ArchiMer
Le Foll, Anne.
The study of the crab Cancer pagurus , along the Brittany coast, has revealed new information about its movements, growth and reproduction. The 1439 crab tagging has been effected either on land using the Edwards technique "suture-tag" or onboard using a similar technique to the Gundersen method of "toggle-tag". The results confirm that males are relatively sedentary, the females migrate more. To estimate growth, the author used the "capture-recapture" method and the results from crab rearing. It appeared that the molt increment is not constant and generally, so the molt frequency, it percentage decreases when the size increases.

Pets at ecotourism destinations: cute mascot or trojan horse? ArchiMer
Bessa, Eduardo; Blumstein, Daniel T.; Samia, Diogo S. M.; Geffroy, Benjamin.
Alien species are threatening native fauna worldwide and cats and dogs have well-documented deleterious impacts on wildlife. Ecotourism operators often live and raise their pets in natural reserves. Here we discuss how pets add to the list of potential negative impacts of ecotourism and provide recommendations to control or attenuate such impacts.

Life cycle, dynamics, and production of Echinogammarus marinus (Leach (Amphipoda)) in the Mondego Estuary (Portugal) ArchiMer
Marques, J C; Nogueira, A.
A benthic sampling programme was carried out in 1985/1986, in winter and summer, in order to characterize the intertidal community structure in the Mondego Estuary (Portugal). Echinogammarus marinus (Amphipoda, Gammaridae) was considered a key species in the algal-covered areas, and was particularly associated with Fucus spp. A study of its life cycle, population dynamics and production was therefore carried out. The results reinforce the generalized notion that estuaries are highly productive systems, and reflect the important role of Amphipods in the productivity of habitats colonized by them.

Tidal-induced pulses in the flow through the Strait of Gibraltar ArchiMer
La Violette, Pe; Lacombe, H.
Ship data collected in the 1960s and recent data from ship, aircraft and satellites indicate that the flow in the Strait of Gibraltar does not move in the form of continuous currents but as tidal-induced pulses. A descriptive model based on these data is presented. The model indicates that the pulses are a result of increases in the speed of the tidal streams as they encounter the constrictions of the regional bathymetry (especially the Camarinal Sill and between the Camarinal Sill and Tarifa). Periodic increases modify the regional flow so that during each tidal cycle, the eastward-flowing surface Atlantic water and westward-flowing deep Mediterranean water are alternately emitted as large pulses into the Mediterranean Sea (Atlantic water) and Atlantic...

La tectonique des plaques ArchiMer
Le Pichon, Xavier.
The plate tectonic hypothesis admits that the orogenic areas, where most of the mechanical energy vanishes, are the areas where the differential horizontal motions between rigid lithospheric plates occur. The success of this hypothesis relies on the fact that the aseismic deformations inside the plates are less important than the motions occurring along the seismic areas. The rigidity of the plates enables a rigorous analysis of their kinematic. This quantitative model of the evolution of the Earth is an incredible revolution in earth science. It leads to a series of new scientific processes and research involving every different field belonging to earth science.

Considerations generales sur l'oceanographie physique ArchiMer
Lacombe, H.
This introduction to the Colloquium recalls some of the outstanding features of the physical oceanography of the Mediterranean. On the basis of what is known concerning the budget of transfers and exchanges across the sea-surface and their impact on the hydrographical characters of the waters and their movements, and concerning the external conditions imposed on the sea, the author presents, the effect of the constraints imposed on the sea due to the existence of straits with sills and, primarily, the Strait of Gibraltar.

Monthly HPLC measurements of pigment concentration from an intertidal muddy sediment of Marennes-Oléron Bay, France ArchiMer
Cariou-le Gall, Valerie; Blanchard, Gerard.
Chloropigments and carotenoids were measured by HPLC in an intertidal muddy sediment of Marennes-Oleron Bay (France). Concentrations were determined as a function of sediment depth at low tide. The analyses were carried out at monthly intervals over 1 yr. Pigment analysis indicated that the microphytobenthic community was dominated by diatoms throughout the sampling year. Chlorophyll b was not encountered at any time or depth, indicating that no input from macrophytic detritus had occurred at the sampling site. There was a large pool of phaeopigments a, of which phaeophorbides were the major forms (75%). A microphytobenthic bloom occurred between March and June during which phaeopigments significantly increased with a high proportion of phaeophorbides...

Accumulation and depuration of hydrocarbons in the mangrove oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae ArchiMer
Delcastillo, C; Corredor, J; Morell, J.
Adult specimens of Crassostrea rhizophorae were exposed to diesel oil dispersed in seawater. The experiment consisted of a 10 days contamination period and 15 days depuration period. Oyster samples were extracted, and analysed by gas chromatography and UV fluorescence spectroscopy. The concentrations of n-alkanes, branched alkanes, unresolved complex mixture (UCM) and aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. The oysters accumulated the hydrocarbons rapidly, reaching a maximum concentration of 387.5 ug/g (wet weight). After exposure to uncontaminated seawater, the oysters were able to reduce their hydrocarbon load to 5.6 ug/g. The data indicates that C. rhizophorae is capable of preferential...

Year-to-Year changes in meteorological features of the french coast area during the last half-century - examples of 2 biological responses ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Ibanez, F.
Chronological series (1949 to 1992) of air temperature, precipitation, atmospheric pressure and wind in different parts of the French coast show evidence of important year-to-year changes, trends and cycles: seven-eight years for temperature, and around three years for precipitation and atmospheric pressure. On the scale of France, it appears that spatial heterogeneity of meteorological factors is smaller than temporal heterogeneity. New methods, such as the cumulative sums method or the envelopes of a variable reveal the interest for ecologists of essaying different numerical approaches. A comparison between climatic series and biological series of a benthic and a pelagic species is described for this purpose.

