Water sorption isotherms of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. Conidia Neotropical Entomology
Silva,Roberta Z. da; Neves,Pedro M.J.O.; Yamashita,Fábio; Santoro,Patrícia H..
One of the requirements for successful commercial production of biological control agent is the maintenance of viability for long periods at room temperature, increasing shelf life. The water activity (Aw) is an important parameter to study the stability in the storage of dehydrated products but its determination demands equipments not always available. The water sorption isotherms correlate the Aw with the moisture of a product; adsorption isotherm is important to define the packaging system, and desorption isotherm the drying process. The objective of this study was to determine the sorption isotherms of Beauveria bassiana conidia and adjust them using a mathematical model. The adsorption and desorption were determined by gravimetric technique at 25°C...

Temperature-dependent development of the entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Neotropical Entomology
Edelstein,Julio D.; Trumper,Eduardo V.; Lecuona,Roberto E..
The influence of temperature on the development rate of the entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson in Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) 3rd-instar larvae was studied under constant temperature regimes. A non linear model was used to describe temperature-dependent vegetative and reproductive development rates of the fungus. The temperature required to reach the highest vegetative development rate was estimated to be 25.5ºC while lower and upper developmental thresholds were 11ºC and 30ºC, respectively. The rate of development for conidia release was stable from 18ºC to 26ºC. The estimated lower and upper thresholds of vegetative development coincide with conditions during the natural epizootics in central Argentina. Non-linear effects of...

Seasonal Variations of Metapleural Secretion in the Leaf-Cutting ant Atta sexdens piriventris Santschi (Myrmicinae: Attini), and Lack of Fungicide Effect on Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuillemin Neotropical Entomology
DIEHL,ELENA; JUNQUEIRA,LUCIANE K..
Mechanisms involved in maintaining colonies of social insects free of pathogens are among the main aspects of interest in the evolutionary biology of this group. For ants, it has been suggested that secretion from the metapleural glands play an important role in colony asepsis. In this study, different worker subcastes of the fungus-growing ant Atta sexdens piriventris Santschi were compared in relation to presence of metapleural secretion during a year. At the same time, the topical activity of the secretion was tested on workers treated with the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuillemin. Based on the mean width of the cephalic capsule, six worker subcastes were defined: gardener, minor, media, large, major and soldier. A positive...

Occurrence of apocrine secretion in the larval gut epithelial cells of Aedes aegypti L., Anopheles albitarsis Lynch-Arribálzaga and Culex quinquefasciatus say (Diptera: Culicidae): a defense strategy against infection by Bacillus sphaericus Neide? Neotropical Entomology
Oliveira,Caroline D; Tadei,Wanderli P; Abdalla,Fábio C.
Cell hypertrophy was the first reaction of the gut epithelial cells of Aedes aegypti (L.), Anopheles albitarsis (Lynch-Arribálzaga) and Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) to the toxins of strains 2362 and S1116 of Bacillus sphaericus, as cells had an increase of intracellular secretory activity. Soon after the cell hypertrophy developed, vesicles were formed at the cell apical portion, which detached with the plasma membrane, characterizing a type of apocrine secretion like. The first pathway of contamination of the mosquito larvae by these bacteria is through the gut, by feeding. Depending on the species of Culicidae and on the bacterial strain used, the hypertrophy of the gut epithelium occurred between 5 and 15 min after exposure to the contaminated...
