Temperature and photoperiod drive Crassostrea gigas reproductive internal clock ArchiMer
Fabioux, Caroline; Huvet, Arnaud; Le Souchu, Pierrick; Le Pennec, Marcel; Pouvreau, Stephane.
This study examined the gametogenic cycle of Crassostrea gigas in controlled conditions over one year, with a focus on the initiation of gametogenesis. This work analysed also the role of temperature and photoperiod in the regulation of oyster reproduction. Broodstock were maintained in natural (NC), accelerated (AC) and perpetual winter (WC) conditions of temperature and photoperiod, with feeding ad libitum. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the reproductive pattern were performed using biometric measurement approach, sex ratio determination, histology and a gonad filling index. Each experimental treatment led to different strategies for growth and resource allocation. The gametogenic cycle, appeared entirely modulated, accelerated or delayed, by...

Latrouite, Daniel; Noel, Philippe.
From the end of XIX century to the 1950', spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) fishing has been an important economical activity for potters of Brittany and led to landings over two thousands tons. Later, impoverishment of traditional fishing grounds and closure, to French fleet, of foreign fishing area obliged a reconversion of potters toward crabs (edible crab and spider crab). Recently in the 80', development of a netting activity has restarted catches of spiny lobster (at a modest scale). Presently, the only reglementary measure concerning this species/metier is a national minimum legal size (total length) but European Commission has wished that a European MLS would be established. In that aim, this paper presents the main features of spiny lobster...

The Paracentrotus lividus populations from the northern Moroccan Atlantic coast: growth, reproduction and health condition ArchiMer
Bayed, Abdellatif; Quiniou, Francoise; Benrha, Ali; Guillou, Monique.
The condition of three intertidal Paracentrotus lividus populations, which inhabit an area between Rabat and Casablanca (Morocco) known by its high wave energy and its substantial anthropogenic disturbances were described. The growth rate of the juvenile sea urchins in this intertidal zone was low compared with more sheltered populations. A sharp increase in the gonad index was observed between January and March at the beginning of a period of algal production, and was concomitant with increases in seawater temperature and food consumption rate. This gonad index increase was followed by a single spawning period occurring between March and June, probably triggered by the phytoplankton bloom induced by upwelling conditions. Larval development in all three...

A research programm on the marine green turtle Chelonia mydas nesting on the two major reproduction sites for the species in the Indian Ocean, conducled over last 15 years, included intensive tagging programm. Processing of these lagging data provides estimations of adult female populations {or each site and season from two independent methods. First classical method is the ratio of total number of nests produced over a define time on the mean individual number of nests by female during the same time (November, December, January). The computed mean individual number ranges from 3 to 3.5 obtained over 2 to 3 months. The second method is the multiple capture-recapture method (JOLLY, 1965; SEBER, 1965; MANLY, 1984). Il is an original tentative of applying...

Fauvel, Christian.
During this visit, research work on the physiology and zootechny of reproduction of different US teams were compared to ours. It is clear that we have the same problems to solve and that research programs are rather similar, but they must take into account the local conditions. This fact limits the possibilities of cooperation. Nevertheless a very good knowledge of each work has been noted.

His, Edouard; Borel, Michel; Robert, Rene; Laborde, Jean-louis.

His, Edouard.

Goulletquer, Philippe.
Since its introduction to French coasts in the 1970s, Crassostrea gigas completes its reproductive cycle—i.e. regular annual recruitment and establishment of natural populations—in only two sectors (Charentes coast and Arcachon Bay). In other areas of Pacific oyster production (Normandy, Brittany, Vendée, Mediterranean), complete gametogenesis may occur, resulting in spawning events and even recruitment in favourable temperatures. Temperature seems to be the main limiting factor for in situ reproduction. Growth and reproduction occur simultaneously. The study of the reproductive cycle of one-year old oysters showed that gametogenesis was asynchronous with high interannual variability and growth appeared to take precedence over reproduction. On the...

Growth and gonad development of the tropical black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (L.), in the Gambier archipelago (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Tiapari, Jerome; Teissier, Hinano; Martinez, Elodie; Cochard, Jean-claude.
The growth and reproductive cycle of cultured black-lipped pearl oysters, Pinctada margaritifera (L.), were studied in the Gambier Islands (134°52' W, 23°07' S) from September 2002 to August 2003. Temperatures were recorded throughout the year, revealing seasonal temperature variations between 22.3 °C and 27.8 °C. The mean annual chlorophyll a value, as computed from satellite data, was 0.188 ± 0.075 µg L-1. To study growth and reproduction, 720 two-year-old individuals were ear hung on longlines suspended at a depth of 7 m. Samples were taken twice a month to obtain the following measurements: shell height; wet weight of flesh and total oyster; dry weight of adductor muscle, mantle and visceral mass; and glycogen content. Gonad development was also...

