Active Immunization Against 5α-androstane-3α, 17β-diol Increases Ovulation Rate in Merino Ewes OAK
TETSUKA, Masafumi; NANCARROW, Colin. D.; 手塚, 雅文.
Cyclic Merino ewes were immunized three times against 5α−androstane-3α,17β-diol (3α-diol) at three week intervals (weeks 0,3 and 6). After the third immunization, estrous cycles were synchronized by a series of PG injections and intensive blood samples were obtained for gonadotropin analyses during the mid-luteal phase and during the early follicular phase. Ovulation rates were determined after each immunization and subsequent cloprostenol (PG)-induced luteolysis (weeks 3, 6, 8 and 11). After the second immunization, daily blood samples were obtained and concentrations of plasma progesterone (P) were measured. Immunization against 3α-diol significantly increased the ovulation rate after the second and third immunizations and at week 10 (P<0.01,...

Ovine theileriosis is a tick-borne disease that restricts the development of small ruminant husbandry in northern China. In this study, we report on a molecular epidemiological survey of ovine Theileria spp. in 198 blood samples taken from sheep in northern China. The DNA samples were screened by a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the 18S rRNA gene of ovine Theileria spp. The prevalence of ovine Theileria spp. in Yanji, Nongan, Longjing, Toudao and Jinchang was 80%, 40%, 37%, 24% and 32%, respectively. The sequencing analyses approved the present of the T. orientalis and/or T. luwenshuni in these regions. Taken together, we have demonstrated a high incidence of Theileria spp. in northern China that calls for the need to design effective...

Determination of serum isometamidium levels in sheep and goats under field conditions using isometamidium-ELISA OAK
Wesongah, J. O.; Murilla, G. A.; Kibugu, J. K.; Jones, T. W..
Twenty eight sheep and 28 goats were treated with isometamidium chloride (Samorin®, hone Merieux, Lyon, France) at a dose of 1 mg/kg body weight (bw) by intramuscular injection. All the animals were grazed in a tsetse-infested area. They were monitored for anaemia, body weight, anti-trypanosome antibodies and serum isometamidium concentration using the isometamidium enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for more than 80 days after treatment. Serum isometamidium levels were higher in goats than in sheep throughout the experimental period. Isometamidium was still detectable in sheep and goats for up to 77 and 98 days, respectively, alter treatment (detection limit=0.1 ng/ml). The isometamidium elimination half-lives in sheep and goats were approximately...

In this study, two successive field trials were conducted during the non-breeding season to investigate various factors affecting on fertility of Suffolk ewes after intrauterine insemination with frozen-thawed semen. In the first year (Experiment 1), three sperm numbers per insemination dose (0.25, 0.5 and 1 million sperm) and five sheep farms were used, and in the second year (Experiment 2), parity, age, body weight, body condition score (BCS) and postpartum days were investigated to compare pregnancy and lambing rates. High pregnancy and lambing rates (70.6 and 70.6%, respectively) were obtained with 0.25 million sperm per dose. There were no significant differences in the pregnancy and lambing rates among the five farms, but there was a tendency for one...

Serodiagnosis of ovine toxoplasmosis in Mongolia by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with recombinant Toxoplasma gondii matrix antigen 1 OAK
Tumurjav, Buyannemekh; Terkawi, Mohamad Alaa; Zhang, Houshuang; Zhang, Guohong; Jia, Honglin; Goo, Youn-Kyoung; Yamagishi, Junya; Nishikawa, Yoshifumi; Igarashi, Ikuo; Sugimoto, Chihiro; Xuan, Xuenan.
Toxoplasma gondii matrix antigen 1 (TgMAG1), known as the 65-kDa protein, which is abundantly expressed in both bradyzoites and tachyzoites, was evaluated as a candidate for the development of a diagnostic reagent for ovine toxoplasmosis. The TgMAG1 gene was expressed in Escherichia coli as a fusion protein with glutathione S-transferase (GST),and the recombinant TgMAG1 (rTgMAG1) was tested in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The ELISA with rTgMAG1 showed a highly specific reaction with sera from mice experimentally infected with T. gondii but not with the closely related Neospora caninum. The antibodies to TgMAG1 were detectable from the acute to the chronic infectious stages in a mouse model. A total of 175 serum samples collected from sheep...

