Relationships between Agricultural policies and Environmental Effects in Japan: An Environmental-Economic Integrated Model Approach AgEcon
Sasaki, Hiroki.
This study investigates the optimal agricultural land use allocation and nitrogen application to a representative Japanese farm. The site-specific nature of numerous agri-environmental issues necessitates analysis at a disaggregated level in order to capture the underlying heterogeneity of agricultural productivity and environmental sensitivity across different parcels of land. This study adopts an integrated approach—a decision-making economic model for representative farms is combined with a stylized site-specific biophysical model, which quantifies the impact of different policy instruments on agricultural production practices and on multiple environmental effects. This model estimates the government budget outlays and social welfare, which require...

Analyzing the Impacts of the Proposed North American Free Trade Agreement on European-North American Dairy Trade Using a Joint-Input, Multi-Product Approach AgEcon
Bishop, Phillip M.; Pratt, James E.; Novakovic, Andrew M..
Mathematical programming models, as typically formulated for international trade applications, may contain certain implied restrictions limiting price responsiveness, intermediate product flows, and arbitrage possibilities. These restrictions are especially important in the case of dairy, and may lead to results which are technically infeasible, or if feasible, not consistent with market equilibrating behavior. The difficulties encountered when modeling dairy trade are described, and an alternative formulation of a spatial model is presented. This formulation allows joint-inputs, multi-products, intermediate markets, and pure transshipment and product substitution forms of arbitrage.

Buyback Programs: Goals, Objectives, and Industry Restructuring in Fisheries AgEcon
Kirkley, James E.; Walden, John B.; Waters, James R..
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries has conducted several buyback programs to reduce harvesting capacity in fisheries. These programs have attempted to maximize capacity reduction given a fixed budget. However, restructuring issues have not been considered. We explore the possibility of satisfying three different buyback objective We examine the black sea bass trap fishery and determine the number of vessels given different allowable catch levels and objectives of maximizing technical efficiency, capacity utilization, and vessels in the fishery. We find considerable variation in the number of vessels allowed to remain in the fishery given the different objectives.

THE GROCERY STORES' WAGE DISTRIBUTION: A SEMI-PARAMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF RETAILING AND LABOR MARKET INSTITUTIONS AgEcon
Budd, John W.; McCall, Brian P..
How and why has the wage distribution in U.S. grocery stores changed between 1984 and 1994? Unlike other industries in the time period, the important change in the wage distribution is not rising inequality, but the real wages fell across the entire wage distribution. Changes in labor market institutions explain more than half of the change in the wage distribution in grocery stores. Specifically, the decline in the real value of the minimum wage explains little of the decline in the mean real wage but much of the change in the shape of the distribution between 1984 and 1994, and 95 percent of the decline at the lowest 10th percentile. The decline in union coverage in grocery stores and the narrowing of the union-nonunion wage gap explains much of the...

REGIONAL PROGRESS OF THE LISBON STRATEGY OBJECTIVES IN THE EUROPEAN REGION AgEcon
Egri, Zoltan; Tanczos, Tamas.
As it is clear from the foregoing, the countries/country groups analyzed by education, R&D and labor market characteristics show a rather mixed picture. There is a lot more work to do at community, regional and national levels. This is true not only for the member states but also for the candidate countries. Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 proceed well on the road towards achieving the objectives of more and better jobs, full employment and social cohesion. These are open countries and most of them do not hinder the free flow of persons regarding the citizens of the new member states. As to competitiveness, these countries are among the best not only in Europe but also in the world. The best example for using synergies is the Scandinavian cooperation in the...

Sourcing and Promotion of Local Foods by Food Cooperatives in the U.S. AgEcon
Katchova, Ani L.; Woods, Timothy A..
This study examines the role that food consumer cooperatives play in the local food networks. Data are collected from three case studies with leading food cooperatives and a national survey of the general managers of food cooperatives. We identify the emerging business practices in local sourcing as a differentiation and member recruitment strategy for food cooperatives. Our analysis identifies several clusters of strategies used for local food procurement, based on the extent to which the co-op is involved in procurement activities upstream (at the farm), mid-stream (at the distribution center) or downstream (at the food cooperative). The results also show that when compared to other grocers, food co-ops have clear advantages in working with local...

