Response of vegetation to sheep dung addition in a degraded Cerrado area AGRIAMBI
Teixeira,Danilo S.; Rezende,Andreia A.; Lannes,Luciola S..
ABSTRACT Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil and is classified as a biodiversity hotspot. The establishment of hydroelectric power stations in Brazil originated degraded areas due to the removal of soil for construction of dams, in which native vegetation sometimes fails to reestablish due to the bad soil conditions. Sheep excrete most of the nutrients they ingest, such as phosphorus, calcium, potassium and nitrogen. This study aimed at investigating whether sheep dung contributes to the improvement of soil quality and stimulates the process of ecological succession in areas affected by the construction of the hydroelectric power station of Ilha Solteira. Four areas were selected, located at the Experimental Farm of Unesp Ilha Solteira/SP, and...

Barreto,Aurelir N.; Nascimento,Joab J. V. R. do; Medeiros,Everaldo P. de; Nóbrega,Janiny A. da; Bezerra,Jose R. C..
Agricultural use of wastewater is an alternative to increase water availability, especially in semiarid regions. However, it may cause undesirable chemical changes in the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of wastewater irrigation and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cultivation on the chemical attributes of a Fluvic Neosol. The experimental design was in a randomized block, in split-plot scheme, where the main plots were represented by the treatments of irrigation water and castor bean cultivation, and the subplots were the soil layers, with three replications. The treatments were T1 - wastewater irrigation + castor bean cultivation ; T2 - mixture of supply water and wastewater (1:1 ratio) + castor bean cultivation; T3 - supply...

Variability in per capita oogonia and sporophyte production from giant kelp gametophytes (Macrocystis pyrifera, Phaeophyceae) RChHN
MUÑOZ,VERÓNICA; HERNÁNDEZ-GONZÁLEZ,MARÍA C.; BUSCHMANN,ALEJANDRO H.; GRAHAM,MICHAEL H.; VÁSQUEZ,JULIO A..
Vegetative growth and fertility of kelp gametophytes are thought to be antagonistic, such that most successful kelp recruitment is assumed to result from fertilization of single oogonia released from unicellular female gametophytes. We used laboratory culture experiments to study the effect of temperature and nutrient addition on the per capita production of oogonia and sporophytes from Macrocystis pyrifera female gametophytes. Our results indicate that individual multicellular female gametophytes can give rise to more than one oogonium and that per capita oogonia production significantly increases with the enhancement of culture conditions (i.e., decreased temperature and increased nutrient concentration). Furthermore, the production of multiple oogonia...

Trophic parameters and method validation in Lake Riñihue (North Patagonia: Chile) from 1978 through 1997 RChHN
WOELFL,STEFAN; VILLALOBOS,LORENA; PARRA,ÓSCAR.
Lake Riñihue is the last in a chain of glacially derived oligotrophic lakes in southern Chile and was the subject of limnological research by Dr. Hugo Campos and co-workers at the Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile, since the 1970's. Prof. Campos died in the field in 1998, and this paper now presents a review of these data with comments on methodology relevant to trophic parameters of this lake. Data are presented on inorganic nutrients, chlorophyll a, phytoplankton biomass, primary production and Secchi depth obtained over a period of 21 years between 1978 and 1997 in order to evaluate potential changes in these parameters over time. Non-parametric Wilcoxon rank sum tests were applied to determine temporal trends and revealed: (1) total...

Use of Spirulina platensis in treatment of fish farming wastewater Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Nogueira,Sara Monaliza Sousa; Souza Junior,José; Maia,Hudson Damasceno; Saboya,Jefferson Pablo Sousa; Farias,Wladimir Ronald Lobo.
ABSTRACT Each year, the amount of fish produced around the world increases, which contributes to several environmental impacts such as the disposal of effluents without treatment in the environment. This scientific work had as main objective the development of Spirulina platensis in fish effluents, a low cost medium for the production of biomass, in order to reduce the levels of some inorganic nutrients to reach the allowed parameters by the Brazilian environmental standards for effluent disposal and to enable reuse of the water. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings were produced in fresh water. The effluent generated by the culture was transferred to a pool where seawater was added until the salinity of 10 ‰ was reached. A strain of...