Effect of genistein-enriched diets on the endocrine process of gametogenesis and on reproduction efficiency of the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ArchiMer
Bennetau Pelissero, Catherine; Breton, Bernard; Bennetau, Bernard; Corraze, Genevieve; Le Menn, Françoise; Davail Cuisset, Blandine; Helou, Chantal; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
Three practical diets were formulated to contain 0, 500, or 1000 ppm genistein. The three diets were distributed for 1 year to groups of rainbow trout undergoing their first gametogenesis and until spawning. Growth performance of rainbow trout was not affected by dietary treatments. Plasma cholesterol levels were equivalent between groups. In males, a slight but constant induction of vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis and a decrease in testosterone levels were observed. A slight decrease in plasma levels of beta FSH and beta LH was noticed at the end of spermatogenesis in the male fish fed a diet with 500 ppm (genistein) (from 2.16 +/- 0.39 to 1.47 +/- 0.23 for beta FSH and from 0.44 +/- 0.09 to 0.31 +/- 0.09 for beta LH).
Hamida, Leila; Medhiouband, Mohamed; Cochard, Jean-claude; Romdhane, Mohamed; Le Pennec, Marcel.
A comparative study of the reproductive cycle of Ruditapes decussatus under natural (South of Tunisia) and controlled conditions (hatchery). The aim of this study was to describe and compare the gametogenic activity of Ruditapes decussatus in situ and in hatchery. Criteria of maturity were characterized and the positive role of conditioning in the success of artificial reproduction was underlined. Specimens sampled in the South of Tunisia were conditioned at the experimental station of Monastir (Tunisia). The parameters studied were the variation of the condition index and the frequency distribution of oocyte diameters. Results showed that the reproductive cycle was continuous in situ. Gametogenesis started in January and February. Gonadic activity...

The response of Argopecten purpuratus (Peruvian scallop) to environmental conditions was studied in the upwelling-influenced Bay of Paracas (Peru). Scallops growth and reproduction were monitored weekly over a 7-month period under two conditions (culture depths): on the bottom and 2 m above (suspended culture). At the same time, a high-frequency environmental monitoring was realized at the aforementioned depths. The results indicate that environmental conditions in the Bay are highly variable, especially during the summer: temperature fluctuations up to 8∘C were recorded in less than one day while oxic conditions ranged from oversaturation to anoxia. Milky-turquoise waters discoloration events (sulphide presence suspected) were simultaneously observed...

Reproductive dynamics of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Reunion Island). Part 2: fecundity and spawning pattern ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Fauvel, Christian.
Batch fecundity and relative fecundity of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the southwestern Indian Ocean were estimated from seven gravid swordfish females (size range 127-225 cm lower jaw-to-fork length, LJFL) with unovulated, hydrated oocytes collected onboard Reunion-based (France) longline swordfish fishing vessels between December 1999 to January 2001. To investigate the spawning pattern of swordfish, we used data collected through a combination of two at sea sampling regimes. A total of 17 007 geo-located size data of swordfish were recorded during 8 years (1993-2001) and a total of 1727 (size range 75-289 cm, LJFL) swordfish gonads (1107 females and 620 males) were sampled from May 1998 to January 2001. The estimated batch fecundity ranged from 995...

Latitudinal influence on gametogenesis and host–parasite ecology in a marine bivalve model ArchiMer
Mahony, Kate E.; Lynch, Sharon A.; Egerton, Sian; Laffan, Rebecca E.; Correia, Simão; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Mesmer‐dudons, Nathalie; Freitas, Rosa; Culloty, Sarah C..
Reproduction and parasites have significant impacts on marine animal populations globally. This study aimed to investigate the associative effects of host reproduction and a host–parasite interplay on a marine bivalve, along a geographic gradient of latitude. Cockles Cerastoderma edule were sampled from five European sites (54°N to 40°N), between April 2018 and October 2019. A histological survey provided data on trematode (metacercaria and sporocyst life stages), prevalence, and cockle stage of gametogenesis to assess the influence of a latitudinal gradient on both interplays. Sex ratios at the northernmost sites were skewed toward females, and spawning size was reduced at the lower latitudes. Trematode infection did not follow a latitudinal gradient....

ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick.
The Marennes-Oléron Bay on the Atlantic coast is a major oyster culture centre in France. 40 000 tonnes of cupped oysters are produced there each year. The two taxa C. angulata and C. gigas have been cultured in turn over the last century. Since 1950, larvae have been captured between June and September in the southern part of the Bay, near the mouth of the Seudre River, the traditional oyster spat capture zone. This historical database shows that the frequency of larvae capture is defined by three to four peaks in larvae emission in C. angulata and only two peaks for C. gigas during a single season. Seventeen years of data on C. angulata between 1950 and 1969 and 27 years for C. gigas between 1972 and 2000 demonstrate that the beginning of the spawning...

Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Grouhel, Stephanie; Cantin, Christian; Grizon, James; Seugnet, Jean-luc.
The monitoring of spat ploidy collected in the two main collection basins-Marennes Oléron and Arcachon-was realised through flow cytometry. Natural spat samples were collected on 3 sites in each basin and a total of 1 002 animals were analysed. Based on our samples, the results concluded that no polyploid, triploid or tetraploid animals were collected in the two investigated basins. These results comply with our provisions and do not bring any reason for a change in the practices used in triploid oyster culture. However, complementary studies on triploid residual gametogenesis, the nature of their gametes and that of their offsprings will have to be continued in order to fine-tune the estimates of the parameters on which the modeling scenarii of the...
