Suspended matter and nutrient gradients of a small-scale river plume in Sepetiba Bay, SE-Brazil BABT
Rodrigues,Raphael Paiva; Knoppers,Bastiaan Adriaan; Souza,Weber Friederichs Landim de; Santos,Elisamara Sabadini.
Coastal river plumes represent one of the final stages of material transport across the land-sea interface. Most studies, however have focused on the behavior of medium to large sized river plumes of coastal-shelf waters, whereas small sized river plumes acting within estuaries have been neglected. This study addressed the behavior of suspended particulate matter (SPM), dissolved inorganic nutrients (DIN, DIP and DSi) and Chlorophyll a (Chl. a) of a small sized river plume derived from the closely lain São Francisco and Guandú river channels, set in the Sepetiba Bay estuary, SE-Brazil. Two surface water sampling campaigns were conducted, one in January 2003 (humid summer conditions) and the other in June 2003 (dry winter conditions). On both occasions, the...

Impact of the Icaraí Sewage Outfall in Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Marques Júnior,Aguinaldo Nepomuceno; Crapez,Mirian Araujo Carlos; Barboza,Conceição Denise Nunes.
The present study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Icaraí Sewage Outfall (ISEO) area. Sampling was conducted during winter and summer, and water samples were analyzed for dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrients (DIN), seston, particulate organic matter (POM), and pigments. Results showed that the water chemistry of the area suffers temporal and spatial variation. Great variability was also seen in the C:N:P ratios of POM (August, 112:30:1; December, 59:11:1) and in the DIN concentrations. Chlorophyll-a and ammonium concentrations (4.5 µg L-1 - 71.2 µg L-1, and 0.20 µM - 52,6 µM, respectively) characterized the ISEO area as eutrophic. The dispersal of the material was not effective under certain oceanographic...

Effects of light and nutrients on different germination phases of the Cosmopolitan moss Bryum argenteum Hedw. (Bryaceae) BABT
Silva,Adaíses Simone Maciel da; Pôrto,Kátia Cavalcanti; Simabukuro,Eliana Akie.
The influence of light and nutrients on the different germination phases of Bryum argenteum spores was studied. The following treatments were used: distilled water and nutrient solution under light (12 h) and continuous darkness. The spores germinated when exposed to light, independent of both medium used. Under darkness, the spores swelled and became chlorophyllous. In the presence of nutrient solution, the germination occurred earlier (after two days) when compared to the distilled water (after more than three days). Nutrients were needed to complete the last germination phase in the majority of spores and to provide the protonemal growth.

Influence of effluents from a Wastewater Treatment Plant on nutrient distribution in a coastal creek from southern Brazil BABT
Santos,Isaac Rodrigues; Costa,Ronaldo Cataldo; Freitas,Ubiratan; Fillmann,Gilberto.
The hypothesis that effluents treated through activated sludge process cause changes in nutrient biogeochemistry of receiving water bodies was investigated in Vieira creek, southern Brazil. Dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, and pH did not vary among the sampling stations. Nutrient, biochemical oxygen demand, and conductivity values were significantly higher downstream from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents. Further downstream, nitrate concentrations were higher due to ammonium nitrification, organic matter remineralization and/or the occurrence of unidentified sources. Per capita nutrient emission factors were estimated to be 0.16 kg P.yr-1 and 4.14 kg N.yr-1. Under pristine conditions, low N:P ratios were observed, which were significantly...

IV.Heat stress in Triticum: kinetics of Fe and Mn accumulation Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dias,Ana S.; Lidon,Fernando C.; Ramalho,José C..
The interactions between Fe/Mn accumulation and the photosynthetic light reactions were investigated in heat stressed bread and durum wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L. and Triticum turgidum subsp.durum). Four genotypes were chosen according to its genetic background diversity. Plants were grown in a greenhouse at two different day/night temperatures regimes (control - 25/14ºC and heat stress - 31/20ºC), during the grain filling phase. The contents and uptake/translocation of Fe and Mn were evaluated on booting, grain filling and maturity and correlated with chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. It was found that, under heat stress, the concentrations of Fe in the culm and leaves diminished in bread wheat, but increased in durum wheat. An opposite...

Evaluation of On-Farm Quick Tests on Slurries from Southern Chile Dairy Farms Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Salazar S,Francisco; Rosas U,Marianela.
Currently in Chile, there is a lack of tools to determine the real-time nutrient contribution of slurries. This study aims to evaluate three quick tests for their accuracy in estimating the total contents of N (TN), P (TP), K (TK), and ammonium-N (N-NH4+) in dairy slurries. The quick tests included the Agros Nova Meter, Quantofix N Volumeter, and a hydrometer. While the Agros and Quantofix meters directly measure the ammonium-N content; the hydrometer indirectly estimates the total content of N, P, and K based on linear relationships with the slurry DM. Samples (73) were collected from dairy farms along Southern Chile (39° to 44° S and 71 to 73° W). Analyses were carried out on laboratory conditions using conventional techniques as well as using each of...
