Despite larval robustness characterized by the absence of metamorphosis and readiness for exogenous feeding based on commercial feed, the spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) displays highly variable survival at first-feeding. In this study, we investigated the use of three dietary concentrations of protein hydrolysates (PH, pre-digested proteins) (0, 10 and 20%) when newly hatched juvenile wolffish were held at three different rearing temperatures namely, 5, 8 and 12 degrees C to determine whether digestion of protein was a limiting factor for fish growth and survival. Final weights for fish at 5, 8,and 12 degrees C at day 60 were respectively 0.35, 1.19 and 2.02 g. Mean specific growth rates were 1.97, 4.01 and 4.88%/day and survival rates were 49.8, 53.4... |

The carpet shell clam (Tapes decussatus Linnaeus, 1758) is a candidate species for aquaculture development in Turkish waters. Our study aimed to assess the efficiency of three different methods (i.e., net, box and fenced ground) to maximize clam production. Two different net materials (hard plastic net and polyamide net) were tested in the net method trials. Conducted over 1 year between October 2001 and October 2002, an initial calibrated clam population, characterized by a 26.25 ± 0.035 mm shell length and 3.85 ± 0.06 g total wet weight was sampled on a monthly basis to carry out the experiments. By the end of the rearing cycle, clams reached 34.13 ± 0.38 mm and 9.09 ± 0.27 g in shell length and total wet weight, respectively. Significant differences in... |

When juvenile turbot Scophthulmus maximus and sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were fed to satiation, growth and food intake were depressed under hypoxia (3.2 +/- 0.3 and 4.5 +/- 0.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). However, no significant difference in growth was observed between fishes maintained in hypoxia and fed to satiation and fishes reared in normoxia (7.4 +/- 0.3 mg O-2 l(-1)) and fed restricted rations (same food intake of fishes at 3.2 mg O-2 l(-1)). Routine oxygen consumption of fishes fed to satiation was higher in normoxia than in hypoxia due to the decrease in food intake in the latter. Of the physiological parameters measured, no significant changes were observed in the two species maintained in hypoxia. This study confirms the significant interaction between... |

A comparative study of the growth of the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and their hybrids was carried out in 1999 in system controlled with contribution of the micro alga Skeletonema costatum. The results showed significant differences of the pondéral growth of the four studied progenies. The animals C. gigas had growth rates 1.4 times greater than C. angulata oysters. The hybrid progenies were shown more powerful than Portuguese oysters but are not different from the Japanese oysters. The ecophysiologic study showed that the averages of filtration and oxygen uptake, obtained by means of a three hours recording, cannot differentiate the four studied progenies. On the other hand, the calculation of the FTA (Feeding Time Activity) allowed to... |

The effects of Hg concentrations ranging from 0 (control) to 1024 mu g l(-1) upon embryogenesis, survival and growth of Mytilus galloprovincialis mussel larvae were investigated. Embryogenesis was abnormal in 50% of the individuals at 10 mu g l(-1). The 48 h LC(50) for D-shaped, early umbonate, late umbonate and eyed larvae were 51, 164, 322 and 383 pg l(-1) respectively. The LC(50) was an allometric function of ash-free dry weight with exponent b = 0.60. Larval growth was significantly reduced after 6 d exposure to 4 mu g Hg l(-1) and after 10 d exposure to 2 mu g l(-1). No significant differences in lethal or sublethal sensitivity to Hg were found between M. galloprovincialis and previously studied Crassostrea gigas embryos and larvae. The implications... |

Latitudinal variation in life-history traits is often explained by phenotypically plastic responses or local adaptations to different thermal regimes. We compared growth, maturation schedules and reproductive investment of female sole Solea solea between 8 populations, covering much of the species' distribution in northern Europe, with respect to thermal gradients. An energy allocation model was fitted to size–age data, and probabilistic maturation reaction norms were estimated from size–age–maturity data. We found that northern populations from colder environments had higher rates of energy acquisition and reproductive investment, an intrinsic tendency to mature earlier, and had smaller asymptotic sizes than southern populations from warmer environments.... |