Germination of fungal pathogen spores in calcium, copper, manganese and zinc chelated with aminoacids Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Lorenzetti,Eloisa; Tartaro,Juliano; Alves Neto,Alfredo José; Stangarlin,José Renato; Portz,Roberto Luis; Kuhn,Odair José.
ABSTRACT Due to the environmental impact generated using fungicides, new alternatives for disease control have been arising, such as the use of nutrients that may act on the development of certain pathogens or decrease the host susceptibility to diseases. The objective of this work was to verify if chelates of calcium, copper, manganese and zinc inhibit the germination of Puccinia sorghi, Cercospora sp. and Exserohilum turcicum spores. Two experiments were carried out: the first with agar-water culture medium, where the treatments and spores were placed at the same moment and the second using corn leaves as substrate, where treatments were administered zero, one, two, three, four and five hours after the spores are sprayed. Calcium, copper, manganese and...

Efficiency of aquatic macrophytes to treat Nile tilapia pond effluents Scientia Agricola
Henry-Silva,Gustavo Gonzaga; Camargo,Antonio Fernando Monteiro.
The effluents from fish farming can increase the quantity of suspended solids and promote the enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus in aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of three species of floating aquatic macrophytes (Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes and Salvinia molesta) to treat effluents from Nile tilapia culture ponds. The effluent originated from a 1,000-m² pond stocked with 2,000 male Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The treatment systems consisted of 12 experimental tanks, three tanks for each macrophyte species, and three control tanks (without plants). Water samples were collected from the: (i) fish pond source water, (ii) effluent from fish pond and (iii) effluents from the...

The nutritional value of leaves of selected berry species Scientia Agricola
Biel,Wioletta; Jaroszewska,Anna.
ABSTRACT: Although the medicinal properties of berry fruit are well known, there is relatively little information available concerning the applications of other parts of berry plants. Thus, in this study we determined the nutritional value of the leaves of selected berry species and their possible application in health promoting diets. The levels of nutrients, and macro- and microelements in the leaves of four species collected from allotment gardens in the city of Szczecin, Poland (53°26′17″ N, 14°32′32″ E; altitude 7 m a.s.l.) were identified: raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.), blackberry (Rubus fruticosus L.), chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa L.), and sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.). Sea buckthorn leaves were the richest source of protein, raspberry...

Decline of phosphorus, copper, and zinc in anaerobic swine lagoon columns receiving pretreated influent Scientia Agricola
Szögi,Ariel A.; Vanotti,Matias B..
ABSTRACT Land application of both anaerobic lagoon liquid and sludge can increase nutrient accumulation beyond the soil’s assimilative capacity and become a threat to water quality in regions with intensive, confined swine production. In a 15-month meso-scale column study, we evaluated the effect of manure pretreatment on the reduction of total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive P (SRP), and total copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in swine lagoons using (i) enhanced solid-liquid separation (SS) and (ii) solid-liquid separation plus biological nitrogen treatment with nitrification-denitrification (SS + NDN). A conventional anaerobic lagoon treatment was included as a control. A mass flow balance revealed that with both pretreatments the...

Can land use changes alter carbon, nitrogen and major ion transport in subtropical brazilian streams? Scientia Agricola
Silva,Daniela Mariano Lopes da; Ometto,Jean Pierre Henry Balbaud; Lobo,Gré de Araújo; Lima,Walter de Paula; Scaranello,Marcos Augusto; Mazzi,Edmar; Rocha,Humberto Ribeiro da.
Several studies in tropical watersheds have evaluated the impact of urbanization and agricultural practices on water quality. In Brazil, savannas (known regionally as Cerrados) represent 23% of the country's surface, representing an important share to the national primary growth product, especially due to intense agriculture. The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive evaluation, on a yearly basis, of carbon, nitrogen and major ion fluxes in streams crossing areas under different land use (natural vegetation, sugar cane and eucalyptus) in a savanna region of SE Brazil. Eucalyptus and sugar cane alter the transport of the investigated elements in small watersheds. The highest concentration of all parameters (abiotic parameters, ions, dissolved...