ADDITIONALITY OF CREDIT GUARANTEES FOR U.S. WHEAT EXPORTS AgEcon
Diersen, Matthew A.; Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L.; Satyanarayana, Vidyashankara.
The value of credit guarantee programs has recently been called into question. Credit guarantees are important marketing tools in the world wheat market, both to develop new markets and to compete in existing markets. This study examines the additionality of export credit guarantees. Empirical demand models were developed and estimated using pooled data among importing countries. Models were estimated for each of the principal exporting countries providing export credit guarantees: the United States, Canada and France. Additionality of credit guarantees were also contrasted to the Export Enhancement Program. Positive additionality was found for CCC guarantees, indicating that the GSM programs have resulted in additional exports that would not have...

The role of real options analysis in the design of a greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme AgEcon
Lambie, Neil Ross.
Analysing the effect of a greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme (ETS) on energy-intensive industries using a simple model of the long-run equilibrium fails to fully capture the design implications of a scheme. When we allow for imperfect market structures and uncertainty, it is more useful to focus on how an industry is affected by the scheme’s design in moving to its long-run equilibrium. A real options modelling approach that analyses how firms in these industries are likely to respond to an ETS through their investment behaviour is proposed as a more insightful method for public policy analysis.

The W. I. Myers Professorship of Agricultural Finance AgEcon
LaDue, Eddy L..
This paper reviews the establishment and funding of the W. I. Myers Professorship of Agricultural Finance and the activities and accomplishments of early chair holders. Because considerable time has passed since the formation of the Chair, this record will undoubtedly be incomplete in unknown ways. William I. Myers (1891-1976) was born and reared on a dairy and tobacco farm in Chemung County, New York. He received his Ph. D. from Cornell and was appointed to the faculty in 1918. In 1920 he was the first person ever appointed full professor of agricultural finance. In 1932, during the depth of the depression, Myers was asked by Henry Morgenthau to prepare recommendations for a legislative program to solve the agricultural finance problem. His ideas were...

Decaffeinated? Situation, Trends, and Prospects for Smallholder Coffee Production in Rwanda AgEcon
Loveridge, Scott; Nyarwaya, Jean Baptiste; Shingiro, Emmanuel.
Most Rwandan coffee is currently grown and processed the same way it was a decade ago. Consequently, Rwanda’s coffee production and marketing system has not been able to keep up with changes in the global market for high quality coffee. Given world market gluts of relatively poor quality coffee, Rwanda is now exporting a product that fetches low prices. Despite the challenges in coffee marketing and production, coffee remains one of Rwanda’s most important official sources of foreign exchange and the drop in production is of major concern to both the public and private sectors. In an effort to assist decision makers in the coffee sector better understand factors affecting farmers’ production decisions and their attitudes about coffee, the FSRP fielded a...

Food and Nutritional Insecurity and its Determinants in Food Surplus Areas: The Case Study of Punjab State AgEcon
Sidhu, R.S.; Kaur, Inderpreet; Vatta, Kamal.
The incidence and depth of food and nutritional insecurity has been estimated and its determinants in a food-surplus area, viz. the state of Punjab, have been studied. The consumption expenditure has been found to be directly associated with the levels of income/assets in both rural and urban areas. The study has revealed that the food and nutritional insecurity prevails even in the food-surplus areas, with low-income households being more vulnerable to it. The access to food determined by the level of income and family-size has been found as the most important factor influencing food and nutritional security in food-surplus areas. Increase in production alone does not ensure food and nutritional security. The study has suggested that income and employment...

The Adoption and Impact of Improved Maize and Land Management Technologies in Uganda AgEcon
Sserunkuuma, Dick.
In spite of the fact that the Ugandan National Agricultural Research System has developed and released several production-enhancing technologies over a century, yields of most major crops at the farm level have been low. Given that about 80 percent of Uganda’s labor force is employed in agriculture, the scope for sustainable poverty reduction in Uganda depends very much on improving agricultural productivity. It is in this context, this paper examines why there has been poor adoption of production-enhancing technologies in the production of maize, which is a major crop in Uganda and what the impacts of the exiting production environment are on factor payments. This study reveals that farmers do not pay proper attention to soil fertility management, which...
