Organic farming is based on low productivity environments regarding the restricted supply of inputs. Thus, to maximize the response of selection, the local breeding approach was put forward for organic agriculture. To analyse this approach, efforts of organic farmers and scientists were combined in a pertinent, participatory breeding approach using spring faba bean as crop. A set of genotypes with different levels of heterozygosity and heterogeneity were tested in four organic farms and one conventional location. Results for grain yield showed that the genotype-location interaction was highly significant and contributed to a large extent to the yield variation. The findings indicated that indeed local breeding programs could give greater genetic gains for... |

Fusarium wilt can cause total crop failure. Evaluation of Ffusarium resistance in heavily infected soil were performed in a grenhouse where the dominant fusarium species in the soil in descending order was F. oxysporum then F. avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. solani, F. gibbosum. Large fusarium wilt presure was observed and fully susceptible lines were completely destroyed by Fusarium wilt caused by F. oxisporum. Segregation in F2 and F3 in L. angustifolius showed that resistant genotypes have two dominant non-allelic resistance genes to wilt. We call this gene Relation to fusarium oxisporum (Rfo1,Rfo2). Susceptible genotypes have either two wild genes (++ ++) or one wild and one dominant resistant gene (++ Rfo2 Rfo2, or Rfo1Rfo1 ++). Crossing ‘++ Rfo2Rfo2’ to... |

Soybean has been diffusely grown in northern Italy since early 1980s. Indeed, at present the organic area (less than 3 % of the total) and the practical absence of certified non-GM productions are key issues for farmers and food processors. In 2013, four food-grade varieties were tested under organic or low-input conditions in three environments of Friuli, NE Italy. Environments had a large impact on grain yields, genotypes on grain composition. Late planting resulted in lower yields and high-protein seeds. Seed protein levels were associated to visual seed quality. |

Spores of common bunt (Tilletia caries) was sampled from different places in Denmark in 2000-2005 and maintained as a bulk sample on susceptible varieties. In 2011 and 2012, spores were harvested from selected infected varieties, and used to reinoculate the same variety from where they were harvested. 98 out of 240 tested varietes had an increase of infection from this inoculation method compared with infection from the bulk spore sample. This is interpreted as a sign of virulence development. Using this method on the differential varieties for bunt resistance and other varieties with known bunt resistance genes indicated that virulence races were present able to infect varieties having resistance genes Bt-1, Bt-2, Bt-3, Bt-4 Bt-5, Bt-7, Bt-8, Bt-10 and... |

The European Project LIVESEED on boosting organic seed and plant breeding across Europe (www.liveseed.eu) and the European Consortium of Organic Plant Breeding (ECO-PB, www.eco-pb.org) aim to discuss opportunities and hallenges of registration of heterogeneous material and organic varieties with the CPVO, the national examination offices (EO) and the observers (DG Sante, ESA, Plantum, EPO,POV, CIOPORA, BLW, Food Safety Authority). We will present the scientific concept of heterogeneous material, first results and experiences of the running “temporary experiment providing for certain derogations for the marketing of populations” and discuss possible tools to identify, describe and trace such material. Further, we would like to discuss consequences of the... |

European bird cherry, as a varietive, tolerant and ornamental wild species, is able to contribute to the biodiversity of rural and urban ecosystems in Nordic countries. Therefore field studies to select the best origins for landscape horticulture are recommended. The analyses of the leaf chemical profiles of different varieties would further enlighten the taxonomy and the insect resistance (parasite-assisted or stress-mediated) of this valuable woody species. |
