Quick and Inexpensive Method to Elaborate Tissue Punches Useful in Paraffin Tissue Microarrays International Journal of Morphology
García-Garza,Rubén; Rodríguez-Vidales,Edgar Paolo; Soto-Domínguez,Adolfo.
The tissue microarrays (TMAs) were first called multitumor block. In 1998 was described the current technique, that uses an innovated sampling method for more than 1,000 cylindrical paraffin tissue core biopsies in a single paraffin block. TMAs are now considered as a useful powerful research tool in Histology and Pathology laboratories, for the standardization of immunohistochemical techniques along with in situ hybridization. However, one disadvantage to its widespread use is the high cost of professional paraffin tissue punches, and the complexity in the development of homemade devices previously described in other studies. This study describes a step by step process to develop four different home-made devices made with materials that are common in...

Andreae Vesalii: The Temporomandibular Joint International Journal of Morphology
Vasconcellos,Henrique Ayres de; Barros de Vasconcellos,Pedro Henrique.
The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) has been studied for many years since the finding of mummies and fossils. In Egypt of the pharaos, papyrus from the year 3000 B.C. remark the care in which a luxation of the TMJ should be undertaken. In India, at the beggining of the Christian age, in Hipocrates' Greece and in Pergamo of Galenus the TMJ has also been the focus of several studies. But it was Vesalius (Andreae Vesalli), with his particular teaching methodology and publication of his masterpiece De Humani Corporis Fabrica, who showed the way to study Human Anatomy as it is done today. The description of the face bones, of the articular disc and the muscles used for chewing are all a contribution from Vesalius to the anatomic-functional study of TMJ

MORFOLOGÍA Y MORFOMETRÍA DEL ANILLO FEMORAL EN EL HOMBRE International Journal of Morphology

Origin of Inferior Phrenic Arteries in the Celiac Trunk International Journal of Morphology
Petrella,Selma; Rodriguez,Celio Fernando de Sousa; Sgrott,Emerson Alexandre; Medeiros Fernandes,Geraldo José; Marques,Sergio Ricardo; Prates,José Carlos.
The knowledge of the arterial anatomic variations is very important for the clinical, radiological and surgical diagnosis. Regarding inferior phrenic arteries, which irrigate the diaphragm, it is known that they vary in relation to their origin. The purpose of the present study is to verify these variations. The abdominal cavity of eighty-nine adult cadavers of both sexes was dissected, of which 69 fixed in 10% formalin solution and 20 non-fixed. The fixed cadavers were dissected in Laboratories of Anatomy of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP-EPM), the Santo Amaro University (UNISA) and Lusiadas de Santos University (UNILUS). The non-fixed cadavers were dissected from the Death Verification Service of the city of São Paulo (USP) and from the...

Phenytoin-induced Toxicity in the Postnatal Developing Cerebellum of Wistar Rats, Effect of Calotropis procera on Histomorphometric Parameters International Journal of Morphology
Imosemi,I.O; Osinubi,A.A.
The role of methanolic leaf extracts of Calotropis procera in phenytoin-induced toxicity on histomorphometric variables in the postnatal developing cerebellum of Wistar rat was studied. Pregnant rats were treated orally with 50 mg/kg phenytoin in pre and post natal life and 300 mg/kg methanolic leaf extract of Calotropis procera 1 hour prior to phenytoin administration. 200 mg/kg vitamin C (standard antioxidant) was also administered orally 1 hour prior to phenytoin treatment. The control animals received water. Standard diet of rat pellets and water were provided ad libitum. At the end of the experiment, the offspring of days 1, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 50 post partum, five per group were sacrificed by cervical dislocation. The cerebellum of all groups were...

