Platyphora Gistel, 1857 from Itatiaia National Park, southeastern Brazil: new synonymy and new records (Insecta, Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) Biota Neotropica
Sampaio,Aline; Monné,Marcela.
Abstract Platyphora Gistel, 1857 is the largest genus in Chrysomelinae with about 450 species of which 181 occur in Brazil. The Itatiaia National Park is one of the most important Conservation Units of the Atlantic Rainforest and 36 Platyphora species are recorded from the park. We have recorded 38 species of Platyphora. The synonymy of Platyphora fraterna (Stål, 1857) and Platyphora fasciatomaculata (Stål, 1857) is proposed. Platyphora bilimbata (Stål, 1857), P. carolina (Stål, 1858) and P. semiviridis (Jacoby, 1903) are new records for the park; additional distributional records are provided for 18 species. Of the 38 species, 24 are illustrated for the first time.

Melosira (Diatomeae) taxa from the Iguaçu River in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Nardelli,Margaret Seghetto; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga; Bueno,Norma Catarina.
Abstract The study of the genus Melosira in plankton samples from the lower Iguaçu River revealed the presence of four taxa: Melosira undulata (Ehrenberg) Kützing var. undulata, M. undulata var. normanni Arnott, M. varians C. Agardh and M. muscigena Iwahashi. We present illustrations of the frustules using light microscopy (LM), descriptions, and comments about the morphology of the four taxa. The analysis of Melosira muscigena under scanning electron microscopy revealed unprecedented details of the ultrastructure, such as the shape and distribution of the rimoportulae at the valve mantle. This is the first record of Melosira undulata var. undulata and the second of M. muscigena in Brazil.

Leaf Morphoanatomy of Diploon Cronquist (Sapotaceae Juss.) Biota Neotropica
Lima,Renata Gabriela Vila Nova de; Lima,Liliane Ferreira; Ferreira,Angélica Cândida; Araújo,Josiane Silva; Zickel,Carmen Silvia.
Abstract: Diploon is a monospecific genus represented by Diploon cuspidatum, an arboreal species that has morphological characteristics distinct from those of other Sapotaceae species. In this study, Diploon cuspidatum leaves were characterized morphoanatomically in order to reveal additional diagnostic characters of their external morphology of the genus. The Diploon petiole presents shape and arrangement of the vascular system flat-convex, occasionally with one or two accessory bundles, many laticifers, and many prismatic crystals. The midrib is biconvex with a U-shaped cuticle on the abaxial side, and laticifers are associated with the vascular tissues. Mesophyll is dorsiventral, palisade parenchyma has two cell layers, T- and Y-shaped malpighiaceous...

New records of Leptophis ahaetulla ahaetulla (Serpentes, Colubridae) for Venezuela, Colombia and the placement of L. a. copei into the synonymy of L. a. ahaetulla Biota Neotropica
Albuquerque,Nelson Rufino de.
The taxonomic validity of Leptophis ahaetulla copei is assessed. This subspecies is distinct from the nominal subspecies on the basis of differences in the number of ventral scales, maxillary teeth and dorsal coloration. However, comparison of its type specimens with specimens of L. a. ahaetulla revealed that L. a. copei is a junior synonym of the latter. In addition, the distribution of L. a. ahaetulla is expanded from Brazil to southwestern Venezuela and southern Colombia.

The identity of Apostolepis pymi and placement of A. quinquelineata in the synonymy of A. nigrolineata (Serpentes, Xenodontinae) Biota Neotropica
Lema,Thales de; Albuquerque,Nelson Rufino de.
The correct application of the names Apostolepis nigrolineata, A. quinquelineata, and A. pymi has been subject of considerable controversy. Based upon review of the literature and the characteristics used to distinguish these species from each other, we conclude that A. pymi is a valid species and that A. quinquelineata is a junior synonym of A. nigrolineata. They differ from each other in hemipenial morphology and coloration. The background color of A. nigrolineata is reddish brown (vs. brown in A. pymi). In addition, only the dorsal region of end of tail is covered by a black band in A. nigrolineata (vs. end of tail completely surrounded by a black band in A. pymi). Both species are sympatrically distributed along the lowlands of Amazonia but A....

Mycale alagoana sp.nov. and two new formal records of Porifera (Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida) from the shallow-water reefs of Alagoas (Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Cedro,Victor Ribeiro; Hajdu,Eduardo; Correia,Monica Dorigo.
The Porifera occurring at Alagoas State reefs (north-eastern Brazil) are still little-known, with few species listed and even fewer formally described. From a total of 48 species recorded from the state, only eight belong to the Poecilosclerida, including those (re)described in this study. Here we describe a new species, Mycale (Mycale) alagoana sp.nov., and redescribe two species: Lissodendoryx (Lissodendoryx) isodictyalis (Carter, 1882) and Mycale (Naviculina) diversisigmata Van Soest, 1984, both first formal redescriptions from the Southwestern Atlantic. Additionally, Mycale (Aegogropila) escarlatei Hajdu et al., 1995 is here reported from Alagoas for the first time, in discussing the difficulties inherent to recognition in the field of small crustose...

Epiphytic Eunotia (Bacillariophyceae) on Podostemum from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, including new observations on morphology and taxonomy of some rare recorded species Biota Neotropica
Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; de Castro,Emanuela Cristina; de Azevedo Tibiriçá,Carlos Eduardo Junqueira; Wojciechowski,Juliana; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga.
Eunotia is a highly diverse diatom genus in the Neotropics. Considerable morphological variability of the valve showed in several species of the genus resulted in a quite confused taxonomy. Twelve Eunotiataxa attached to Podostemum spp. were investigated using the light microscopy (LM). Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in order to investigate the fine morphology of most abundant taxa. Samples were collected from four rivers from the State of Santa Catarina between March 2009 and July 2010. The freshwater diatom flora from this south Brazilian state is poorly known in relation to its neighboring states. Eunotia biseriatoides has intermediate features betweenEunotia and Perinotia, and the circumscription of these genera is discussed...
