Distribution of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes in seropositive patients in the state of Alagoas, Brazil BJM
Gonzaga,Rosa Maria S.; Rodart,Itatiana F.; Reis,Mitermayer Galvão; Ramalho Neto,Cícero Eduardo; Silva,Denise Wanderlei.
We determined the frequency of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes in anti-HCV seropositive patients in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, by means of nested-reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-nested-PCR) followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of amplified fragments of the 5´NCR. The nested-PCR with genotype-specific primers from the core region was carried out when detection was not possible by the first approach. Detectable HCV-RNA was present in 115 (74.7%) of 154 serum samples. Genotype 1 was the most frequent (77.4%), against 20.9% of genotype 3 and 0.8% of genotype 2. Subtype 1b was predominant (65.2%), followed by subtypes 1a (8.7%), and 3a (6.1%). Coinfection (1a/3a) was detected in 0.8% of the samples. Indeed, there...

Hospital-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus carrying the PVL gene outbreak in a Public Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJM
Brust,Társis; Costa,Thaina Miranda da; Amorim,José Carlos; Asensi,Marise Dutra; Fernandes,Octavio; Aguiar-Alves,Fábio.
Hospital associated methicillin-resist Staphylococcus aureus has long been associated to outbreaks in the hospital environment. In this work, we investigated an outbreak of Hospital associated methicillin-resist Staphylococcus aureus carrying the Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene, which occurred in a large community hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Viral Hepatitis C in a leading Brazilian hospital: epidemiological factors and genotyping BJM
Bezerra,Cristianne S.; Lima,José M.C.; Vilar,Janaina L.; Moreira,José L.B.; Frota,Cristiane C..
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is classified into six different genotypes and their distribution is different throughout the world. Epidemiologic studies are important to determine several characteristics of the virus, as well as the disease. This study analysed the prevalence of HCV and its genotypes among patients from a leading hospital in Ceará, which is located in Northeast Brazil. A total of 119 anti-HCV-seropositive patients, each having previously completed a questionnaire about risk behaviours related to HCV infection were tested for HCV infection using a qualitative HCV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and genotyping by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The detection was based on amplifying of the non-coding 5' region. Of the 119...

Differentiation of Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) genotypes by a restriction enzyme assay BJM
Souza,Sibele Pinheiro de; Asano,Karen Miyuki; Sandri,Thaisa Lucas; Barros,Iracema Nunes de; Richtzenhain,Leonardo José; Brandão,Paulo Eduardo.
This article reports the use of the GsuI restriction enzyme to differentiate genotypes of Bovine Coronavirus (BCoV), based on an 18-nucleotide deletion of S1-coding region found in one of the two genotypes. It was concluded that this assay can be used as a rapid tool for BCoV genotypes differentiation.

Morphological analysis and photosynthetic performance of improved papaya genotypes Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Torres Netto,Alena; Campostrini,Eliemar; Azevedo,Letícia C.; Souza,Marcelo A.; Ramalho,José C.; Chaves,Manuela M..
Brazil is the largest world producer of papaya and the third largest exporter despite of only 1.5 to 2.0% of its production is exported. Such an underexplored exportation potential highlight the necessity for physiological studies on new cultivars and hybrids to verify their agronomic and commercial viability. Two Brazilian states, Bahia and Espirito Santo, are responsible for 80% of national production. Papaya can also be an agricultural alternative to north / northeast of Rio de Janeiro, because the region is close to consumer centers and have similar environmental conditions of the most productive regions. Nevertheless, it is worth to develop cultivars that can express the highest yield potential in this region. The aim of this work was to characterize...

The influence of N and P supply and genotype on N remobilization in containerized Pinus radiata plants Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Bown,Horacio E; Watt,Michael S; Clinton,Peter W; Mason,Euan G.
A large proportion of the nitrogen (N) used in the current-year growth of the widely grown plantation species Pinus radiata D. Don is N that was stored in plant tissues the previous year. However, the extent to which an imbalance between levels of phosphorus (P) and N may change the capacity of plants to remobilize N is unknown. In this study, the N remobilization responses of four P. radiata genotypes to a factorial combination of N and P additions were assessed in containerized plants in a two-year greenhouse experiment. N supply was enriched with 15N at 2.5%o(labeled N) during the first year. Plants were then transferred to clean sand and grown for another year with 15N at levels close to natural levels (0.3664899 atom percent 15N, δ15N...

Use efficiency and responsivity to nitrogen of common bean cultivars Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Leal,Fábio Tiraboschi; Filla,Vinícius Augusto; Bettiol,João Victor Trombeta; Sandrini,Fernando de Oliveira Turci; Mingotte,Fábio Luíz Checchio; Lemos,Leandro Borges.
ABSTRACT Common beans are the main source of protein in underdeveloped countries, and nitrogen (N) is one of the nutrients the most limits the productivity of this crop. This study, under field conditions, aimed to: a) determinate through efficiency indices how N is used by 16 cultivars of common beans; and b) classify these cultivars regarding use efficiency and responsivity to N application. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in split-plot scheme, with four replicates. Main plots consisted of 16 cultivars of common beans commercially classified as ‘Carioca type’. Subplots comprised two rates of N: 20 and 120 kg ha-1 applied as top-dressing. The evaluations were number of pods per plant and grains per pod, hundred-grain weight, shoots dry...

Resistance of tomato strains to the moth Tuta absoluta imparted by allelochemicals and trichome density Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Oliveira,Celso Mattes de; Andrade Júnior,Valter Carvalho de; Maluf,Wilson Roberto; Neiva,Irã Pinheiro; Maciel,Gabriel Mascarenhas.
We examined the resistance of improved tomato strains rich in 2-tridecanone (2-TD), zingiberene (ZGB) and acyl sugars (AA) to the tomato moth, Tuta absoluta. We also studied whether selection for strains with higher densities of glandular trichomes, and thus presumably strains with higher concentrations of 2-tridecanone, was effective in promoting greater resistance to the moth. The TOM-584 and TOM-679 strains were used as susceptible controls, which have normal concentrations of the three allelochemicals. The improved strain TOM-687, which has a high AA content, has a widely documented resistance and was used as a standard resistant strain. The wild strain PI134417, which is resistant by means of its high 2-TD content, was also used as a standard...
