Size spectra, body width and morphotypes of intertidal nematodes: an ecological interpretation OMA
Tita, G.; Vincx, M.; Desrosiers, G..
Nematode species from three intertidal assemblages (St Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, Canada) were studied in order to form an ecological interpretation of three allometric attributes: body width, size spectra, and morphotypes. The three assemblages were characterized by a very similar sediment grain median (Md) but different silt-clay proportions: A1 (upper-tidal level; Md=122 µm; silt=34.8%), A3 (mid-tidal level; Md=182 µm; silt=12.8%), and A5 (lower-tidal level; Md=122 µm; silt=6.8%). Silt-clay proportions were an influential factor in determining the mean nematode body width, used as a morphological discriminant between burrowing and interstitial organisms. A plot of the number of species vs the body width-classes showed two peaks: between 19.3 and 22.6 µm...

The hyperbenthos OMA
Mees, J.; Jones, M.B..
The hyperbenthos is a term applied to the association of small animals living in the water layer close to the sea bed. The species composition of the hyperbenthos is distinctly different from that of other benthic and planktonic groupings, and includes endemic species, planktonic species derived from their downward extensions (often with seasonal periodicity) and endo- or epibenthic species as they emerge into the water column (usually in diel cycles). In nearly all marine ecosystems investigated to date, there is a general increase in the biomass at the benthic boundary layer (hyperbenthon) relative to the water column immediately above it, yet the zone and its fauna remain relatively poorly studied. Sampling these often highly mobile animals is not easy...

Steltloper populaties en macrozoobenthos in een veranderend estuarium: de Oosterschelde (Nl.) = Wader populations and macrozoobenthos in a changing estuary: the Oosterschelde (The Netherlands) OMA
Meire, P..

A seasonally varying biotope at Signy Island, Antarctic: implications for meiofaunal structure OMA
Vanhove, S.; Beghyn, M.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Bullough, L.W.; Vincx, M..
Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera...

TOWARDS A REVIEW OF THE DECAPOD CRUSTACEA FROM THE REMOTE OCEANIC ARCHIPELAGO OF TRINDADE AND MARTIN VAZ, SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN: NEW RECORDS AND NOTES ON ECOLOGY AND ZOOGEOGRAPHY Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
TAVARES,MARCOS; CARVALHO,LEINA; MENDONÇA JR.,JOEL BRAGA DE.
ABSTRACT The remoteness of the Trindade and Martin Vaz young volcanic archipelago (TMV) raises questions about the source of its marine benthic fauna and levels of endemism. Addressing these questions requires a comprehensive knowledge of the taxonomic composition of the marine fauna of the islands. A five-year survey in the shallow marine waters (up to 30 m) and a literature review on the data published for TMV have been conducted to document the biodiversity of the benthic fauna. Here we report on ten new records of decapod crustaceans from TMV: Gnathophyllum americanum and Thor amboinensis are circumtropical in distribution, whereas Stenopus hispidus, Gnathophylloides mineri and Parribacus antarcticus are disjunct circumtropical species as their...

Short-term stability of estuarine benthic assemblages: are storms pattern-defining events? Rev. Bras. Zool.
Negrello Filho,Orlei A.; Lana,Paulo C..
Storms, associated with strong winds and heavy rains, are often the most severe physical disturbances in shallow coastal areas causing instability to sedimentary environments. We hypothesized herein that if storms influence short-term assemblage structure of macrofauna, then assemblages should change after storms, while remaining relatively stable over calm weather conditions. The study was conducted at the subtropical Paranaguá Bay, in southern Brazil. We selected four 700 m² sites, at the estuarine outlet, to monitor changes in number of species, number of individuals and Shannon diversity. Sampling was arranged considering the weather forecast so that both before and after conditions could be recorded. Data of each site was tested separately to access...

Species composition and abundance of the benthic community of Axiidea and Gebiidea (Crustacea: Decapoda) in the Marapanim Bay, Amazon estuary, northern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Silva,Dalila Costa; Martinelli-Lemos,Jussara Moretto.
The thalassinideans (Axiidea and Gebiidea) encompasses approximately 615 species with reclusive habits, generally confined to extensive galleries burrowed into the sand or mud and, more rarely, in openings in reefs or the cavities of sessile animals such as sponges and coral. These species use the galleries for shelter, feeding and breeding, except during the pelagic larval stage. They inhabit estuaries, bays, lagoons, beaches, seas and both tropical and temperate oceanic areas throughout the world, distributed predominantly in the intertidal zone (mid-littoral and infralittoral zones). The aim of the present study was to assess the species composition and abundance of thalassinideans, comparing two micro-habitats (consolidated and non-consolidated...

Free-living benthic marine invertebrates in Chile RChHN
LEE,MATTHEW R; CASTILLA,JUAN CARLOS; FERNÁNDEZ,MIRIAM; CLARKE,MARCELA; GONZÁLEZ,CATHERINE; HERMOSILLA,CONSUELO; PRADO,LUIS; ROZBACZYLO,NICOLAS; VALDOVINOS,CLAUDIO.
A comprehensive literature review was conducted to determine the species richness of all the possible taxa of free-living benthic marine invertebrates in Chile. In addition, the extent of endemism to the Pacific Islands and deep-sea, the number of non-indigenous species, and the contribution that the Chilean benthic marine invertebrate fauna makes to the world benthic marine invertebrate fauna was examined. A total of 4,553 species were found. The most speciose taxa were the Crustacea, Mollusca and Polychaeta. Species richness data was not available for a number of taxa, despite evidence that these taxa are present in the Chilean benthos. The Chilean marine invertebrate benthic fauna constitutes 2.47 % of the world marine invertebrate benthic fauna. There...

