Note sur la presence d'une crevette tropicale et de l'un de ses stades post-larvaires dans l'Atlantique du nord-ouest. ArchiMer
Fontaine, Bernard.
During an egg and larval herring survey on the Georges bank, the Nantucket Shoals and the Gulf of Maine, some shrimps of the genus Leptochela have been taken in plankton tows. These Pasiphaeidae have not been recorded in the North Atlantic before. In the Gulf Stream current, their range increases offshore and northwards. A described postlarval stage shows that adult structures are developed late.

Les peuplements benthiques du plateau insulaire de la Martinique et des zones bathyales adjacentes. Cas particulier de la malacofaune ArchiMer
Paulmier, Gerard; Durand, Francoise.
Several oceanographic surveys in Martinique waters with, as main objectives, either geological mapping and evaluating marine aggregate resources of research into deep water carcinologie resources, nafe produced interesting informtion on benthic pppulations situated from the infralittoral to the bathyal shelf, for the wole of faunistic groups and more specifically for the malacofauna. The distribution of the various faunistic group has been analysed in function to the bathymetric, edaphic and possibly, thermic factors. The infralittoral zones, up to the 20 metres isobath, and circalittoral, between 60  and 80 metres, are known to have the richest populations. Corals, sponges, polychaete annelida and molluscs are the best represented, numerically as well as...

Vibrio nigripulchritudo monitoring and strain dynamics in shrimp pond sediments ArchiMer
Walling, Emilie; Vourey, Elodie; Ansquer, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit; Goarant, C..
Aims: A description of bacterial pathogens in shrimp ponds is necessary to understand their pathogenesis. Vibrio nigripulchritudo was shown to contain saprophytic and pathogenic strains among New Caledonian isolates. We established a method to map the development of V. nigripulchritudo in pond sediments at three different genetic levels: the species level, then at the pathogenic cluster level and finally at the plasmid level, present only in all highly pathogenic isolates. Methods and Results: PCR methods were applied to shrimp pond sediments both before and after a mortality outbreak. Using crude samples, the species V. nigripulchritudo is not detected at first (0/42 samples at day 56 post stocking) but appears frequently in the sediments after the...

Etude ecologique des vibrions du bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel.
Water and sediment samples monthly collected from Arcachon Bay (Gironde, France) were examined during three years for the presence of marine vibrios. V. cholerae serotype 01 was never detected. On the other hand, the Eyre River and mouth contain non-agglutinating V. cholerae (127 strains) principally in water. The low temperatures slow their development down without stopping it completely. V. parahaemolyticus (257 strains) present in the same areas is particularly isolated from water when the aquatic medium temperature rises to 15 degree C. V. alginolyticus (638 strains) settles the whole Bay, except the river, in any season. The low temperatures promote growth of V. metschnikovii (203 strains) very tolerant towards salinity. V. anguillarum (46 strains)...

Utilisation des submersibles en biologie et en ecologie abyssale ArchiMer
Alayse, Anne-marie.
With the advent of deep submergence research vessels (DSRVs) biological and ecological studies of ocean deeps have made great strides. Especially these submersibles allowed to conduct physiological and biochemical experiments on benthic fauna directly on the bottom or on board with alive retrieved animals. A second great interest is the possibility to work in chaotic areas and on microenvironments. Without DSRVs most of measurements and observations obtained on hydrothermals vents would had been impossible. We will present the different equipment designed for the two French DSRVs used during the cruises conducted by the Departement "Environnement Profond" de l'IFREMER to study hydrothermal and "normal" deep-sea ecosystems. We will discuss the new devices...

Description, distribution and microhabitats of a new species of Tisbe (Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Tisbidae) from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (37 degrees N, Lucky Strike) ArchiMer
Ivanenko, Viatcheslav; Ferrari, Frank D.; Defaye, Danielle; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
A new species, Tisbe dahmsi sp. nov. (Crustacea, Copepoda: Harpacticoida: Tisbidae) is described from the Eiffel Tower edifice located in the Lucky Strike vent field (37 degrees N) (Mid-Atlantic Ridge MAR, 1698 m). The samples were collected in colonization experiments (SMAC arrays) that were deployed in 1997 during the MARVEL cruise and recovered in 1998 during the PICO cruise. Other specimens were collected during the MoMARETO cruise during which a physico-chemical characterization of copepod microhabitats was done. The new species belongs to the T. gracilis group based on similarities of the spine-like inner seta on the proximal endopodal segment of the male second swimming leg, which is terminally bifurcate. Re-examination of the closest relative and...

