensive practical fish production experience. This year the Africa Project has begun scholarship support for two MS students, one at Moi University’s Chepkoilel Campus, Eldoret, Kenya, and the other at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama. Small stipends for student research conducted at Sagana Fish Farm have allowed undergraduate as well as graduate-level university students to remain longer to complete projects and gain...

Relatório do levantamento hidrográfico do Porto de Quelimane. OceanDocs

Garciarena, A.D.; Buratti, C.C..
The fishing activity on Argentine anchovy Northern stock (34º S-41º S) during the 1993-2011 period was studied (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data derived from the commercial fleet catch records. Annual landings reached a minimum of 5,900 t in 1999 and a maximum of 36,300 t in 2004. The largest catches, performed by the offshore ice chilling fleet, averaged 11,800 t. As of 2003 it was observed an increase in the coastal ships share and a decrease in that of the inshore fleet that in 2004-2011 represented less than 3% of total landings. The major activity, developed between 37º S-41º S in the August-November period, had Mar del Plata as the main port of landing. The average catch per trip and the mean HP of ships, that as of 1999 increased in...