Population dynamics and secondary production of Euzonus furciferus Ehlers (Polychaeta, Opheliidae) in an exposed sandy beach of Southern Brazil Zoologia
Souza,José R. B. de; Borzone,Carlos A..
The distribution, population dynamics and secondary production of the polychaete Euzonus furciferus was studied in Atami Beach (Southern Brazil), from February 1992 to March 1993. Euzonus furciferus Ehlers, 1897 is the only deposit feeder species of the upper intertidal region. The organisms were present in the sandy beach all over the year, concentrated in a narrow band, and reaching maximal densities of 3,029 individuals m-2. Peaks of abundance occurred in September 1992, with a mean of 681.8 individuals m-2. Recruitment occurred in winter, with a peak in July. Mean annual biomass was estimated in 0.218 gAFDW m-2, with a total annual production of 0.466 gAFDW m-2 y-1, giving a P/B ratio of 2.13 y-1. Similar values were found for a filter-feeder...

Sandy beaches: state of the art of nematode ecology Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARIA,TATIANA F.; VANAVERBEKE,JAN; VANREUSEL,ANN; ESTEVES,ANDRÉ M..
ABSTRACT In this review, we summarize existing knowledge of the ecology of sandy-beach nematodes, in relation to spatial distribution, food webs, pollution and climate change. We attempt to discuss spatial scale patterns (macro-, meso- and microscale) according to their degree of importance in structuring sandy-beach nematode assemblages. This review will provide a substantial background on current knowledge of sandy-beach nematodes, and can be used as a starting point to delineate further investigations in this field. Over decades, sandy beaches have been the scene of studies focusing on community and population ecology, both related to morphodynamic models. The combination of physical factors (e.g. grain size, tidal exposure) and biological interactions...

Relationship between space distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates community and trophic state in a Neotropical reservoir (Itupararanga, Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Beghelli,Frederico Guilherme de Souza; Santos,André Cordeiro Alves dos; Urso-Guimarães,Maria Virgínia; Calijuri,Maria do Carmo.
The purpose of this work was to verify the benthic macroinvertebrates community responses through environmental factors along a headwater tropical reservoir. Samplings were taken with a Van-Veen grab along the reservoir in littoral and profundal regions and in the headwater, next to the dam and the middle of the reservoir. Samples were taken during both wet and dry seasons. Dissolved oxygen concentrations, electric conductivity, temperature and pH near the sediment have been performed in situ, at every sampling station by using a multiprobe and Secchi disc. Total water phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations were analyzed to determine the trophic state index. Sediment's organic matter, total phosphorus, nitrogen concentrations and granulometric...

Comparative analysis of mollusks in the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve and coastal lagoons in southeastern Mexico Boletín de Investigaciones
González-Solis,Alicia; Torruco,Daniel; Torruco-González,Ángel D..
ABSTRACT The phylum Mollusca is widely distributed in all types of environments. The species it contains are important for their multiple uses as food (as part of several trophic chains), as vectors of other groups of organisms, for the extraction of substances, and as sentinels of natural and induced environmental changes. In this work, a comparative evaluation of the malacological biodiversity associated with different habitats in the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve in Campeche and in eight coastal water bodies in southeastern Mexico was performed. To obtain data comparable to those that were used in a previous study, data from the Los Petenes mollusks were obtained by collection of sediment cores 10 cm in diameter at a depth of 15 cm at 20 sites in...

A new mini box corer for sampling muddy bottoms in antarctic shallow waters BABT
Echeverría,Carlos Alejandro; Lavrado,Helena Passeri; Campos,Lúcia; Paiva,Paulo Cesar de.
A new Mini Box Corer (MBC-GEAMB) was developed for bottom sampling in Antarctic shallow waters down to 100 m depth from a small vessel. It consists of a detachable stainless steel box with a total sampling area of 0.0625 m², and a closing arm with a detachable blade without an external frame. MBC allowed stratified bottom sampling and good quality samples comparable to those obtained through diving. A comparison between the MBC-GEAMB and a 0.056 m²van Veen grab (VV) was undertaken for the benthic macrofaunal composition in Admiralty Bay, King George Island (Antarctica). MBC and VV samples were taken from three depths (20, 30 and 60m) in two sites. Total densities sampled with the MBC were up to 10 times higher than those obtained with van Veen grab. VV...

Predicting biological parameters of estuarine benthic communities using models based on environmental data BABT
Rosa-Filho,José Souto; Bemvenuti,Carlos Emílio; Elliott,Michael.
This study aimed to predict the biological parameters (species composition, abundance, richness, diversity and evenness) of benthic assemblages in southern Brazil estuaries using models based on environmental data (sediment characteristics, salinity, air and water temperature and depth). Samples were collected seasonally from five estuaries between the winter of 1996 and the summer of 1998. At each estuary, samples were taken in unpolluted areas with similar characteristics related to presence or absence of vegetation, depth and distance from the mouth. In order to obtain predictive models, two methods were used, the first one based on Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA), and the second based on Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). Models using MDA had...