The age and growth of the haffara seabream, Rhabdosargus haffara (Forsskål, 1775) from Hurghada fishing area, Red sea, Egypt, were investigated using a sample of 466 specimens. The fish length varied between 12.7 and 27.2 cm and the weight from 38.1 to 293.2 g. Samples were collected from the artisanal fisheries during the fishing season from August 2018 to July 2019. The relationship between the body lengths (total, fork and standard length in cm) and the body weight (g) was found to be significant (p < 0.05). The relationship between the body length and weight regarding the sex effect was insignificant for all samples (log W- log TL, ANCOVA, p > 0.05). The relationship between length and weight was estimated by a power regression function, with a... |

Growth of juvenile pollack was assessed at five constant temperatures (9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 degrees C) in an 84-day trial. Duplicate groups of 75 fish (initial weight 143 +/- 2 g) were held in O-2 saturated water (102-103% saturation) and fed to apparent satiation. Growth increased as temperature increased from 9 degrees C up to a plateau at 12-15 degrees C (NS differences between 12 and 15 degrees C) followed by a decrease from 18 degrees C. No growth occurred at 21 degrees C. For the overall period, specific growth rates were 0.52% and 0.53% day(-1) at 12 and 15 degrees C compared to 0.40% day(-1) at 18 degrees C. Feed intake was maximum at 15-18 degrees C (0.68-0.69% day(-1)) and it was significantly lower at 21 degrees C (0.45% day(-1)). Apparent feed... |

Microalgae commonly used as feed for bivalves, Pavlova lutheri (P), Isochrisis affinis galbana (T) and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum (Cp), were fed to Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas to assess their nutritional value for larval development and metamorphosis during two experiments. Monospecific, bispecific and trispecific diets were firstly evaluated during 3 weeks from D larvae to young postlarvae. Then bispecific diets, based on different T and Cp proportions, were assessed during a similar period. Concurrently, ingestion was studied through the whole larval and postlarval development for each diet and/or diet mixture. Because lipids are assumed to be a key nutrient for bivalves, biochemical analysis was undertaken on the second set of trials... |

The UE project "GENEPHYS", initiated by the IFREMER laboratory GAP-La Tremblade (Génétique Aquaculture et Pathologie) and CREMA-L'Houmeau (Centre de Recherche en Ecologie marine et Aquaculture), aims to establish the relationships between physiological traits involved in growth (oxygen consumption, absorption efficiency, scope for growth) and their genetic bases (determinism, variability within and among populations) in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. The main objectives are : 1. To express the maximum variability of growth, both at the larval stage and at the adult stage, in a oyster population originating from parents of various origins. 2. To check the persistence over the time, of growth performance and related physiological functions. 3. To explain... |

Twenty male and 20 female parental oysters, originating from four sites located along the French Atlantic coast, were crossed together. The 400 crosses were performed separately and then pooled to give a batch of larvae with a large genetic base. Successive sieving after 17 days at 23°C enabled the separation of the largest larvae from the batch. These larvae (i.e., sieving groups) were left to metamorphose and fix onto flat PVC collectors changed daily. Four groups of larvae representing distinctly different growth rates were successively separated during the attachment and metamorphosis of the whole population. This lasted 12 days, from the 17th day to the 29th after fertilisation. A part of each sieving group was settled separately as replicates on... |

Application of DNA parentage assignment for commercial selection in aquaculture is still rare. An experiment was performed to quantify and to minimize maternal effects on growth in rainbow trout. Six hundred families were reared until 198 day post fertilization (dpf) according to two different procedures. In the first procedure (NORM), all families were pooled at eyed stage. In the second procedure (MIN), where maternal effects due to differences in egg size were expected to be minimal, the spawns were divided into sub-groups with similar mean egg weight at eyed stage. These sub-groups were then pooled when they achieved the same mean body length (147 dpf). Genetic parameters were estimated for body weight, body length and condition factor at 198 dpf, with... |

We present a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model for the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, which enables the inclusion of salinity as a third environmental variable, on top of the standard foodr and temperature variables. Salinity changes have various effects on the physiology of oysters, potentially altering filtration and respiration rates, and ultimately impacting growth, reproduction and mortality. We tested different hypotheses as to how to include these effects in a DEB model for C. virginica. Specifically, we tested two potential mechanisms to explain changes in oyster shell growth (cm), tissue dry weight (g) and gonad dry weight (g) when salinity moves away from the ideal range: 1) a negative effect on filtration rate and 2) an additional... |
