Rearrangement of certain Glyphipterygidae sensu Meyrick, 1913, with descriptions of new taxa (Lepidoptera) 16
Diakonoff, A..
In 1913, Edward Meyrick removed several genera from his compound family Yponomeutidae and united them in a new group, "Glyphipterygidae". After 1954, this name has been used generally, often in the emended spelling "Glyphipterigidae". The family name was not new but used by Meyrick in an entirely different sense. Former authors (Zeller, 1839; Stainton, 1854; Frey, 1856, etc.) indicated with the name "Glyphipterygidae" only one of the two main groups of Meyrick's enlarged concept, viz., the "Glyphipteryginae" or the "Glyphipterygidae sensu stricto". In spite of its existence during quite a long time, Meyrick's family " Glyphiteryginae" proved to be an unsatisfactory combination. In later years, especially recently, its highly heterogeneous character became...

The freshwater fishes of Java, as observed by Kuhl and van Hasselt in 1820-23 16
Roberts, T.R..
A catalog of 79 species of freshwater fishes collected by Kuhl and van Hasselt in western Java in 1820-23 is presented, based on examination of publications, archival materials and specimens in Paris and Leiden. Archival material includes copies of their original drawings (many watercoloured) and handwritten descriptions in Latin and German or Dutch of nearly all of their new genera and species in rough drafts and in near final or final version ready for publication. A number of the descriptions, such as that of Dermogenys pusilla, include extensive anatomical and biological observations. Study of the manuscripts, drawings, and specimens has resulted in numerous reidentifications and new records, including a number of species not previously reported from...

Books received by the Rijksherbarium library 16
NN.
This book is an annotated list of the fungi of the English county of Warwickshire. This unique survey of the fungus flora of a British county was undertaken jointly by members of the Birmingham Natural History Society and members of the staff of the Department of Plant Biology of the University of Birmingham. It supplements the earlier-published survey of the vascular plants and bryophytes of the county (Cadbury, Hawkes & Readett. ‘A computermapped flora: a study of the county of Warwickshire.’ London, 1971). There is information on habitats, distribution, and other details relating to 2,600 species of slime molds, fungi, and lichens. This book is very useful to mycologists interested in field work and those engaged in mycological surveys of other...

The subalpine and alpine flora of Mount Jaya (New Guinea): status and threats 16
Utteridge, T.M.A.; Edwards, P.J..
The highest mountains in South-East Asia are in the Sudirman range of Indonesian New Guinea; the highest is Mt Jaya which rises to 4 884 m and is still partly glaciated. The geological history of the region has left it rich in mineral deposits and the alpine area is currently being mined for copper. In 1997 a project was initiated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in conjunction with the mining companies Rio Tinto and PT-Freeport Indonesia, to study the region’s flora. An introduction to the region, including geology, glaciation and past exploration will be given, as well as the history and objectives of the Kew project. During the project, Kew made several collaborative expeditions to the area, as well as a database of all historical collections from Mt...

The generic identity of Xanthostemon brachyandrus C. T. White: Lindsayomyrtus novum genus (Myrtaceae) 16
Hyland, B.P.M.; Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Two decades ago the senior author was urged by the West New Guinea Forest Service to name a rather common canopy tree of New Guinea and the Moluccas. Among two dozen collections there was only one in flower, from the island of Ceram. Though the species was certainly new for Malesia, the absence of fruit explained his hesitation to refer it to one of the genera of the Tristania-Xanthostemon-Metrosideros complex to which it clearly belonged. It was finally described as Metrosideros nigroviridis Steen., the specific epithet alluding to the sepia-coloured twigs and conspicuously green-drying leaves. Finally, about 1960 a fruiting specimen collected by Chr. Versteegh came to hand (BW 4702) which showed by its indehiscent nature and fleshy pericarp that it could...

Rubus psilops A. Beek & K. Meijer nov. spec. (Rosaceae L.): a new bramble in the Netherlands and Germany 16
Beek, A. van de; Meijer, K..
A new species is described here: Rubus psilops A. Beek & K. Meijer. It is characterized by very short hairs, which give the impression that the plant is more glabrous than it is. The leaves are very coarsely serrated, usually with a narrow rhomboid or obovate terminal leaflet. The inflorescence is narrow pyramidal or cylindrical, with leaves at the base only. Flowers small, late.

The mysterious Carpophaga vandepolli Büttikofer 16
Junge, G.C.A..
In 1896 Büttikofer (Notes from the Leyden Museum, vol. 18) published upon a collection of birds from Nias, collected there by Kannegieter. In this paper he described a new species, Carpophaga vandepolli (p. 190). This bird is closely allied to Carpophaga consobrina (now called Ducula aenea consobrina Salvad.), but is different "by a large pinkish brown patch on the occiput and the conspicuously wine-red color of the breast". In D. a. consobrina these parts are a splendid grey colour, sometimes more or less washed with a vinaceous tinge. In discussing this new species Büttikofer said: "It is not without hesitation that I describe this bird as new, the idea being rather perplexing that two so closely allied species should inhabit so small an island as Nias"....

Moult of wing and tail-feathers in the Ostrich, Struthio camelus 16
Brom, Tim G.; Dekker, René W.R.J..
Structure and moult of wing and tail of a full-grown Ostrich, Struthio camelus, are described. In the wing, at least three feather generations could be recognized. The pattern of moult is more or less symmetrical in both wings and the sequence of feather replacement is not random. The tail consisted of 93 feathers of two different generations. Moult in the tail proceeds asymmetrically and seems to be fully irregular. The phylogenetic significance of these findings is discussed.
