Silva,Jaime Andrés; Zed,Sven.
ABSTRACT Sponges (Porifera) are important constituents of littoral habitats in the Caribbean Sea. The knowledge of their biodiversity is fundamental to carry out ecological, managerial and utilitarian research. Their taxonomy is complex, but in the Caribbean in general, and in Colombia in particular, there are important advances. With this work, some sponge species of the genera Petrosia and Xestospongia are recorded and described for the first time from the Colombian Caribbean. Petrosia (Strongylophora) davilai, Xestospongia arenosa, Xestospongia deweerdtae and Xestospongia purpurea are described and illustrated. The number of records of Petrosia and Xestospongia for the Colombian Caribbean are now three and four species, respectively. In all species, the...

Sánchez, C. brevisetus E. Fourn., C. pennisetiformis Hochst. & Steud. var. intermedia Chiov., C. roseus E. Fourn., Gymnotrix mexicana E. Fourn., Hymenachne montana Griseb., Pennisetum amoenum Hochst....

Palynotaxonomy of Brazilian Viguiera (Asteraceae) Species Boletín de la Sociedad
Magenta,Mara Angelina Galvão; Nunes,Alessandra De Deus; Mendonça,Cláudia Barbieri Ferreira; Gonçalves-Esteves,Vânia.
With the aim of improving inter-specific delimitation of the genus Viguiera Kunth in Brazil, a palynological analysis was undertaken with 27 taxa, representing around 77% of all occurring species. Samples were obtained from herbarium specimens and the pollen grains were analyzed through light and scanning electron microscopy. Characteristics, including the shape of the pollen grains, polar and equatorial diameter, aperture measurements, surface ornamentation and exine thickness, were registered and compared. The pollen grains were medium-sized (25 - 50 mm), isopolar and oblate spheroidal (prolate spheroidal in V. aspilioides Baker). The observed values corroborated the synonymity of some species and also highlighted certain micro-morphological differences,...

Fruiting material of Chenia lorentzii (Bryophyta, Pottiaceae) found in Argentina and an evaluation of the sporophyte taxonomic value in the genus Chenia Boletín de la Sociedad
Flores,Jorge R; Suárez,Guillermo M.
In the present contribution, the sporophyte of Chenia lorentzii is described in detail and microphotographs are provided. In addition, the role of sporophytic characters is discussed in a phylogenetic context. To accomplish this task, first, a phylogenetic analysis of a reduced dataset of Pottiaceae genera was carried out by using molecular data (nad5, rps4, 26S) and combined data (morphology and molecular markers). Then, gametophytic and sporophytic characters were mapped onto the molecular tree and their fit to the phylogeny was assessed on the basis of their extra steps and the number of diagnosed nodes. Results suggest that sporophytic characters should be treated with caution when nomenclatural generic changes are proposed.

Analysis of type material of Pleurosigma formosum and P. decorum (Pleurosigmataceae, Bacillariophyta) Boletín de la Sociedad
Sterrenburg,Frithjof A. S; Sar,Eugenia A; Sunesen,Inés.
The type materials of Pleurosigma formosum W. Smith and P. decorum W. Smith were examined. Both species were separated hitherto by size range, valve shape and stria density based on light microscopy (LM) analysis. However, the type materials show some overlap in the size and stria density ranges, with subtle differences in the oblique stria intersection angle, which is somewhat smaller for P. decorum. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that both species share several ultrastructural features such as a thick saddle-shaped central raphe nodule, very long overlapping central raphe fissures, short hook-shaped terminal raphe fissures, general morphology of the internal hymenoccluded pores crossed by a recessed bar and presence of some scattered...

A remarkable new species of Cheilolejeunea (Marchantiophyta: Lejeuneaceae) from Colombia Boletín de la Sociedad
Gradstein,S. Robbert; Reiner-Drehwald,M. Elena.
We describe the new liverwort species Cheilolejeunea schiavoneana M.E.Reiner & Gradst. from submontane rainforest in the Western Cordillera of Colombia. The new species is related to C. adnata (C. sect. Cheilolejeunea) but differs by larger plant, leaf and underleaf size, robust stems, a 5-6 cells wide ventral merophyte, abundance of microphyllous branches, and vegetative reproduction by caducous leaf lobes produced on flagelliform shoots. The latter feature is characteristic of the genus Rectolejeunea and its presence in Cheilolejeunea is apparently a case of parallel evolution. The discovery of C. schiavoneana adds a further endemic taxon to the rich flora of the Colombian Western Cordillera.

