ASSESSING THE COMPETITIVENESS OF JAMAICAN ACKEE IN LIGHT OF THE CHALLENGES FACED BY SUGAR AND BANANAS AgEcon
Hyatt, Karl.
Economic theory posits that the removal of impediments to trade should redound to improvement in the overall well-being of all nations. Unfortunately, for many developing countries, this has not been the case; upon significantly reducing their tariffs, they are yet to see any tangible benefits. On the contrary, they have experienced a decline in market share and in some instances significant erosion of trade preferences that they had previously enjoyed with their trading partners. The preferential market access, from which Jamaica and other ACP (African Caribbean and Pacific) states benefit, through exports of sugar and bananas to the EU (European Union), has been eroded as a result of recent rulings by the WTO. These rulings have already affected the...

Poultry welfare scenario in South America: norms and regulations Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Silva,RBTR; Nääs,IA; Broom,DM; O'Driscoll,K.
Animal welfare related issues have been intensely discussed in recent years as a consequence of changes in public attitudes and regulatory reforms that are taking place in many countries. A combination of public opinion pressure and trade policy has driven requirements for regulation and the World Trade Organization (WTO) assigned the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) to develop guidelines that could be used as international standards. However, trade disputes related to animal welfare are not likely to be resolved under the auspices of OIE, and access to international markets may be questioned in a way that does not necessarily reflect attitudes to animal production in emerging economies, such as those in South America. This paper presents an...

Agricultural subsidies in the United States and their effect on two annual Chilean crops: corn and wheat Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Osorio,José Díaz; Rojas,Roberto Jara.
The development strategies for Chile have been oriented toward a greater commercial openness. Chile and the United States signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that has triggered controversies between producers directed to the internal market due to the production and export subsidies that this country carries out. This study analyzed the effect of subsidies granted by the United States to wheat (Tritricum aestivum) and corn (Zea mays) growers (Farm Bill 2002). For the study, Technical Standard sheet were drawn up, from which were determined the direct production costs and the gross margins. The variables used (market prices, subsidies, freight costs and tariffs) and determining the average variable costs allowed us to do a sensitivity analysis, thus...

Competition of Amaranthus species with dry bean plants Scientia Agricola
Carvalho,Saul Jorge Pinto de; Christoffoleti,Pedro Jacob.
Weeds compete with field crops mainly for water, light and nutrients, and this competition is among other factors, a function of the occurrence of weed density, and the intrinsic competitive ability of each vegetal species. The objective of this research was to evaluate the competitive ability of five weed species of the Amaranthus L. genus (A. deflexus, A. hybridus, A. retroflexus, A. spinosus and A. viridis) with dry bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. - 'Carioca Precoce' cultivar), using the replacement series design. A fixed total density equivalent to 80 plants m-2 was used in pots of 2.8 L capacity varying the proportions between the species in coexistence. To install the experiment, Amaranthus seedlings were transplanted to the pots at the...

Interference Interactions of Two Species of Echinochloa Genus with Rice Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Aminpanah,Hashem; Sharifi,Peyman; Firouzi,Saeed.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative competitive ability of barnyardgrass (BYG, Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.) compared to rice barnyardgrass (ECPH, E. oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger) against rice (Oryza sativa L.) cv. Hashemi in a replacement series study. Experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replicates using a factorial treatment arrangement. Factors were two species of Echinochloa genus (BYG and ECPH) and five rice:BYG or rice:ECPH mixture proportions (8:0, 6:2, 4:4, 2:6, and 0:8). Relative yield total of aboveground dry weight, root dry weight and leaf area indicated that BYG or ECPH were competing for the same resources with 'Hashemi'. In general, replacement series curves and relative crowding...

Analysis of international competitive positioning of quality wine from Spain Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Castillo,Juan Sebastián; García,Mª Carmen.
J.S. Castillo, and M.C. García. 2013. Analysis of international competitive positioning of quality wine from Spain. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(3): 491-501. The global vitiviniculture sector is undergoing systemic and thorough changes. Spain occupies a privileged position in the global industry, ranking first in surface area, third in production and second in export volume. In recent years, domestic consumption has experienced a clear and pronounced decline, as observed in France and Italy. Therefore, exportation has become the main commercial avenue for table and quality wine. In Spain, designated quality wine represents 50% of total production and has experienced commercial dynamics in international markets that differ from those affecting table wine. The object...

Perception of performance and importance to consumers agro-industry of family companies in the northern region of Rio Grande do Sul state Ciência Rural
Breitenbach,Raquel; Bündchen,Andréa; Brandão,Janaína Balk; Caires,Leonardo Marques.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to identify the strategic direction of agroprocessing enterprises and the level of compliance with consumer requirements, as well as the position of agro-industry enterprises in relation to their primary competitors. To this end, a survey was performed, which included nine family agro-industry enterprises from the Northern region of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and their respective buyers. For this research, the Importance-Performance Matrix methodology described by SLACK (2002) was used. The strategy of the analyzed agro-industry enterprises relies on differentiation, presenting most of the items studied in accordance with consumers’ demands. Consequently, they are not at a disadvantage to their competitors in most criteria...

Olive production in Northern Iran: physical and comparative advantages analysis Ciência Rural
Mohammadi,Parvaneh; Kavoosi-Kalashami,Mohammad; Zanganeh,Morteza.
ABSTRACT: Olive is one of the strategic products of Guilan province, northern Iran. Hence, it is very important to determine the optimal production pattern of olive, given the resources scarcity and the assessment of physical and Comparative Advantage (CA). In this study, three physical advantage indices for olive production in Guilan province during 2008-2016 were investigated. Also, the CA, protection and competitiveness indicators of olive production at Guilan province for 2016-17 cultivation years were calculated using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). Results showed that Guilan province had scale advantage in olive production. The highest degree of olive plantation concentration was on 2008 with scale advantage index of 2.49. Also, results of...
