Morphostructural Relationships and Productive Functionality of Sheep Breeds Used for Terminal Crossbreeding in Chile International Journal of Morphology
de la Barra,R; Martínez,M. E; Carvajal,A.
The body shape of an animal population determines ranges of biological functionality and productive use. In sheep, meat productivity is closely related with the body size of the animal. Some sheep breeds are used in terminal crossbreeding to give the lamb favorable dimensional characteristics, but it is necessary to go deeper on the study of the relationships between morphostructure and productive aptitude of these breeds, since discrepancies could be due to the environmental effects or the degree of differentiation between the original pool of different breeds and the local populations. The study aimed to evaluate the morphostructural characters in four sheep breeds in Chile and discuss their relationship with the productive functionality of the body...

Study of Wool Characteristics in the Aranese Ovine Breed International Journal of Morphology
Parés,P.M; Jordana,J; Pérezgrovas,R.
To date, no ethnological study on the wool characteristics of the Spanish Aranese ovine breed has been published. Fifty three animals belonging to this breed are tested as fleece samples. Each sample is analyzed for fleece type and length, yield by isoalcohol scouring, fiber length for each kind of fiber, variation in fiber diameter, and proportions of non-medullated and medullated or kemp fibers. Fiber length appears shorter than that previously reported for the breed by other authors. Fleeces of the Aranese sheep breed can be described as square, simple, "semi-open" and short with a relatively high yield by isoalcohol scouring and low medullation levels, thus indicating good potential quality and greater suitability for potential processing than other...

Anatomical Characteristics of Deer and Sheep Lumbar Spines: Comparison to the Human Lumbar Spine International Journal of Morphology
Wang,Yang; Liu,Ting; Song,Liang-Song; Zhang,Zhi-Xin; Li,You-Qiong; Lu,Lai-Jin.
Deer and sheep spines are often used as models of the human spine. A prerequisite for the use of animal models is information regarding the interspecies differences in the parameters of general interest. This would clarify the limitations of each animal model and substantiate the applicability of the obtained results to humans. Since sufficient data appear to be currently unavailable, we sought to investigate the feasibility of using deer and sheep as animal models for studies on the human spine. The objective of this study was a thorough comparison of the anatomical parameters of deer and sheep spines with those of the human spine. We employed three-dimensional reconstructions of computed tomography images, generated using figure analysis software, which...

The use of snake venom derived fibrin glue in hysterorrhaphy of ovine caesarean surgery J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
CHALHOUB,M.; PRESTES,N. C.; LOPES,M. D.; ROCHA,N. S.; THOMAZINI-SANTOS,I. A.; MENDES-GIANNINI,M.J..
Fibrin glue has been used on its own or in conjunction with suturing materials to promote hemostasis, reduce adherence, strengthen the wound site, and improve healing. Snake venom derived fibrin glue was evaluated as an alternative to conventional uterine suturing after ovine caesarean surgery. Twenty-eight pregnant ewes of known mating date were used. The animals submitted to conventional caesarean sections showed a better wound healing process. As expected, all the operated animals had retained placenta, compromising coaptation of wound edges. This had a strong influence in the results observed with the animals in which fibrin glue was used. The animals were divided into four groups GI, GII, GIII, and GIV and sacrificed, respectively, 3, 7, 15, and 30...

Ovine leptospirosis in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lucheis,SB; Ferreira Jr.,RS.
Leptospirosis is a zoonosis distributed worldwide, endemic mainly in humid subtropical and tropical countries, with epidemic potential. It affects a range of both wild and domestic animals, including sheep, which transport leptospires in their urine and, therefore, can infect other animals and humans who deal with them. Therefore, leptospirosis is characterized as an occupational zoonosis. In individual herds leptospirosis can cause severe economic loss due to miscarriages and outbreaks of mastitis with a significant reduction of milk production. The disease is caused by Leptospira interrogans, which was reclassified into 13 pathogenic species, and distributed into more than 260 serovars classified into 23 serogroups. The clinical signs of infection may...

Monoclonal antibodies to the prion protein (PrP) have been of critical importance in the neuropathological characterization of PrP-related disease in men and animals. To determine the influence of species-specific amino-acid substitutions recognized by monoclonal antibodies, and to investigate the immunohistochemical reactivity of the latter, analyses were carried out on brain sections of cattle with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, sheep with scrapie, mice infected with scrapie, and human beings with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) or Gerstmann-Sträussler-Sheinker disease (GSS). Immunoreactivity varied between the antibodies, probably as the result of differences in the amino-acid sequence of the prion protein in the various species. Some monoclonal...

A 2-year-old East Friesian sheep imported from Australia exhibited severe anemia after contagious pustular dermatitis in Hokkaido, Japan. Hemoplasma infection was confirmed in blood smears. Both Mycoplasma ovis and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemovis’ were detected by PCR and sequence analyses. In the epidemiological analysis, dual pathogens were detected in 6 of 12 (50.0%) sheep imported from Australia with the infected ewe at the same time, 1 of 5 (20.0%) sheep introduced from a domestic farm in Hokkaido, and in 1 of 16 (6.3%) sheep from an epidemiologically unrelated ranch. It is the first clinical case of sheep to confirm coinfection of these pathogens in Japan.

採食時のヒツジが使うバイト強度におよぼすオーチャードグラス葉身の曲げ強度とせん断強度の影響 OAK
HONGO, Akio; DEVEE, Enkhee; TOUKURA, Yuji; ARO ARO, Juan Marcos; HIRATA, Masahiro.
The biting force used by sheep was investigated in order to clarify the effect of bending and shearing properties of leaf blade sections of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata). Five, 10, 15, 20 or 25 leaf blade sections per loadcell from basal and middle parts were offered to sheep. The three-dimensional biting forces were digitally recorded at 0.006-second intervals using the threedimensional loadcell. DM weight per mean biting force (benefit/cost ratio) was not significantly different among any treatments, and its grand mean was 16.7±1.1 mg-DM/N. There was a significant correlation between bending strength and shearing strength, strongly suggesting that sheep may recognize chewing ease of leaf blade sections through sensing bending strength prior to...
