การอนุรักษ์และใช้ประโยชน์ข้าวพันธุ์พื้นเมืองในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ Thai Agricultural
Weerasak Hormsombut; Ronnachai Changsri.
Although traditional rice germplasm in northeastern Thailand is only a small portion comparing to modern popular varieties, they are still grown throughout the region. Those traditional varieties grown in the lower part of the region are mostly non-glutinous varieties, while those grown in the upper part are glutinous ones. The existence of these traditional varieties in the region is not only because of growing for sale, but also due to some special reason, such as, believes in their medicinal and nutritional properties, culture and ancestor’s believes. The main objective of this study is to preserve traditional rice varieties for farmers, with the strategic goal of protecting rice germplasm from losses. The experiments were conducted at Sakon Nakhon Rice...

Genetic breeding on the bee Melipona scutellaris (Apidae, Meliponinae) Acta Amazonica
Barros,José de Ribamar Silva.
A selection of queens of Melipona scutellaris through the most productive colonies were carried out during eight months in an orange honeyflow. Each of the colonies was evaluated by its production, that is, the gross weight production ( pollen, brood, geopropolis and wax of each hive). With this data a coefficient of repeatability was estimated by the intraclass correlation method, obtained r = 0.835 ± 0.071. The repeatibility is very high showing that the analysed data (production) is repeatable. Selection was then carried out using the regression coefficient of each colony and the respective production gain. Using these data the colonies were divided into three groups according to the method Vencovsky and Kerr (1982): a with the colonies of highest...

Development of a bioassay to quantify the ricin toxin content of castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) seeds - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v34i4.11284 Agronomy
Demant, Carlos Alberto Rauer; Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”; Auld, Dick; Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, United States; Demant, Aline Rodrigues de Mello; Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, United States.
In this study, we developed a bioassay to quantify the ricin toxin content of castor bean seeds. Existing quantification methods do not always reflect actual toxicity of the seeds analyzed, which may present lower ricin content even though they are more toxic than seeds presenting a higher content of ricin. This is because these methods actually measure the addition of ricin RCA, which is a compound less toxic than pure ricin. We decided to use in this study, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which has been widely used by the pharmaceutical industry. We tested two strains of C. elegans using different methods in 8 experiments. We examined 4 methods of extracting the ricin complex and 3 methods of exposing the nematodes. Among the nematode strains and...

Germination and emergence of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) seeds obtained by self- and open-pollination Agronomy
Santos, Carlos Eduardo Magalhães dos; Morgado, Marcos Antônio Dell'Orto; Matias, Rosana Gonçalves Pires; Wagner Júnior, Américo; Bruckner, Claudio Horst.
Seed dormancy is an important adaptive mechanism in many species and is generally lost during plant domestication because of selection that occurs through the collection and planting of seeds. We compared germination and seedling emergence in selfed and open-pollinated progenies obtained from eight passion fruit vines (genotypes). Self-pollination was performed at the button stage to overcome self-incompatibility. The experiment was a randomized block design in a factorial scheme (2 x 8; type of progeny x genotypes) with four replicates and 50 seeds per experimental unit. At 14, 21 and 28 days after sowing, the germination percentage and the emergence speed index were analyzed. The total length of seedlings (cm), shoot length (cm), radicle length (cm) and...

Rangel, Adriano Henrique do Nascimento; Araújo, Thalita Polyana Monteiro; Lima, Guilherme Ferreira da Costa; Borba, Luiz Henrique Fernandes; Peixoto, Maria Gabriela Campolina Diniz; Lima Júnior, Dorgival Morais de.
Milk production has high economic importance in dairy cattle production systems, which justifies its inclusion in genetic breeding programs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic trends of dairy traits in Gyr (167 lactations) and Guzerá (148 lactations) breeds in the State of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). Milk, fat and protein production obtained from monthly dairy controls were the traits evaluated. The expected differences in progeny (DEPs) for these traits were estimated using an animal model. From the means of phenotypic values and DEPs, we estimated the genetic and phenotypic trends in linear regressions as a function of the year of calving of the animal. Positive genetic and phenotypic trends were observed for Gyr (26.8...

Simulated self-organization of death by inherited mutations Anais da ABC (AABC)
Martins,Jorge S. Sá; Stauffer,Dietrich; Oliveira,Paulo M.C. de; Oliveira,Suzana Moss de.
An agent-based computer simulation of death by inheritable mutations in a changing environment shows a maximal population, or avoids extinction, at some intermediate mutation rate of the individuals. Our results indicate that death seems needed to allow for evolution of the fittest, as required by a changing environment.

