Etudes sur la pathologie des huîtres ArchiMer
Balouet, G..
French summary: In 1974, at the request of a group of oyster farmers in the Brittany region, the Pathology Laboratory of the U.E.R. Medicine of Brest undertook a series of theoretical and applied research projects concerning the problem of flat oyster digestive gland disease, due to Marteilia refringens, the primary economic problem of that time. In 1978, in the research report of Contract C.N.E.X.O. 77/1690, the main results obtained since the beginning of the study of the parasitosis were made public. The present report has as its objective to show: - The results obtained in 1978-1979 while monitoring the parasitosis, and most especially the epidemiological evolution of the disease; - Information concerning the presence of other infectious diseases...

Experimental transmission of Marteilia refringens with special consideration of its life cycle ArchiMer
Berthe, Franck; Pernas, Maria; Zerabib, Maamar; Haffner, Philippe; Thebault, Anne; Figueras, Antonio.
Ever since its first description the paramyxean parasite Marteilia refringens has been recognised as one of the most significant pathogens of bivalve molluscs. The existence of a complex life cycle has been postulated by many authors. However, the transmission route of M. refringens and its life cycle remain unresolved. Experimental observations are presented here that may help lead to a satisfactory hypothesis of the M. refringens life cycle. Trials were performed to test the infectivity of purified early and late stages of M. refringens by different routes of inoculation. Horizontal transmission was also tested by cohabitation with carriers in experimental tanks. Field cohabitation and exposure to natural sources of the parasite helped examine the role...

His, Edouard; Tige, Gilbert; Rabouin, Marie-agnès.

The Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA) and the Berlin Oyster Recommendation: bringing back a key ecosystem engineer by developing and supporting best practice in Europe ArchiMer
Pogoda, Bernadette; Brown, Janet; Hancock, Boze; Preston, Joanne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Kamermans, Pauline; Sanderson, William; Von Nordheim, Henning.
Efforts to restore the native oyster Ostrea edulis and its associated habitats are gaining momentum across Europe. Several projects are currently running or being planned. To maximize the success of these, it is crucial to draw on existing knowledge and experience in order to design, plan and implement restoration activities in a sustainable and constructive approach. For the development of best practice recommendations and to promote multidimensional knowledge and technology exchange, the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA) was formed by partners from science, technology, nature conservation, consultancies, commercial producers and policy-makers. The NORA network will enhance scientific and practical progress in flat oyster restoration, such as in...

Saulnier, Denis; Reynaud, Yann; Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Le Roux, Frédérique; Goarant, Cyrille.
According to the world organisation for animal health (OIE) an emerging disease is defined as a recently admitted serious illness, whose aetiology can, or not, have already been established, and which is likely to be propagated within a population or between populations, for example at the time of international exchanges of aquatic animals and/or products of aquatic animals. Even though the emerging diseases that affect human health have been much studied, those which affect marine organisms and species of aquaculture interest in particular are poorly documented. By restricting emergence to only infectious diseases, we aim at presenting in a non-exhaustive way some scenarios of the emergence of the diseases of aquacultured species by illustrating them with...

Validation of in situ hybridisation and histology assays for the detection of the oyster parasite Marteilia refringens ArchiMer
Thebault, Anne; Bergman, S; Pouillot, R; Le Roux, Frédérique; Berthe, Franck.
An in situ hybridisation technique has been developed for the detection of infection in oysters with Marteilia refringens with particular emphasis on light infections or confirmation of suspected cases by means of histology. Although validation of new diagnostic methods is usually achieved by comparison with standard techniques, in our case the sensitivity and specificity of the standard (histology) had not previously been established. Another point to consider is that surveillance and monitoring frequently target populations displaying different levels of prevalence under different field conditions. The objective of our study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity values of in situ hybridisation and histology for the detection of M refringens,...

Larval development and fatty acid composition of Ostrea edulis (L.) fed four different single diets from conditioning to pre-settlement ArchiMer
Gonzalez-araya, Ricardo; Robert, Rene.
Survival, growth and fatty acid composition of Ostrea edulis larvae (L.) fed four different single species, microalgal diets, Tisochrysis lutea (T), Chaetoceros neogracile (Cg), Skeletonema marinoi (Sm) or Tetraselmis suecica (Ts) from broodstock to pre-settlement, were studied. Lower larval growth (5.5m to 6.5m/d) was recorded in progeny continuously fed single S.marinoi or T.suecica, whereas good growth was achieved with single T.lutea (7.8m/d). Larvae, originated from broodstock receiving Sm or Ts, exhibited growth compensation when fed a bispecific balanced diet (TCg). This did not occur when broodstock and larvae were fed Cg or T, for which single or mixed diets led to similar larval growth. Furthermore, survival was high (>90%) regardless of...

Marteilia refringens and Marteilia pararefringens sp. nov. are distinct parasites of bivalves and have different European distributions ArchiMer
Kerr, R.; Ward, G. M.; Stentiford, G. D.; Alfjorden, A.; Mortensen, S.; Bignell, J. P.; Feist, S. W.; Villalba, A.; Carballal, M. J.; Cao, A.; Arzul, Isabelle; Ryder, D.; Bass, D..
Marteilia refringens causes marteiliosis in oysters, mussels and other bivalve molluscs. This parasite previously comprised two species, M. refringens and Marteilia maurini, which were synonymized in 2007 and subsequently referred to as M. refringens ‘O-type’ and ‘M-type’. O-type has caused mass mortalities of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. We used high throughput sequencing and histology to intensively screen flat oysters and mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the UK, Sweden and Norway for infection by both types and to generate multi-gene datasets to clarify their genetic distinctiveness. Mussels from the UK, Norway and Sweden were more frequently polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive for M-type (75/849) than oysters (11/542). We did not detect O-type in...