Leroy, C.; Cadiou, Yvon; Delaporte, Francis.

The Impact of Wind Gusts on the Ocean Thermal Skin Layer ArchiMer
Zappa, Christopher J.; Laxague, Nathan J.m.; Brumer, Sophia; Anderson, Steven P..
The thermodynamic and emissive properties of the ocean thermal skin layer are crucial contributors to air‐sea heat flux. In order to properly observe ocean surface temperature without disturbing any delicate fluid mechanical processes, thermal infrared imaging is often used. However, wind impacting the ocean surface complicates the extraction of meaningful information from thermal imagery; this is especially true for transient forcing phenomena such as wind gusts. Here, we describe wind gust‐water surface interaction through its impact on skin layer thermal and emissive properties. Two key physical processes are identified: (1) the growth of centimeter‐scale wind waves, which increases interfacial emissivity and (2) microscale wave breaking and shear,...

Ninth Workshop on the Development of Quantitative Assessment Methodologies based on LIFE-history traits, exploitation characteristics, and other relevant parameters for data-limited stocks (WKLIFE IX). ArchiMer
ICES.
The Workshop on the Development of Quantitative Assessment Methodologies based on Life-history traits, exploitation characteristics, and other relevant parameters for data-limited stocks (WKLIFE) focuses on the provision of sound advice rules for data-limited stock (DLS) assess-ments that are within the ICES MSY framework. This ninth workshop was convened to further address the challenges to the evidence base for the provision of ICES advice with specific refer-ence to DLS. The reviewers’ report of WKLIFE VIII (ICES, 2018) was used as the basis to draft ICES technical guidance on advice rules for stocks in Categories 3 and 4 following the meeting in 2018. The draft document reflected the conclusions of the WKLIFE VIII meeting report but in order to provide...

Depuration of copper nitrate and chloride in the Indian brown mussel Perna indica ArchiMer
Kondajii, N; Menon, N.
It is understood that the rate of bioaccumulation and subsequent depuration of heavy metals in marine animals is influenced by the chemical state, as well as the kinetics of transformation between different species of chemical salts dissolved in water. The Indian Brown mussel, Perna indica, was exposed to copper nitrate and chloride, individually, to analyse the rate of accumulation, depuration, oxygen uptake and filtration rates. When supplied in very low quantities, environmentally realistic concentrations, the rate of accumulation of copper nitrate and chlorides showed variations. When the animals were transferred to sea water, these two salts did not show any clear cut differences in the depuration rate. Irrespective of the previous accumulation...

Contribution of Meat Inspection to the surveillance of poultry health and welfare in the European Union ArchiMer
Huneau-salaun, A.; Staerk, K. D. C.; Mateus, A.; Lupo, Coralie; Lindberg, A.; Le Bouquin-leneveu, S..
In the European Union, Meat Inspection (MI) aims to protect public health by ensuring that minimal hazardous material enters in the food chain. It also contributes to the detection and monitoring of animal diseases and welfare problems but its utility for animal surveillance has been assessed partially for some diseases only. Using the example of poultry production, we propose a complete assessment of MI as a health surveillance system. MI allows a long-term syndromic surveillance of poultry health but its contribution is lowered by a lack of data standardization, analysis and reporting. In addition, the probability of case detection for 20 diseases and welfare conditions was quantified using a scenario tree modelling approach, with input data based on...

Deriving blue ling abundance indices from industry haul by haul data ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Pawlowski, Lionel; Trenkel, Verena.
A database of tallybooks, from skippers' own logbooks, provided by the French industry involved in deep-water fishing to the west of the British Isles was used to standardise blue ling Landings per Unit of Effort (LPUEs). The data covered the years 1992-2008 with more extensive data for the period 2000-2007. For each haul, landings by species, tow duration, depth and location were reported. Compared to EU logbooks, this database is on a haul by haul basis instead of being aggregated by fishing sub-trips combining hauls from the same day, ICES rectangle and gear. Moreover, it includes depth, which is a major factor for catch rates in deepwater fisheries. LPUEs were estimated from Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) with depth, vessel, statistical rectangle...

Responses and adaptations of the adenylate energy charge and digestive enzyme activities to tidal emersion of Crassostrea gigas populations in Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Daniel, Jean-yves.
Crassostrea gigas oysters cultivated in Marennes-Oleron Bay (France), face seasonal variations in the environment: salinity, turbidity, phytoplanktonic production, and the tidal rhythm of emersion. The oysters are maintained at different depths to reduce competition for space (e.g. by settlement of mussel spat). The physiological responses of two groups of oysters to different periods of emersion were studied using a seasonal sampling strategy: one group was on a flat part of the area, and the effect of emersion was studied in a short time survey (less than three hours emersion at low tide); the other was located in a very narrow place with a steep slope. This group was subdivided into three, according to bathymetric position, to study the long term effect...

The water - management within the watershed of the Charente is problematic due to the different uses made by different user groups, and because of its relative scarcity, especially during summertime. The over exploitation of the water for farrning activities poses a problem, in particular from the environmental point of view. The shellfish activity suffers from the scarcity of fresh water in the basin of Marennes - Oléron too.   The various needs of water inherent in the different practices lead to use conflicts. To improve water management, the govemment had set up various management tools. Thought problems remain. lnstitutional economics seems to be a pertinent framework to understand what are the misses and the progresses of the current management...