The value of refugia in managing anthelmintic resistance: a modelling approach AgEcon
Pech, Caris L.; Doole, Graeme J.; Pluske, Johanna M..
The increasing prevalence of anthelmintic (drench) resistance in gastrointestinal parasite populations is decreasing the profitability of the sheep industry in Western Australia (WA). A strategy, referred to as refugia management, has the potential to delay the development of resistant parasites by not exposing a proportion of the worm population to chemical control. A dynamic bioeconomic model is used to assess the economic value of refugia for management of the worm species Teladorsagia circumcincta and Macrocyclic Lactone drenches in Western Australian sheep flocks. A low rate of refugia (2 per cent) is most profitable under standard circumstances because it slows the development of resistance, but also reduces the cost accruing to production losses...

A financial analysis of the effect of the mix of crop and sheep enterprises on the risk profile of dryland farms in south-eastern Australia – Part 1 AgEcon
Hutchings, Timothy R..
This study presents a method of simulating longer-term cash flows that reflect the cumulative effects of variation in seasons, prices, enterprise sequences and mixes and other management decisions. It can be used to develop full risk profiles on a whole-farm or individual-component enterprise basis for most dryland farms in southern Australia, at gross margin, profit or cash flow levels. This analysis concentrates on the cash flow implications of these various scenarios because cash flow is the indicator which includes all costs, and therefore demonstrates affordability and the long-term viability of the farm business entity. This study shows that the role of sheep in the mixed farming enterprise in south-eastern Australia is to reduce the exposure of the...

Labour Management for Profit and Welfare in Extensive Sheep Farming AgEcon
Kirwan, Susanne; Thomson, Kenneth J.; Edwards, Ian E.; Stott, Alistair W..
Sheep welfare is an emerging topic in research and food marketing, and recent studies suggest that farm labour is a key factor for both animal welfare and productivity in extensive sheep farming systems, although little research has been done into labour utilisation in these systems. This paper reports field data collection on two commercial farms and the use of a linear programming (LP) model to link labour economics and animal welfare analysis. The model maximises the number of ewes to clooked after over the lambing period, when constrained by labour availability for various key tasks and by a pre-determined level of sheep welfare. The results show a trade-off between welfare level and labour input per sheep. Dropping tasks with less significant welfare...

A magyarországi szarvasmarha- és juhágazat középtávú kilátásai AgEcon
Voneki, Eva; Papp, Gergely.
Az állattenyésztési ágazatok kilátásai nem biztatóak a tartósan magas takarmányárak, a vertikálisan kevésbé szervezett, a termékpálya szakaszai közötti laza kapcsolat miatt, ami a legfontosabb felvevőpiacok szervezetlenségére is visszavezethető. A magyarországi állattartók érdemben nem képesek befolyásolni sem a világpiacon, sem az Európai Unió piacán zajló folyamatokat, így kénytelenek a réspiacokat kitöltve alkalmazkodni. Különböző modellváltozataink szerint a szarvasmarha-állomány 680-731 ezer egyed, a tejelőtehén-állomány 266-269 ezer egyed között alakulhat 2013-ban. Továbbra is elsősorban a húshasznú egyedek számának növekedésére lehet számítani. A tejtermelés 2010-ben várhatóan kitölti a nemzeti kvótát. Tej- és tejtermék-kivitelben főként a...

The likely regional impacts of an agricultural emissions policy in New Zealand: Preliminary analysis AgEcon
Sin, Isabelle; Brunton, Emma; Hendy, Joanna; Kerr, Suzi.
Hendy and Kerr (2005b) find that an emissions charge on agricultural methane and nitrous oxide of $25 per tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent would be likely to reduce New Zealand‘s net land-use related emissions for commitment period one in the order of 3%, with full accounting. The costs per farmer and as a percentage of profit would be very high. This paper considers the regional impacts of such a policy in New Zealand by allocating the emission charge across space according to the location of animals. We then combine our emissions charge information with data on the socio-economic characteristics of the affected areas. Obviously rural areas are heavily affected. In many respects, for example median income, ethnic mix, and percentage of working...

Data from each of 5 commercial, extensive sheep farms in Cumbria, UK were used as parameters in a linear program (LP) representing labour and grazing management in such farming systems. The LP maximised ewe enterprise gross margin subject to constraints dictated by the labour availability and land types on each farm. Under the assumptions used, labour availability and price restricted ewe numbers well below those observed in practice on 2 farms i.e. land resources were adequate for the farming system practiced. On two other farms stocking levels and hence returns were limited by the availability of forage and hence feed input prices relative to output. On one farm, greater grassland productivity was the key determinant of system performance. It was...