Kinematic and spermatic recovery after selection by centrifugation in colloid solutions of ovine cryopreserved semen Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bergstein,T.G.; Bicudo,L.C.; Rodello,L.; Weiss,R.R.; Bicudo,S.D..
ABSTRACT Frozen and thawed ovine semen undergo morphological and functional changes that prevent or decrease the efficiency of fertilization. Sperm selection methods seek to improve the quality and viability of the fertilizing materials. Four sperm selection methods were employed, using two silica colloidal solutions coated with silane (silica colloidal-silane) or by polyvinylpyrrolidone (silica colloidal-PVP), and varying the volume of colloidal solution. Sperm kinematic and sperm recovery were evaluated by means of CASA. The protocols using silica colloidal-silane showed higher total motility (TM), progressive motility (PM) and percentage of rapid sperm (%RAP) compared to the methods employing silica colloidal-PVP and to the samples prior to sperm...

Agronomic performance of sugarcane families in response to water stress Bragantia
Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Soares,Rogério Augusto Bremm; Landell,Marcos Guimarães de Andrade; Campana,Mário Pércio.
Water deficit is one of the major factors limiting the production of sugarcane, especially in areas where there is a prolonged period of water deficiency, such as the West Central Brazilian region. One way to overcome this problem is to cultivate resistant or tolerant varieties. An experiment was set up at the Jalles Machado Sugar Mill, located near Goianésia, Goiás State, Brazil, to evaluate agronomic performance of several sugarcane families. A comparative analysis was carried out among the families under two irrigation regimes, one under regular environmental conditions and another under monthly irrigations during the period of water deficiency. Evaluated families consisted of 25 progenies planted in a factorial design with three replications with 20...

Genetic variability and homozygosity in a F4 castor bean population by microsatellite markers Bragantia
Machado,Edna Lobo; Silva,Simone Alves; Fernandes,Luciel dos Santos; Brasileiro,Helison Santos.
ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to identify the genetic variability and estimate the level of homozygosity in a castor bean F4 population using microsatellite markers (SSR). To this end, it was performed the genotyping of the population through 53 pairs of SSR primers. Allele frequencies were estimated by number of alleles per locus, expected heterozygosity (He), observed heterozygosity (Ho) and polymorphic information content (PIC). An array of genetic dissimilarity was generated by Nei and Li index, and hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using the Unweighted Pair-Group Method Averages (UPGMA) method. Polymorphism was detected in a total of eight loci (15.09%) of the 53 evaluated, with the presence of two alleles per locus. Allele...

Early selection of elite plants in Asparagus Bragantia
COINTRY,ENRIQUE LUIS; LÓPEZ ANIDO,FERNANDO SEBASTIÁN; GATTI,ILEANA; CRAVERO,VANINA PAMELA; FIRPO,INÉS TERESA; GARCÍA,STELLA MARIS.
In order to establish an efficient selection criterion the variability in three asparagus populations was evaluated defining the most important yield components and analysing its evolution along three growing seasons. The yield components, coefficient of variation (CV) and the proportion of plants contributing to 80% of the total yield were estimated. The elite plants were selected by mean of total yield and clusters techniques. Multiple regression showed that spear number (SN) and spear weight (SW) were the most important yield components. In every population, total yield (TY) and SN showed the highest values of CV, independently of sex. 69% of the plants contributed to the 80% of the total yield in the first year while in the second and third year the...

Selection of candidate fish species for farming in the bay of Guaratuba, Brazil BABT
Bouchereau,Jean-Luc; Chaves,Paulo T.; Albaret,Jean-Jacques.
An inventory of the maximum length (ML) reached by 57 species of fishes living in the mangrove of Guaratuba, Brazil, was undertaken with an aim to evaluate the relationship between the ecosystem and the size of individuals. For each of these species, the maximum length found in the region were compared with those available in existing literature. The majority of populations presented individuals whose length reached at least 40% than the known maximum length for the species, although only 19.3% were longer than 300mm in absolute value. Population of the other species were represented only by individuals either in their initial development phases, or reduced length as compared to the maximum length known elsewhere for the same species. In this mangrove,...

Positive, negative and marker-free strategies for transgenic plant selection Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Aragão,Francisco José Lima; Brasileiro,Ana Cristina Miranda.
In this review, the use of the most common selection marker genes on plant transformation and the effects of their respective selective agents are discussed. These genes could be divided in two categories according their mode of action: genes for positive and negative selection. The retention of the marker gene flow through chloroplast transformation is also discussed. Further, strategies to recover marker-free transgenic plants, involving multi-auto-transformation (MAT), co-transformation, site-specific recombination and intragenomic relocation of transgenes through transposable elements are reviewed.
