A Century of Synthetic Fertilizer: 1909-2009 Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
This year marks a centenary of the synthetic fertilizer industry. German chemists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, in 1909 demonstrated their industrial process for the manufacture of ammonia. The achievement won them accolades including Nobel Prizes. The output of their Haber-Bosch process can be used for either peace or war, agriculture or munitions, and the rapid adoption by Germany of this industrial process is credited with prolonging WW1. Most of the synthetic nitrogenous fertilizer of the past century, and right up to the present, has been manufactured using the Haber-Bosch process. The use of synthetic fertilizers has led to significant negative environmental outcomes. Rudolf Steiner was an early voice against chemical agriculture. Steiner's...

Perceptions, values and behaviour: The case of organic foods Organic Eprints
Wier, Mette; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Millock, Katrin; O'Doherty Jensen, Katherine; Rosenkvist, Lars.
This analysis of the Danish organic food market investigates the relationships between household purchasing behaviour and stated values, motives and concerns. Attention is also given to the importance of sales chan-nels and the functions of labelling. We identify the specific attributes that induce consumers to purchase or-ganic foods, distinguishing ‘private’ from ‘public’ valued attributes. Using household level information on stated values and concerns and data regarding real market purchases for approximately 2000 households dur-ing the period 1997-2001, the declared values and actual market behaviour of the same households are com-pared. We find that household propensity to purchase organic foods increases significantly with the declared importance...

A row cropping system with cover crops for balancing weed and soil fertility management in organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Phan, Hong TT; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
This manuscript shows the result from testing the new row cropping system for its ability to produce a balanced combination of inter-row hoeing and undersown cover crop in order to obtain a sufficient N supply and an effective weed control as well as to identify optimal sowing time for high biomass production and cover crop species suited for late undersowing. The new system produced a sufficient N supply and an acceptable weed control effect, leading to an improvement in the subsequent crop yield. Yield in this system is potentially improved further because some managements are suggested to increase its weed control effect, especially for the perennial creeping thistle cirsium arvense.

The World of Organic Agriculture – Density-equalizing Map Organic Eprints
Paull, John; Hennig, Benjamin.
The World Map of Organic Agriculture presents countries as proportional in size to their share of the total of world organic hectares. Such a map can be referred to as an equal-area cartogram or a density-equalising map. Equal-density cartograms are a tool for presenting a fresh view of tabulated geographic data sets. The World Map of Organic Agriculture accounts for all of the hectares of organically managed agricultural land (certified organic and in-conversion organic) reported by FiBL and IFOAM in 'The World of Organic Agriculture - Statistics & Emerging Trends 2013'. The map visually reveals relationships between the territories of the world and highlights the regional strengths and weaknesses of the global diffusion of organic agriculture. The...

Dalmore Farm: Victoria’s first biodynamic farming venture (1933-1934) Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Dalmore Farm (1933-1934) was Victoria’s first biodynamic farming venture. A letter, written in Milan, Italy, in Italian in 1934 by Rosa Genoni (1867-1954) \ enables details of this venture to be finally revealed. Rosa wrote of her youngest brother, Ernesto Genoni (1885-1975): “Now Ernesto … is at Dalmore, a farm of my brother Marino (the father of the boy [Alfredo Genoni (1913-1999)] who was sent to us years ago from Australia and we sent him to Dornach where he stayed for two years, and two more to the school at Stuttgart) and in part by my brother Angelo, who asked Ernesto to go and organise the farm biologically”. “Ernesto had a small wooden house built there for his use. It has only two rooms but it must be fairly comfortable, as Ernesto invited...

Koberwitz (Kobierzyce): In the footsteps of Rudolf Steiner Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
“Now once again we have made a great step forward!” exclaimed Rudolf Steiner on the drive back from Koberwitz. Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) can fairly be regarded as the birthplace of biodynamic agriculture. Rudolf Steiner delivered eight lectures at the Koberwitz Chateau (Schloss Koberwitz) in German in the summer of 1924 (7-16 June). There were 111 attendees, 30 women and 81 men, who came from six countries: Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Sweden. The audience included farmers, estate managers, doctors, priests, teachers, artists, and engineers who all came to hear Steiner’s vision for agriculture. A witness observed “Seldom have I seen him so joyfully moved after the completion of a task as in this moment after the agricultural...

Organic Farming and Market Development in Europe and the European Union Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga; Schaack, Diana; Lernoud, Julia.
In this chapter, the 2016 data on the organic sector in Europe and the European Union are summarized. The development of the European and the European Union’s organic sector in 2016 was characterized by two trends. On the one hand, the market showed a double-digit growth rate again (11.4 percent in Europe; 12 percent in the European Union). On the other hand, organic farmland growth continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the previous years, increasing by 6.7 percent in Europe and 8.2 percent in the European Union. The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area (Figure 68) has been occurring for several years, showing that production is still not keeping pace with consumer demand.

„Ökologische Modernisierung“ durch Biologischen Landbau in Österreich? Organic Eprints
Schermer, Dr. Markus.
Organic farming is finding increasingly widespread acceptance. The paper tries to examine whether the growth of organic farming is also connected with a transformation of economy and society under the heading of “ecological modernisation”. We use the example of Austria which is the EU-country with the highest percentage of organic farm area. The results of a survey undertaken in the frame of the EU-Project „Further Development of Organic Farming Policy in Europe, with Particular Emphasis on EU Enlargement“, EU-CEE-OFP are interpreted along the grid of ecological modernisation (GIBBS, 2000). The analysis suggests that the impact of organic farming was so far moderate and only towards a weak form. However there is a certain future potential in the...

On the one hand, the market showed a double-digit growth rate again (10.5 percent in Europe; 10.9 percent in the European Union). On the other hand, organic farmland growth continued to be slower than that of the market, but it was considerably faster than in the first years of the previous decade, increasing by 7.9 percent in Europe and 6.4 percent in the European Union. The trend of the market growing at a faster rate than the area has been occurring for several years, showing that production is still not keeping pace with consumer demand. However, the total...

Evaluation of the EU legislation on organic farming Organic Eprints
Organic farming has been regulated by EU law since the beginning of the 1990s. The uniform EU-wide laws for the production, control, labelling and import of organic products has been revised a number of times since their introduction and were replaced with the current Organic Regulation (EC) 834/2007. In light of the comprehensive legal changes and the growth of the organic industry, the question arises of how effective and relevant the current rules are. For this reason, the relevance and effectiveness of the production, control and labelling regulations, as well as determination with regard to trade with third party countries has been analysed. The results of the evaluation make clear that the aims and principles of organic farming are essentially...

Organic action plans: Mainstreaming organic farming in public policy Organic Eprints
Sanders, Jürn; Schmid, Otto.
Organic farming is supported in Europe3 in different ways. Most countries have implemented specific area payments for organic farming through agri-environmental schemes to finance their contribution to environmental protection and the provision of other public goods. In the European Union these measures are typically financed through national or regional rural development programmes (RDPs) that are co-funded by the EU and Member State administrations. These payments are an important foundation for the financial performance of organic farms, since they compensate them for additional costs or income foregone due to their organic commitments. Besides payments, a wide range of other public policy instruments exist, such as financial support for processing and...
