The present paper deals with the recharacterization of the Gymnodamaeoidea and the erection of Plateremaeoidea n. grad. (Acari, Oribatei). Gymnodamaeidae Grandjean, Aleurodamaeidae Paschoal & Johnston, and Idiodamaeidae Paschoal are recognised under the Gymnodamaeoidea. Plateremaeidae Tragardh, Pheroliodidae Paschoal, Nooliodidae Paschoal, Hammeriellidae Paschoal, Lyrifissellidae Paschoal, Pedrocortesellidae Paschoal, Licnodamaeidae Grandjean and Licnobelbidae Grandjean are included in Plateremaeoidea. A key to the families and genera of Gymnodamaeoidea and Plateremaeoidea is also provided. |

Elaterid beetle larvae. Pyrearinus termitilluminans (sp.n., Costa, 1982.) live in termite mounds in central Brazil. Each larva produces light in the segment immediately behind its head. Larvae were observed to luminesce only during the first weeks of the rainy season, the same times as the ant and termite alate flights. Alates, apparently attracted to P. termitilluminans larval lights, serve as an important food source for the larvae. The prey-catching and food-storing behavior and the phenomenon of bioluminescence are apparently an evolutionary response by P. termitilluminans larvae to a short, rich pulse of food. Prey attraction as a probable cause for luminescence has been suggested only twice before. |

The catalogue of type specimens of the phyla Acanthocephala, Nematoda and Rotifera deposited in the Invertebrate Collection of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), Manaus, Brazil, is presented and updated to July, 2005. A total of three holotypes and six lots of paratypes of three species of Acanthocephala; nine holotypes and 16 lots of paratypes of nine species of Nematoda; and 12 holotypes, six lectotypes, nine lots of paratypes and five lots of paralectotypes of 23 species and subspecies of Rotifera are listed. Specific and subspecific names are listed alphabetically within family, followed by bibliographic citation, original genus name, status of type, collection number, locality data (host and site of infection for parasitic... |

Rhynosielis, gen.n. is proposed as new genus for Anthidium multiplicaium Smith, 1879. It has in commom wilh Hoplostelis a strong basal tooth on upper border of mandibles. Main differences with Hoplostelis are: mandibular shape, configuration of mandibular teeth on apical border, a rounded tubercule on upper clypear third, mesoscutum posteriorly bigibbous, scutellum transverse-bigibbous, preepisternal carina laminate and almost complete, basal portion of propodeum without foveae and a median carina on last three terga. |

Females of Orphulella punctata (de Geer, 1794) were captured in the field and kept in cages with food and boxes filled with moist soil for oviposition. The eggs, macerated with 0,85% saline solution and centrifugated, were used as the immunizing antigen for obtention of the specific antiserum (AS-O). Rabbits were immunized by the linphonodule injection method with two injections of this antigen, with an interval of 15 days between the 1st and 2nd inoculations. Serological tests were performed using double diffusion in agar gel with homologous and heterologous antigens. Specific serological reactions were obtained 14 days after the 1st inoculation. The antiserum of the 30th day gave 5, 2-4 and 1-4 precipitation lines respectively with eggs, female and male... |

The systematic relationships in the species of the genus Odontesthes Evermann & Kendall, 1906 were analysed by multivariate morphometry, using data adjusted for alometric size effects by orthogonal projections. The results are discussed in terms of morphological differentiation to each geographic units. It was concluded that seven species were identified in the southern Brazilian coast. Five of them inhabit freshwater environments, O. bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), O. humensis De Buen, 1953, O. retropinnis (De Buen, 1953), O. aff. perugiae Evermann & Kendall, 1906 and O. mirinensis Bemvenuti, 1995. The freshwater atherinids with the largest body size, O. retropinnis, O. bonariensis and O. humensis, can be distinguished by snout size,... |

Randomly sampled oothecae of a natural population of Gratiana spadicea from the outskirts of Porto Alegre, RS, were dissected. The overlapping of the egg membranes makes possible to enumerate the eggs in a batch and therefore to relate mortality to position in the ootheca. The ootheca of this cassid provides a spatial refuge for some of its eggs. Successful eggs of G. spadicea amounted to less than one fifth of the total in each batch. Parasitoids and predators were responsible for a high mortality of eggs whatever the size of the ootheca. The main cause of mortality was the eulophid wasp Emersonella ooecia De Santis, 1983. A large proportion of eggs were sucked dry by the mirid Tupiocoris cincticornis (Stal, 1860). The sucked eggs could have contained... |

The histology of the salivary glands of six species of Limacoidea, Boettgerilla pallens Simroth, 1912, Deroceras laeve (Müller, 1774), Deroceras reticulatum (Müller, 1774), Deroceras rodnae Grossu & Lupu, 1965, Malacolimax tenellus (Müller, 1774) and Lehmannia marginata (Müller, 1774), and a species of Milacidae, Tandonia budapestensis (Hazay, 1881) is comparatively described herein. In the glandular parenchyme four to five secretory cell types are distinguished and characterised, besides a cell type which is probably undifferentiated. The secretory cell types are classified into two groups, mucous and serous cells. Two types of mucous cells and two to three types of serous cells are distinguished. The salivary glands of the herein studied... |
