Recently, the outbreak of brown planthopper in irrigated paddy fields in the lower northern region was found frequently due to continuous rice growing resulting in low yield of rice production. RD49 is a non–glutinous rice which is insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from 3–way cross, PSL00508-3-1-1-4 /IR66738-118-1-2//IR68544-29-2-1-3-1-2. The average yield is 733 kg/rai which is 26, 15 and 6% greater than those of Chai Nat 1, Phitsanulok 2 and RD47, respectively whereas the maximum yield potential reaches 939 kg/rai. The plant type shows moderately strong culm with about 95 cm height, 102-107 days to maturity for seed broadcasting and 116 days for transplanting. Rice growth and yield are adversely affected by soil salinity. The application of organic matter is a successful technique for saline soil remediation. The experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different organic materials on the response of rice in saline soil. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replicates comprised 4 treatments: 1) no organic material application (control) 2) sesbania application at the rate of 1,000 kg/rai 3) rice straw application at the rate of 1,000 kg/rai and 4) sesbania at the rate of 500 kg/rai and rice straw at the rate of 500 kg/rai. Paddy storage may cause considerable losses and changes in quality of rice. The objective of this study was to determine changes in some physical and chemical properties of rice grains during storage. The experiment was conducted at Pathum Thani Rice Research Center during May 2012 – February 2014. PTT1 variety was used for dry season and KDML105 for wet season. Samples were taken and stored in 2 kg woven plastic sack at room temperature. The PTT1 and KDML105 samples were stored for 12 months. Changes in the physical and chemical properties of rice grains were observed. To improved rice gall midge (GM) resistance by F1 progenies’ anther culture, conducted at Phrae Rice Research Center (PRE_RRC) in 2009 dry and wet season. Sixteen crosses from irrigated rice R&D program and three crosses from rainfed rice R&D program were culture in N6 formula media to induced callus formation in dark room, 20-250C temperature and 2000 Lux light intensity for 1-2 month duration. Measurement of methane emission from major rice production systems is a methodology for data collection of carbon footprint from rice production system. Five major rice production systems were defined for methane emission measurement in 2011 rainy season, including upland rice, rainfed rice, irrigated rice, good agricultural practices (GAP) rice production, and organic rice. Gas samples were taken at one week interval and analyzed by Gas Chromatograph, GC-8A as soon as possible after collection. The research found that upland rice could absorb CH4 at the rate of 90 tons per crop equivalent to 2,258 of CO2. In 2010, Mae Hong Son Rice Research Center was done the activities at two extension areas site of the Royal Project. The knowledge transfer and community potential development project at Ban Huay Sai, Huay Poo Ling, Muang, Mae Hong Son province and the project to solve opium growing area at Ban Huay Ha, Muang Paeng, Pai, Mae Hong Son province. At Ban Huay Sai upland rice is staple food crops but 8 households or 30 percent are insufficient for consumption about 2-3 months during the year.