REFERENCE OF 1996 U.S. REGIONAL SHEEP HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AgEcon
Wineland, Nora.
In 1995, the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) collaborated with the Research and Education Division of the American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) in developing a needs assessment tool to identify the most important health and productivity factors for the sheep industry. In collaboration with the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), a statistically designed producer sample was selected to provide estimates for the United States sheep population in the 48 contiguous states. The NAHMS/ASI questionnaires were mailed to 19,807 sheep operations in January 1996; data were received and summarized from 5,174 respondents. It was estimated that in the 48 contiguous states, there were approximately 8,433,400 sheep as of January...

Evidence of Scope Economies in Australian Agriculture AgEcon
Villano, Renato A.; Fleming, Pauline; Fleming, Euan M..
Scope economies can be used in studies of farming systems to provide a measure of synergies between different farm enterprises and between activities within farm enterprises. In this paper, they are reported for farms in three benchmarking groups in Australia by estimating stochastic input distance functions and calculating an 'economies of scope parameter'. Evidence of significant scope economies between sheep and crop enterprises, and between beef and crop enterprises, is presented and discussed. Similar evidence is reported between wool and lamb activities and wool and mature sheep trading activities within the sheep enterprise.

Impacts of labour on interactions between economics and animal welfare in extensive sheep farms AgEcon
Vosough Ahmadi, Bouda; Dwyer, Cathy M.; Erhard, H.W.; Morgan-Davies, Claire; Waterhouse, A.; Milne, Catherine E.; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata; Ringrose, Sian; Goddard, Pete; Phillips, Kate; Stott, Alistair W..
This study quantified interactions between animal welfare and farm profitability in British extensive sheep farming systems. Qualitative welfare assessment methodology was used to assess welfare from the animal's perspective in 20 commercial extensive sheep farms and to estimate labour demand for welfare, based on the assessed welfare scores using data collected from farm inventories. The estimated labour demand was then used as a coefficient in a linear program based model to establish the gross margin maximising farm management strategy for given farm situations, subject to constraints that reflected current resource limitations including labour supply. Regression analysis showed a significant relationship between the qualitative welfare assessment...

Seasonal labour is the most profitable use of labour in broadacre crop dominant farms AgEcon
Rose, Gus; Kingwell, Ross S..
Labour scarcity and affordability have encouraged many farmers in Western Australia to focus more on cropping than sheep production. Many farmers are opting to run low input livestock systems. This paper examines labour demand for sheep and cropping during the production year, combined with various scenarios of labour availability and cost. The implications for farm profitability and enterprise selection are examined using the bio-economic farming systems model MIDAS (Model of an Integrated Dryland Agricultural System). Labour requirements for sheep are far greater than those for cropping. Additionally the labour requirements for sheep are high in all production periods whilst the seasonal nature of cropping means more time is required only at certain...

A financial analysis of the impact of sheep on the risks and returns associated with mixed enterprise dryland farming in south-eastern Australia: Part II AgEcon
Hutchings, Timothy R..
This paper extends the long-term cash-flow simulations reported in Part I (Hutchings 2009) to include a range of seasonal scenarios at four representative dryland sites in south-eastern Australia. The effect of varying the proportion of sheep and cropping in the enterprise mix at each site on cash surpluses is discussed. The analysis shows that, for most sites, the cropping enterprises require better than average seasons, prices and water-use efficiencies to generate a positive cash flow and are subject to substantial variability and risk of loss. In contrast, the sheep enterprises show small but stable cash flows in all but extreme drought conditions. This paper emphasises the need to include site-specific, long-term variability and whole-farm costs in...

FEASIBILITY OF INTEGRATING SHEEP AND CROPS WITH SMALLHOLDER RUBBER PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN INDONESIA AgEcon
Deaton, Brady J.; San, Nu Nu.
Diversified production systems are considered important tools for stabilizing the income of smallholder rubber producers in Indonesia. Based on empirical data collected from smallholder rubber producers in the Nucleus Estate Smallholder (NES) development project, estimations were made of the economic feasibility of integrating sheep and selected crops into smallholder rubber production plantations. The dynamic optimization procedure is used as an evaluation technique. This study finds that integration of sheep and crops into smallholder rubber production is economically feasible, particularly for those who utilize family labor for hand harvesting grass and grazing sheep. Integrating sheep alone increases the net present value of future income by 20%....