Environmental quality improvement of agricultural lands through silvopasture in southeastern United States Scientia Agricola
Nair,Vimala D.; Haile,Solomon G.; Michel,Gérard-Alain; Nair,P.K. Ramachandran.
We hypothesized that, because of the ability of trees to sequester carbon (C) in the deep soil profile and remove excess nutrients from soils, the silvopastoral agroforestry system could enhance the environmental quality of the agricultural lands. To test this hypothesis, two sets of experiments were conducted in two soil orders in Florida, Spodosols and Ultisols, with two major objectives: i) determining the soil C accumulation and tracing the plant sources of C in soil fractions, and ii) quantifying water soluble phosphorus (WSP) and estimating the Soil P Storage Capacity (SPSC). Total C in both soil orders was greater under silvopasture than in treeless pastures, particularly at lower depths. Stable-isotope signature analysis suggested that C3 plants...

AMMONIA TOXICITY AFFECTS CATIONS UPTAKE AND GROWTH IN PAPAYA PLANTS INCLUSIVE WITH SILICON ADDITION Acta biol.Colomb.
SANTOS SILVA,Bruna; MELLO PRADO,Renato de; CALERO HURTADO,Alexander; APARECIDA DE ANDRADE,Renata; PEREIRA DA SILVA,Gilmara.
ABSTRACT High ammonia (NH4 +) concentration can exert stress on many plants, which causes nutritional disorders and reduction on plant growth. However, depending on the intensity of the stress, it may be attenuated by silicon. In this work, the response of impact of cations and silicon accumulations and plant growth in cultivated papaya plants was investigated under different toxic ammonia concentrations regardless of the presence of silicon (Si). The experiment was conducted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) with papaya seedlings, variety 'Grupo Formosa' (Calimosa híbrida 01), grown in a glass greenhouse, in 1.7 dm3 pots filled with pine and coconut fiber-based substrate. The experimental design was a randomized block design, in a 5 x 2...

Considerations regarding the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii under low light availability in a low phosphorus lake Acta Botanica
Tonetta,Denise; Hennemann,Mariana Coutinho; Brentano,Débora Monteiro; Petrucio,Mauricio Mello.
ABSTRACTAlthough many studies have shown that the dispersion, increased abundance and dominance of cyanobacteria can be attributed to nutrient enrichment, we discuss features contributing to the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii in a shallow, polymictic, subtropical coastal lake with low phosphorus and light limitation (Peri Lake). The presence and dominance of C. raciborskii in an environment with such characteristics emphasizes the idea that nutrients alone do not explain the high density of this cyanobacterium. Other features should be considered in explaining this species dominance, such as phosphorus storage and physiological flexibilitywhich seem to be key features to high densities in low phosphorus systems.

Spore germination, early development and some notes on the effects of in vitro culture medium on Frullania ericoides (Nees) Mont. (Frullaniaceae, Marchantiophyta) Acta Botanica
Silva-e-Costa,Juliana da Costa; Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira; Resende,Cristiano Ferrara de; Peixoto,Paulo Henrique Pereira.
ABSTRACT In bryophytes, establishment can occur by a sexual or asexual process, but the production of spores enables colonization of a wider range of habitats and substrates than can asexual propagules. Successful germination is critical for establishment in a new environment. This paper addresses germination and sporeling development in Frullania ericoides, a leafy liverwort species. Fresh spores were inoculated in vitro in different culture strengths of Knop’s nutrient solution (one-fourth strength, half strength, full strength, one and a half strength and double strength), in order to evaluate the effects of this solution on spore germination and on the development of external protonema. On the first assessment, spore germination was observed at all the...