Assessment of Antimicrobial Activity and Healing Potential of Mucous Secretion of Achatina fulica International Journal of Morphology
Santana,Wagno Alcântara; Melo,Cláudia Moura de; Cardoso,Juliana Cordeiro; Pereira-Filho,Rose Nely; Rabelo,Alessandra Silva; Reis,Francisco Prado; Albuquerque-Júnior,Ricardo Luiz Cavalcanti de.
Achatina fulica's secretion has been recently related to antibacterial, antifungal, and cicatricial properties, and it is influenced by the kind of food offered. Therefore, this study investigated the healing potential of dressing films based on mucous secretion of Achatina fulica. Thus, surgical wounds performed in black wistar rats were dressed with films based on collagen, and on mucous secretion of A. fulica fed with Lactuca sativa; undresses worked as wounds control. After 3, 7, 14 and 21 days the animals were euthanized, and the wounds were microscopically evaluated. On the 3rd and 7th days dressing films based on mucus provided acceleration of the formation maturation of granulation tissue, better epithelization rates, and more rapid replacement of...

Morphological Alterations of the Surfaces of Enamel and Dentin of Deciduous Teeth Irradiated with Nd:YAG, C0(2)and Diode Lasers International Journal of Morphology
Souza,Mónica Rodrigues de; Watanabe,Ii-Sei; Azevedo,Luciane H; Tanji,Edgar Y.
In this work, we studied the effects of C0(2), Nd:YAG and diode lasers on the enamel and dentin of deciduous human teeth. After the irradiations, the samples were duly prepared and set up on metallic bases, covered with gold and examined in the scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the irradiation with the C0(2) mode locked laser with 1.0 W power caused melting and irregularities with small cavities on the surface of the enamel. The irradiated area on the dentin surface appeared circular and well delimited, containing blocks of dentin and cracks. By using the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with 1.0 W mean power and 10 Hz frequency, the enamel surface presented granules of molten enamel, with a typical melting look. The irradiated dentin surface...

Ultrastructural Effects of the Propineb on Brain of Fetuses During Rat Pregnancy International Journal of Morphology
Ekinci,C; Tahaoglu,A. E; Yavuz,D; Deveci,E; Aktas,A; Yilmaz,T; Yumusak,Ö; Yükselmis,O.
Propineb is a fungicide with a propylene-bis-dithiocarbamate structure. Pregnant Wistar rats were exposed to 400 ppm propineb concentrations in 5 ml distilled water, 5 days per week until the end of pregnancy. The rats were treated with propineb for 16 days and the brains of litter rats were sacrificed at first day of birth after which their brains were collected. Ultrastructural examination of the brains of the fetuses and propineb-treated pregnant females revealed a variety of histopathological effects. We suggest that mitochondrial damage may be an effective factor for neuron necrosis. These results supported the proposal that the exposure to fungicides such as propineb and to other naturally occurring compounds which inhibit mitochondrial function, may...

Morphological Study of the Liver in the Teleost Oreochromis niloticus International Journal of Morphology
Vicentini,C. A.; Franceschini-Vicentini,I. B.; Bombonato,M. T. S.; Bertolucci,B.; Lima,S. G.; Santos,A. S.
Liver samples of Oreochromis niloticus cultivated in floating net cages were fixed for histological and ultrastructural studies with the objective of describing the hepatic parenchymal structure and the intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue. Anatomically, the liver showed only two hepatic lobes. Histological analysis demonstrated that the hepatocytes were spread out as anastomotic cords, arranged in two cellular layers and surrounded by sinusoids. The intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue exhibited an acinar arrangement and was diffused in the hepatic parenchyma. Structural analysis showed that the hepatocytes had a rounded nucleus and a rough endoplasmic reticulum with a parallel disposition to the nuclear membrane. The exocrine pancreatic cells...

Calcaneal Pitch and Lateral Talocalcaneal Angle among Nigerians International Journal of Morphology
Dahiru,Ahmadu Usman; Ojo,Samuel Adeniyi; Hamidu,Ahmed Umdagas; Danborno,Barnabas.
Various papers in the fields of Radiology, orthopaedics and radiographic anatomy have employed the use of angles measured on X-rays to make diagnoses, select treatment modalities in the management of foot disorders as well as predicting the outcome of interventions to these disorders. Calcaneal pitch (CP) and lateral talocalcaneal angle (L TCA) are angles that can be drawn on lateral standing radiographs of the foot and are used widely in the diagnosis, prognosis and choice of treatment modalities for various disorders of the foot. Data on these important radiological tools are lacking in Nigeria. Hence, the study is an attempt to bridge this gap. Using a hinge goniometer, the angles were measured from normal lateral standing radiographs of the foot. Mean...
