A Saharan soil, considered as a proxy for Saharan aerosols, was used to perform radio-labelled phosphate adsorption experiments using (33)PO(4)(3-): leached particles were exposed to poisoned western Mediterranean seawater for varying lengths of time. The measured adsorption capacity of Saharan dust for phosphate was 0.13 mumol g(-1). Considering this value and an annual Saharan dust deposition of 12.5 t km(-2) year(-1), we show that Saharan particles do not represent a significant sink for seawater phosphate in the western Mediterranean Sea. This result is in agreement with that determined from a similar approach conducted in the eastern basin. As a consequence, the unusual NIP ratio measured in the whole Mediterranean Sea (up to 29) cannot be explained... |

Establishment of the facies terminology to the upper margin sediments. Main difficulties lies to the benthic communities assemblages and with the internal relations of sands and gravels deposits. These researches deals of the preservation and potentialities of shoreline and bottoms management. We use here some quantitative methods of data treatment in relation to a variable choice and sectorial sampling areas, analysis of variance, factorial analysis (correspondances) and clustering. The sampling areas are: Maguelonne, bays of Saintes Maries de la Mer and Beauduc, roadsteads of Giens and Hyères, Saint Tropez peninsula and golf of Frejus. Sometimes, the monitoring network results provide an inhibited point of view to understand bacteriological process on the field. We must go further in contamination spatial or temporal structures to obtain a global picture. At Leucate, if a part of bacteriological contamination is correlated to precipitations, the main environmental factor to explain local variability seems to be the monthly variability population. This fact, completed by a spatial design, reveals a concentric gradient in the shellfish farrning area. Feeding behaviour of adult European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) was studied in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) in relation to major abiotic and biotic factors. Observations were made during the main spawning period (summer) for two years, data were collected through hydrological pro-tiling, zooplankton hauls and fish trawling performed in areas of high anchovy density. Temperature, salinity and zooplankton biomass were stratified in the study areas, with cladocerans numerous above the thermocline whereas copepods were dominant below. Engraulis encrasicolus was strictly zooplanctivorous during the main spawning season with copepod and crustacean larvae dominating in stomach contents.