The genus Stylosanthes (Fabaceae, Papilionoideae, Dalbergieae) in South America Boletín de la Sociedad
Vanni,Ricardo O.
The papilionoid genus Stylosanthes Sw. includes about 50 spp. distributed world wide in the tropics, approximately half of them grow in South America. The present study focuses on South American Stylosanthes. Based on examinations of herbarium specimens, as well as field observations, a total of 25 taxa (23 spp. and 2 varieties) are here described and identified with a key. Most of the species have been found to be more widely distributed than expected from the previous taxonomic literature, and the genus appears to be mainly concentrated in Brazil and Paraguay. Stylosanthes leiocarpa Vogel is new to the flora of Argentina and the presence of S. nervosa J. F. Macbr. is confirmed in Argentina. The nomenclature of S. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. is analyzed....

Gilbertiodendron grandistipulatum (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), a singular species from West Central Africa and new record for Congo (Brazzaville) Boletín de la Sociedad
De La Estrella,Manuel; Devesa,Juan Antonio.
Gilbertiodendron (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae) is an endemic tropical African genus of ca. 30 species, most of which are trees of primary forest. The highest concentration of species and morphological variation is found in the Guineo-Congolian region, particularly in Gabon. One of those species is G. grandistipulatum, which is easily recognized by its stipules (up to 18 cm long) and flowers (adaxial petal up to 12.5 × 14 cm). The taxonomy, habitat and distribution of G. grandistipultaum are discussed, extending its known distribution to Congo. A full description, distribution map and two illustrations are provided for the first time for this species.

Iodophanus carneus and I. testaceus (Ascomycota-Pezizales): Independent taxonomic identity or synonymy? A study of their morphology and isozymes Boletín de la Sociedad
Cinto,Isabel E.; Dokmetzian,Diana A.; Ranalli,María E..
The aim of this study was to delimit two Iodophanus species: I. carneus and I. testaceus , based on morphological characteristics and electrophoretic patterns of their intracellular isozymes. Twenty monosporic strains were used, including five belonging to I. granulipolaris as a control. Fourteen isozyme systems were tested, and the five having the best resolution selected: aspartate aminotransferase, esterases, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and superoxide dismutase. These analyses confirmed the similarity between I. carneus and I. testaceus , since they both produced the same band patterns, which were in turn different from the band pattern of I. granulipolaris. So, as we couldn´t find any character wich permit us to classify the isolated...

Leaf Structure and Taxonomy of Petunia and Calibrachoa (Solanaceae) BABT
Reis,Claudia dos; Sajo,Maria das Graças; Stehmann,João Renato.
We studied the leaf anatomy of sixteen species of Calibrachoa and eight species of Petunia. In Calibrachoa leaves, the vascular bundles sheath (endodermis) was formed by parenchymatous developed cells, different from those of the mesophyll. In Petunia, this sheath did not show a marked morphological differentiation. The Calibrachoa leaves could be separated according to the type of leaf margins, the distribution of the stomata on leaf surfaces, the organization of the mesophyll and the morphology of the trichomes. Based on these results, an indented dichotomous identification key was elaborated for the species of the genus Calibrachoa.

Morphological and molecular identification of four Brazilian commercial isolates of Pleurotus spp. and cultivation on corncob BABT
Menolli Junior,Nelson; Asai,Tatiane; Capelari,Marina; Paccola-Meirelles,Luzia Doretto.
The species of Pleurotus have great commercial importance and adaptability for growth and fructification within a wide variety of agro-industrial lignocellulosic wastes. In this study, two substrates prepared from ground corncobs supplemented with rice bran and charcoal were tested for mycelium growth kinetics in test tubes and for the cultivation of four Pleurotus commercial isolates in polypropylene bags. The identification of the isolates was based on the morphology of the basidiomata obtained and on sequencing of the LSU rDNA gene. Three isolates were identified as P. ostreatus, and one was identified as P. djamor. All isolates had better in-depth mycelium development in the charcoal-supplemented substrate. In the cultivation experiment, the isolates...