European flat oyster - Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Beaumont, A.; Boudry, Pierre; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, a native of Europe, occurs naturally from Norway to Morocco in the North-Eastern Atlantic and in the whole Mediterranean Basin; It has been a harvested species for at least 6000 years. Natural populations are also observed in eastern North America, from Maine to Rhode Island, following intentional introductions in the 1940s and 1950s. The species was also introduced in Canada for aquaculture purpose 30 years ago and some populations naturalised in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. These stocks were imported from naturalised populations in Maine whose ancestors originated in the Netherlands.

Comps, Michel; Tige, Gilbert; Duthoit, Jean-louis; Grizel, Henri.
Some rickettsian infections have been found in French Atlantic oysters, Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis. The micro-organisms parasite the digestive diverticulum epithelium cells although not creating any damage that could strongly affect the molluscs. If not for its shape, which appears to be longer in the case of the Crassostrea gigas Rickettsia, the characteristics of these two micro-organisms seem pretty close and enabled their inclusion in the Rickettsial order.

Integration of shellfish farming activies in three French coastal environments : Mont Saint-Michel Bay, Gulf of Morbihan, and Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Le Mao, Patrick; Camus, Patrick; Bacher, Cedric; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Integration of shellfish farming along the French shoreline (around 5500 km) has been progressive, as marine bivalve culture is a traditional activity in our country. The history of mussel culture relates that the "bouchot" technique (intertidal culture on wooden poles, producing annually around 60,000 tons) was developed as early as the XIIIth century, by a refugee attempting to capture birds by sticking branches of brushwood along the shore. The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, already appreciated at the Roman period, was first cultivated in France after Victor Coste introduced the technique of spat collection at the end of the XIXth century. The Pacific cupped oyster, genus Crassostrea, now the most-cultivated in France (around 120,000 tons marketed...

Comps, Michel.
Since the beginning of the epizooty of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis on the Atlantic coast (Comps, 1970), it has been observed that the parasitosis did not develop in the Mediterranean Sea in oysters from the Thau lagoon even though a large part of the culture is made up of young oysters from Brittany. However, some episodic studies only rarely found the presence of Marteilia refringens in the oysters from the lagoon.

Herpesvirus infection in European flat oysters Ostrea edulis obtained from brood stocks of various geographic origins and grown in Galicia (NW Spain) ArchiMer
Da Silva, P; Renault, Tristan; Fuentes, J; Villalba, A.
We evaluated differences in productive traits and disease susceptibility among Ostrea edulis stocks. We produced 4 to 5 families from each of 4 oyster populations (Irish, Greek and 2 Galician) in a hatchery. Spat corresponding to 19 different families were transferred to a raft in the Ria de Arousa (Galicia, Spain) for grow-out. Samples of each family were histologically processed every month for 2 yr. One of the pathological conditions disclosed by histological examination was characterised by the occurrence of numerous abnormal cells throughout the connective tissue of various organs, showing hypertrophied nuclei with marginated chromatin and a characteristic large intranuclear acidophilic inclusion. Ultrastructural examination showed that the abnormal...

Boudry, Pierre; Launey, Sophie; Diaz-almela, A.; Naciri-graven, Yamama; Ledu, Christophe; Mira, S.; Taris, Nicolas; Bonhomme, Francois; Lapegue, Sylvie.
PCR-based DNA markers enable the study of diversity and differentiation of marine organisms at different stages of their life cycle. Our study of European fiat oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations aimed to describe their spatial and temporal dynamics. First, we analyzed adults sampled over the natural range of the species. An Atlantic/Mediterranean differentiation pattern was observed. Similar patterns of variation were found using allozymes, microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA, aIl which support an isolation by distance model. High variability was observed in the range of diversity between populations using a mitochondrial marker, a reflection of small effective population sizes in sorne locations. A 10fold quantitative difference was observed in Fst,...

A physiological and biochemical approach to selecting the ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part A) ArchiMer
Gonzalez-araya, Ricardo; Queau, Isabelle; Quere, Claudie; Moal, Jeanne; Robert, Rene.
To select the best microalgae for Ostrea edulis conditioning, four single species diets were fed to batches of broodstock, which were then compared using physiological and biochemical approaches. Ingestion and absorption were first studied, showing that Chaetoceros gracilis and Skeletonema marinoï were efficiently ingested (4.9–5.3 mg g−1 h−1) and absorbed (1.9–2.5 mg g−1 h−1) while Tetraselmis suecica led to the lowest physiological responses (0.36 and 0.12 mg g−1 h−1 respectively). When O. edulis were fed any microalgae except T-ISO with only 79 mg g−1, gonads accumulated carbohydrates from 116 to 141 mg g−1 and the extent of accumulation depended on the species supplied in the order T. suecica<C. gracilis<S. marinoï. When oysters were fed either...