Etude bibliographique de quelques espèces planctoniques et benthiques littorales de la Manche - Volume 1 - Espèces phytoplanctoniques ArchiMer
Erard-le Denn, Evelyne; Populus, Jacques.
This catalogue deals mainly with common phytoplanktonic species found in the Channel. It is part of a bibliographical survey on pelagos and benthos. The main idea was to gather the largest possible amount of data on the eco-physiology of each species. To do so, studies were conducted in the main marine region where the species had been found and analysed. We focused on several reference ecological studies conducted in the coastal Channel, on the E.D.F. sites, by the C.N.E.X.O., the I.S.T.P.M. and some university laboratories. A great attention was also paid to the studies on seasonal cycles carried out in laboratories in Plymouth, Helgoland and in the Irish zones. (unverified OCR)

Seasonal succession of cyanoprokaryotes in a hypereutrophic oligo-mesohaline lagoon from the South of France ArchiMer
Chomerat, Nicolas; Garnier, Robert; Bertrand, Céline; Cazaubon, Arlette.
The Bolmon lagoon (South of France) is an oligo-mesohaline coastal lagoon that has undergone intense eutrophication in the past decades, resulting from a strong concentration of human activities in its drainage basin. Consequently, it exhibits some characteristics typical of an advanced trophic state; namely, the disappearance of submerged vegetation, the permanently intense phytoplankton growth and the recurrence of cyanoprokaryote blooms. As cyanoprokaryote dominance in south-temperate saline lagoons is little reported, we carried out this study in order to understand the seasonal variations in the phytoplankton composition and biomass, and to analyse the influence of environmental parameters such as salinity, nutrients and climate on the seasonal...

Establishing causal link between an infectious agent and mortalities in marine molluscan aquaculture on the example of Bonamia ostreae and Herpèsvirosis in oysters : proposal of a causal grid analysis ArchiMer
Thebault, Anne; Cochennec, Nathalie; Arzul, Isabelle; Renault, Tristan.
In marine molluscan aqauculture, infectious agents are regularly cited in literature associated with mass mortalities as emergin diseases, but the causal link is often based on very few argumeents. 24 ways to demonstrate causal links from epidemiolgical, ecological and marine pathology literature feasible for marine molluscs are given. Those criteria were applied to the ewample of Bonamia ostreae for Ostrea edulis and Herpesvirus for spats and larvae of Crassostrea gigas. Three principles could be applied in marine field for choosing criteria wich should be taken in priority : the demonstration must be given at three levels of organization, organ individual, population, the demonstration must keeps maximum epidemiological criterias, and then mixes...

Spatial management of inshore areas: Theory and practice ArchiMer
Claudet, Joachim; Roussel, S; Pelletier, Dominique; Rey Valette, Hélène.
Coastal uses have deeply evolved these last decades and high anthropogenic pressures on coastal ecosystems have affected the sustainability of these areas with respect to the services and the resources they may provide. Traditional fisheries management has failed to avoid overexploitation of most coastal marine resources. Management measures based on an Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) are thus required. Spatial management covers various ranges of properties that may enhance usual regulatory means. If spatial considerations are explicitly integrated in fisheries management, the latter may contribute to zoning design in order to balance the economic, social and biological values of natural marine resources. While traditional fisheries management...

Distributions of Indo-Pacific lionfishes Pterois spp. in their native ranges: implications for the Atlantic invasion ArchiMer

Lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) have become a major concern in the western Attantie and Caribbean since their introduction in the 1980s. Invasive lionfish can reach very high population densities on coral reefs in their invaded range, yet there are few data from their native range in the Indo-Pacific for comparison. We compiled data on the geographical distribution and density of Indo-Pacific lionfishes in their native ranges from published and unpublished underwater visual censuses and field collections. We found that lionfish in their native Indo-Pacific range are unevenly distributed, with higher densities in the Indian Ocean than in the Pacific. Lionfish densities increase significantly with increasing latitude, and are significantly higher in...

