In 1896 Büttikofer (Notes from the Leyden Museum, vol. 18) published upon a collection of birds from Nias, collected there by Kannegieter. In this paper he described a new species, Carpophaga vandepolli (p. 190). This bird is closely allied to Carpophaga consobrina (now called Ducula aenea consobrina Salvad.), but is different "by a large pinkish brown patch on the occiput and the conspicuously wine-red color of the breast". In D. a. consobrina these parts are a splendid grey colour, sometimes more or less washed with a vinaceous tinge. In discussing this new species Büttikofer said: "It is not without hesitation that I describe this bird as new, the idea being rather perplexing that two so closely allied species should inhabit so small an island as Nias".... |

Structure and moult of wing and tail of a full-grown Ostrich, Struthio camelus, are described. In the wing, at least three feather generations could be recognized. The pattern of moult is more or less symmetrical in both wings and the sequence of feather replacement is not random. The tail consisted of 93 feathers of two different generations. Moult in the tail proceeds asymmetrically and seems to be fully irregular. The phylogenetic significance of these findings is discussed. |

The genera of the subfamilies Betylobraconinae, Hormiinae, Lysiterminae, Pambolinae-Chremylini, and Doryctinae-Ypsistocerini are revised. A key is given to the genera of groups belonging to the cyclostome grade including species with shortened and/or (partly) widened fore tarsus. Sixteen new genera and 62 new species are described and illustrated. The new genera concern: Mannokeraia gen. nov. (type species: M. apterus spec. nov. from Australia), Masona gen. nov. (type species: M. prognatha spec. nov. from U.S.A.), Anachyra gen. nov. (type species: A. setosipes spec. nov. from Australia), Pseudochremylus gen. nov. (type species: P. angulifer spec. nov. from Australia), Chremyloides gen. nov. (type species: C. cardaleae spec. nov. from Australia), Apoavga... |

Laccaria amethystea, not L. amethystina nor L. calospora, is shown to be the correct name for the amethyst colored Laccaria. A neotype for L. amethystea is proposed and a complete list of its synonyms is given. Data which support placing L. ohiensis and L. tetraspora in synonymy with L. laccata are discussed and three varieties within L. laccata are recognized. These varieties are L. laccata var. laccata, L. laccata var. moelleri, and L. laccata var. pallidifolia. Based on these data, a synonymy list and description of each variety is presented. Laccaria laccata var. pallidifolia is shown to be the most common and abundant variety. The correct name for L. striatula sensu Sing. non Peck is L. pumila and for L. ohiensis sensu Sing, non Montagne is L. fraterna. |

Although from 1255 up till now about 47 Physeter macrocephalus have been cast upon the coast of the Netherlands, or have come ashore alive, but very few materials have been preserved and we are in the possession of only two specimens, those of 1937, the complete skeletons of which are preserved in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. Apart from these skeletons the following fragments are preserved : 1. The damaged upper part of the skull and three vertebrae from the animal of Scheveningen, 1617. These fragments are in the possession of the Dutch Protestant Church, Keizerstraat, Scheveningen (Van Deinse, 1918, p. 42, etc., and Plate IV). 2. The left humerus, radius, and ulna, grown together, probably from the same specimen as no. 1. This bone... |

The 4th volume in this series, which was initiated by German J. Krieglsteiner, is completed and prepared for print after Krieglsteiner’s death by Andreas Gminder. The present volume treats several families of Agarics, viz. Amanitaceae, Lepiotaceae, Entolomataceae, Pluteaceae, Bolbitiaceae, Strophariaceae and Crepidotaceae. Within the families, genera are treated in alphabetical order. Keys are presented to all species occurring in Baden-Württemberg, followed by short descriptions or notes to the species, including details on ecology, threat and distribution in the state Baden-Württemberg. Many species are also presented in the form of colour photographs, which are generally of good to excellent quality, and distribution maps are often given. The taxonomy... |

Years ago I received from his Excellency, the Ex-Governor General of Dutch India J. W. van Lansbercre, a lot of beetles from Sintang (Borneo), containing a. o. a male Cyclommatus of minor development, which I believed to belong to an uudescribed species. I abstained, however, from describing it for want of the major development, but gave it the provisory name of squamosus, making allusion to the large scales by which the insect is covered on its upper surface. Now, a few days ago, my friend Neervoort van de Poll handed to me for identification a male Cyclommatus of major development from Brunei (Borneo), captured by Mr. Waterstradt, and I was highly surprised to find that it belonged to the same, still uudescribed species as my small male from Sintang.... |

The “Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées” of Temminck & Laugier (1820-1839) contains many descriptions of new birds and is of fundamental importance to the history of ornithology. A new detailed review of the evidence presented by the book itself has brought clarity to the relationships between the plates and the livraisons2 of which they were a part. The opportunity has been taken to provide a fresh list of dates for the livraisons, this contains minor changes to that of Zimmer (1926) and the earlier, more widely known one of Sherborn (1898). After this study reached its conclusions important new information has come to light, which confirms the main findings. The second part of this paper reviews specific cases investigated. These relate to Asian... |

Ten new species of Braconidae (Hymenoptera) from French Guyana, Suriname and Panama are described and illustrated. Seven species of the genus Pambolus Haliday, 1836, (Pambolinae: P. pappi spec. nov., and P. rufus spec. nov. from French Guyana, P. granulatus spec. nov. from Suriname, P. duplotaeniatus spec. nov., P. hemitaeniatus spec. nov., P. micropennis spec. nov., and P. microstriatus spec. nov. from Panama) and three species of the genus Phaenocarpa Foerster, 1862 (Alysiinae: P. acarinata spec. nov. and P. insolita spec. nov. from French Guyana, and P. areolata spec. nov. from Panama). Keys to the Neotropical species of both genera are given. Some data on the distribution of other Neotropical species of the genera Phaenocarpa, Idiasta Foerster and... |

Up to now the genus Holectypus Desor (1842, p. 52) 1847, (cf. Mortensen, 1948, Monogr. IV 1, p. 26) in its restricted sense (with 4 genital pores) has not been recorded from the Senonian. So the two specimens described below as H. boschmai nov. spec. may have been remaniated and finally deposited in the Senonian of South-Limburg. They then may belong to the Jurassic species H. corallinus d'Orbigny, 1850. Though the preservation of two other specimens of Holectypus from the Limburg Senonian does not permit to decide whether a fifth genital pore is present, it is presumed there was. These two specimens are described as H. macrostomus nov. spec. As said, up to now no Senonian Holectypus is known with 4 genital pores. Holectypus boschmai nov. spec. (pl. XIV)... |
