Three meals were formulated from the earthworm (Endrilus eugineae) and maggot (Musca domestica) and fish (Engraulis encrosicolus). These meals were evaluated as a potential replacement for fishmeal. This is because fishmeal could be very expensive at times. The three meals were used in feeding the catfish (Heterobranchus isopterus) fry for 30 days. The study was conducted in 1991 at the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources Farm, University of Science and Technology. Two replicates were done using four hapas in each replicate. Each hapa was stocked with 50 fry and fed. Those in the fourth hapa were not fed to ascertain the effect of supplementary feeding on the growth of the fish. Weight increment was found to be less in the fourth hapa than the... |

Trinidad and Tobago has declared various maritime zones consistent with the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The uses of these zones are extensive ranging from trade-related to recreational activities. Monitoring such a wide range of users is a challenge for many States and requires a comprehensive regulatory regime capable of empowering the relevant authorities with the means for its effective implementation. While the domestic legal and institutional framework governing marine environmental protection and conservation lags far behind that of the international arena, thereby rendering many of the applicable international laws non-operational, there are various institutions that are involved in protecting and... |

S. Tomé and Príncipe archipelago has been reported as a possible breeding ground for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) since the whaling period. More recently, the sightings of humpbacks whales have become more frequent off the S. Tomé Island which may indicate a recovery of the populations or the whales returning to a former concentration area of the Southern Hemisphere population. Our objective was to study the occurrence of humpback whales group types and surface activities in this area. Between July 2002 and January 2003, a total of 110 boat-based surveys were conducted around the S. Tomé Island and Rolas Island. When we sighted the animals, recordings of GPS positions, group size, group composition and activity were made. Single whales and... |

The catchment of Winam Gulf in Kenya supports a population of 4.5 million inhabitants. Much of the population practices subsistence agriculture in the catchment that has led to high rates of sediment erosion and ultimately highly turbid rivers. Hence, every year during the two equatorial wet seasons, large quantities of catchment sediments are deposited into Winam Gulf. In Apr.-May 2005 an intensive field investigation was undertaken to determine the exchange dynamics between the northeastern offshore waters of Lake Victoria and Winam Gulf through Rusinga Channel. One of the outcomes of this scientific study was the validation of ELCOM (Estuary, Lake and Coastal Ocean Model), a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamics model, over Rusinga Channel and Winam... |

Renewable natural resources (RNR) are a major source of socio-economic development potential in all developing countries, if they can be conserved, developed and sustainably exploited. For strategic conservation and sustainable exploitation strategies to be implemented, a knowledge of biodiversity at various levels within these RNR has to be investigated and documented in an internationally accepted manner, and preferably as close as possible to the habitat of the resources. However, human and material resources available in developing countries are currently neither sufficiently trained nor sufficient to undertake the appropriate studies. Meanwhile, various forces continue to deplete RNR and their inherent biodiversity. An attractive approach towards... |

Kenya has a growing population projected to increase to 34 million people by the turn of the century. Though the country is undergoing industrial transformation, agriculture remains the mainstay of the economy. The country has an area of about 587 900 km2 of which 576 000 km2 is land surface. 88% of the land surface is classified as arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) and the remaining 12% forms the medium and high agricultural potential land. This classification is based mainly on the moisture index as indicated by average annual rainfall and evapotranspiration. The Great Rift Valley running north/south influences and determines the drainage pattern so that from the flanks of the Rift Valley, water flows westwards to Lake Victoria and eastwards to the Indian... |

Coral reefs play a crucial role to the well-being of coastal communities in Tanzania. Coastal fisheries, ecotourism and coastal land protection are, to some extent, sustained by coral reefs. A variety of fish species, spiny lobsters, octopus, sea cucumbers, clams, oysters and turtles form the basis of harvestable reef resources. More than 30% of marine fish landings are harvested on or adjacent to coral reef environment. Coral reefs also support offshore fisheries by providing feeding and nursery grounds for some oceanic (pelagic) fish stocks. Tourism based on coral reef ecosystems is peaking up, creating new opportunities for employment and substantial amounts of income for the people of Tanzania. |

A method involving flash chromatography, semi-preparative phenylhexyl RP HPLC-DAD-ELSD combined with analytic polar-RP HPLC-DAD, was applied to separate and purify six highly nitrogenated bases and a bicyclic amidine alkaloid, the major components of the marine sponge Niphates digitalis. Their structures were identified as 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7- ene (1), deoxycytidine (2), phenylalanine (3), adenosine (4), deoxyguanosine (5), adenine (6) and thymidine (7) on the basis of spectroscopic data analyses. This is the first report of these compounds in a marine sponge belonging to the Niphates genus and the first evidence of the presence of 1 from a natural source. |

In response to the introduction of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and at the time when the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was about to be adopted, FAO organised in 1981 in Rome an Expert Consultation on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance for Fisheries Management. Experts from 12 major fishing nations participated and the recommendations of the Consultation were later adopted by the FAO's Committee on Fisheries, forming since then the basic policy of the Organisation with regard to MCS. |