Relationship of morphometrics, total carotenoids, and total lipids with activity and sexual and spatial features in Euphausia superba ArchiMer
Färber Lorda, Jaime; Ceccaldi, Hubert J..
Morphological differences associated with sex or stage, together with total lipids and carotenoids, were studied in Euphausia superba as possible indicators of physiological condition. E. superba displays sexual dimorphism during growth. A group of mature males, called Males II herein, has a greater abdominal length, suggesting that they are faster swimmers, a feature implying higher metabolic rates and a higher demand for protecting pigments like carotenoids. Mature Males II have proportionally lower lipids but higher total lipid-soluble carotenoids, a counterintuitive finding. Males II also have bigger eyes. Significant regressions with carotenoids were found for wet weight, abdominal length, and eye diameter. On a spatial analysis, population...

Currents and topography drive assemblage distribution on an active hydrothermal edifice ArchiMer
Girard, Fanny; Sarrazin, Jozee; Arnaubec, Aurelien; Cannat, Mathilde; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Wheeler, Benjamin; Matabos, Marjolaine.
The deep sea is characterized by a wide range of landscapes, including complex features where topography and currents interact to form highly heterogeneous habitats. In addition to a complex topography, hydrothermal vent environments are characterized by strong environmental gradients that structure the spatial distribution of biological communities. The role of vent fluid temperature and chemical composition on species distribution is now well understood, but investigations on the effects of the complex sulfide edifice topography are scarce. Here, we used a novel approach combining 3D photogrammetric reconstruction, in situ environmental measurements and modeling to characterize assemblage distribution on the active edifice Eiffel Tower (Lucky Strike,...

Population ecology and shell chemistry of a phytal ostracode species (Loxoconcha matagordensis) in the Chesapeake Bay watershed ArchiMer
Vann, Cd; Cronin, Tm; Dwyer, Gs.
Population ecology and shell chemistry were studied in the phytal ostracode Loxoconcha matagordensis (Swain 1955) collected from Zostera marina seagrass beds in the Chesapeake Bay to provide seasonal constraints on shell secretion time for paleothermometry. Population density and age structure were defined by two main breeding cycles that occurred between 01 to 15 June and 02 to 16 August 2001. The time interval between breeding cycles was similar to2 months and total juvenile standing crop increased almost three-fold between the first and second breeding cycles. Dark brown over-wintered adults comprised the majority of the population between March and April 2001, while newly secreted translucent adults were predominant between June and September. Seasonal...

Review of the biology, ecology and fisheries of Palinurus spp. species of European waters: Palinurus elephas (Fabricius, 1787) and Palinurus mauritanicus (Gruvel, 1911) ArchiMer
Gõni, R; Latrouite, Daniel.
Palinurus elephas and Palinurus mauritanicus are the only species of the family Palinuridae that occur in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. Of the two, Palinurus elephas is the most abundant and accessible and has traditionally been the preferred target of lobster fisheries throughout its range. Palinurus mauritanicus has a deeper distribution and has been an important target of fisheries mainly in the Central Eastern Atlantic. The high unit value and the relative scarcity of these species have been important obstacles to research and knowledge of their biology, ecology and fisheries is limited. Nevertheless, over time a considerable number of studies has been conducted, though most of these are contained in university theses or in publications of...

Larval rearings were performed with seawater either freshly pumped or after storage in a pond. Concerning bacterial populations these waters were characterized by a high diversity, little sized bacteria whose few of them (1%) were cultivable on Zobell medium. In the tanks, the bacterial ecosystem was modified by the presence of antibiotics, larvae and algae: the diversity was lowered, the cellular volume was increased by a factor 2 to 5, 100% bacteria were cultivable and chloramphenicol resistant, and their metabolism changed. Taxonomic screening showed no differences among the two waters neither at the beginning nor at the end of the rearings. However, depending on the water (stored or not) differences were identified for bacterial physiology and...
