Cuticular n-alkane in leaves of seven Neotropical species of the family Lecythidaceae: a contribution to chemotaxonomy Acta Botanica
Silva,Rejane Maria da; Ribeiro,Rayane de Tasso Moreira; Souza,Renata Janaína Carvalho de; Oliveira,Antônio Fernando Morais de; Silva,Suzene Izídio da; Gallão,Maria Izabel.
ABSTRACT Biosynthesized from very long-chain fatty acid wax precursors, n-alkanes make a valuable contribution to the taxonomy of plants. The alkane components of foliar epicuticles of seven Neotropical species of Lecythidaceae were investigated: Bertholletia excelsa, Cariniana legalis, Couroupita guianensis, Eschweilera alvimii, Eschweilera ovata, Gustavia augusta and Lecythis pisonis. Specimens were collected in the metropolitan area of Recife, Pernambuco, and their n-alkane fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography. The chemical relationships among the species were then evaluated using cophenetic correlation and UPGMA. Among the seven species, a total of 15 n-alkanes, with 21-35 carbon atoms, were identified and formed a consistent group of B....

Palynotaxonomy of Brazilian species of Passifloraceae sensu stricto Acta Botanica
Araújo,Rita de Cássia Matos dos Santos; Nunes,Teonildes Sacramento; Saba,Marileide Dias; Andrade,Brunelle Ramos; Nascimento,Anacleide Pereira do; Santos,Francisco de Assis Ribeiro dos.
ABSTRACT This study aims to expand knowledge of the pollen morphology of Passifloraceae and contribute to the taxonomic delimitation of the group by morphologically characterizing pollen grains of species that occur in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Thirty-six species occur in the state, one of the genus Mitostemma (M. glaziovii) and 35 of the genus Passiflora. Pollen samples were acetolysed, measured, and described using light and scanning electron microscopy. The results group the studied species into four pollen types based mainly on aperture type and number, opercular variation, and the presence/absence of ornamentation elements inside the lumina of the reticulum: Pollen type I - species belonging to the subgenera Astrophea and Deidamioides; pollen type...

Two new synonyms and a species reinstated in Phoradendron Nuttall (Viscaceae) Acta Botanica
Caires,Claudenir Simões; Proença,Carolyn Elinore Barnes.
Three taxonomic changes are proposed based on intensive collecting of Viscaceae within the Distrito Federal, Brazil. Phoradendron andersonii Rizzini, previously a synonym of P. perrottetii (DC.) Eichler is reinstated based on the following combination of characters: young internodes compressed with sharp angles at the distal ends, short spikes to 2.5 cm long, articles with intermixed male and female flowers, biseriate flowers, and dirty yellow fruits. Phoradendron irwinianum Kuijt is synonymized under P. apiciflorum Rizzini, previously known only from the type from western Minas Gerais. Finding of the type collection of P. brachyklados Rizzini, incorrectly quoted in the protologue, led to the synonymization proposal of this species under P. hexastichum...

Taxonomic studies of Amanita muscaria (L.) Lam (Amanitaceae, Agaricomycetes) and its infraspecific taxa in Brazil Acta Botanica
Wartchow,Felipe; Maia,Leonor Costa; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora de Queiroz.
We analyzed specimens identified as Amanita muscaria, some recently collected and others already deposited in herbaria, in Brazil. We concluded that two subspecies of A. muscaria occur in Brazil: A. muscaria var. muscaria; and A.muscaria var. flavivolvata. The first taxon was found in association with Castanea sativa, and the second (one specimen only) was found in association with Pinus and Eucalyptus spp. Morphologically, A. muscaria var. flavivolvata is distinguished by a shallower subhymenium and by basidiospores that are more elongated than are those of A. muscaria var. muscaria, which is the more widely known subspecies. We present descriptions, discussions, illustrations and a dichotomous key for these two subspecies.

Orchidaceae of the Grumari restinga: floristic and similarity among restingas in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil Acta Botanica
Moreira,Marina Muniz; Barberena,Felipe Fajardo Villela Antolin; Lopes,Rosana Conrado.
Orchidaceae is one of the largest and most diverse plant families in the world. The number of floristic studies of this family in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, has increased significantly in recent years. However, only a few such studies have been conducted in areas of restinga vegetation and none of those have examined the similarity, in terms of orchid diversity, among such areas. The present study sought to improve our knowledge of the Orchidaceae diversity occurring in Grumari restinga, as well to compare the diversity of orchids among Grumari and other restinga areas using cluster analysis. We found 15 genera and 19 species. Cluster analysis demonstrated that restingas located on islands are considerably different from those on the mainland, and no...

Myxomycetes occurring on Cecropia adenopus (Cecropiaceae) in fragments of Atlantic Rainforest Acta Botanica
Bezerra,Andrea Carla Caldas; Costa,Antonia Aurelice Aurélio; Cavalcanti,Laise de Holanda.
Cecropia adenopus (Ambay pumpwood) is a frequent native species on the edges of woods and clearings and is considered a pioneer species in re-colonized areas. Despite its distribution from Mexico to Argentina, this substrate has never been examined in detail regarding the presence of Myxomycetes. In the present study, the myxobiota associated with leaf debris of C. adenopus was investigated in two Atlantic Rainforest conservation units located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. Five specimens and one plasmodium were obtained directly from the field and 87 were developed in 43.7% of 200 moist-chamber cultures set up separately with blades and petioles. Fifteen species were identified and illustrated. The two predominant groups were...

Spores of Plagiochila (Dumort.) Dumort.: the taxonomic relevance of morphology and ultrastructure Acta Botanica
Silva-e-Costa,Juliana da Costa; Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira.
ABSTRACT Plagiochilaceae is a family of leafy liverworts that are distributed worldwide. It is of great importance due to its taxonomic and ecological implications among bryophytes. Most species of the family belong to the genus Plagiochila, but there is no consensus regarding its infrageneric circumscription. There have been few palynological studies involving Plagiochilaceae and Plagiochila. Here, we describe the spore morphology of seventeen species of Plagiochila and discuss the taxonomic value of palynological characters for these taxa. The spores were processed by standard palynological techniques and analyzed using light and electron microscopy. The spores were found to be apolar, spheroidal, released monads that vary in size from 13µm to 58µm...

An annotated checklist of the Arcella (Arcellidae) from littoral zone of Paranoá lake-Brazil, with a pictorial key Biological Sciences
Silva, Mariana Lessa Carneiro da; Rangel, Elisangela Reis; Lansac-Tôha, Fabio Amodêo; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Joko, Ciro Yoshio.
The pictorial key contributes to taxonomic analysis, as it lists the species found in a given environment, and points out the morphological characteristics that differs one specific taxon from the others. Arcellidae Ehrenberg, 1830 is one of the testate amoebae families with highest representativity in terms of richness and abundance, including three genera, that Arcella shows greater dispersion in different types of aquatic biotopes. The zooplankton community in the Paranoá Lake has been extensively studied over the decades. However, there are no studies on testate amoebae in this environment. The study aimed to develop a pictorial key to help in the identification of Arcella in the Paranoá Lake. Samples were taken with plankton net at 13 sites in the...
