A plot of one's own: gender relations and irrigated land allocation policies in Burkina Faso AgEcon
Zwarteveen, Margreet Z..
Discusses the potential opportunities and pitfalls of introducing market forces into the process of water allocation. Proposes several preconditions for beneficial privatization of water allocation and argues for a more sophisticated form of analysis than that generally allowed by proponents of basic needs or of free market approaches.

Policy Implications of a Behavioural Economics Analysis of Land Use Determinants in Rural Scotland AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; Sutherland, Lee-Ann; Barnes, Andrew Peter; Renwick, Alan W.; McCrum, Gillian; Blackstock, Kirsty.
The paper analyses the land use behaviour of Scottish land managers and the factors influencing it in the current context of the EU rural land use policies. The analysis employs a frequently used behavioural economics method, namely structural equation modelling (SEM). Central to the empirical analysis in this paper is a cross-section database containing data collected in May to June 2009 through telephone interviews of 600 land managers in Scotland. The model tests and estimates the relationships between land use behaviour, i.e., behavioural intentions to change the size of business/holding, and several of its a priori determinants found significant in the scientific literature. The results indicate that a stronger propensity to change size of their...

Demand for Urban Forests and Economic Welfare: Evidence from the Southeastern U.S. Cities AgEcon
Zhu, Pengyu; Zhang, Yaoqi.
This study examines the relationship between urban forests and household income and population density in the 149 cities with populations over 40,000 in nine southeastern states. Our empirical results show that urban forest percentage across the cities has characteristics of the environmental Kuznets curve. We find that household income around $39,000 is a threshold that changes the relationship between income and urban forest coverage from negative to positive, whereas the impact of population density on urban forests is just the opposite, from positive to negative when population density is around 180 persons per square kilometer.

Estimating the Implicit Value of Crop Stubble as a Barrier to Technology Adoption in Morocco AgEcon
Magnan, Nicholas; Larson, Douglas M..
For mixed cereal-livestock farmers, cereal production provides a bundle of goods. Grain is consumed by the household or sold at market, and crop residues are used as livestock feed. The straw component of crop residue can be bought and sold at market and therefore has a well-established local market price. Crop stubble, the portion of the crop residue left on the ground, is generally not traded and therefore has no market price. Some agricultural technologies require farmers to forgo using crop stubble as feed, and cultivation of high value crops entails sacrificing residue production altogether. In this paper we apply a structural econometric model to household data from Morocco to estimate the implicit value of crop stubble. We use a sample splitting...

Cattle Accumulation and Land Use Intensification by Households in the Brazilian Amazon AgEcon
Caviglia-Harris, Jill L..
In developing countries across the globe the impact of livestock on deforestation levels has been profound. This paper explores the role of the cattle industry in household decision making for small landholders in the Brazilian Amazon. Important inquiries raised in the literature are addressed, including the determinants of the co-evolution of deforestation and cattle herds, the possibility of production specialization, and the role of cattle in household livelihoods. Panel data suggest that households have changed focus from crop introduction to cattle. Empirical models reveal that location, wealth, and education are among the important determinants of production decisions and cattle accumulation. Policy recommendations include a focus on the cattle...

Land Use Issues: The Last Settler’s Syndrome AgEcon
Groothuis, Peter A..
In the last settler’s syndrome, each new settler wants the area to remain as it was on their arrival. Newcomers’ preferences often differ from long-term residents, and conflicts arise. To explore land use issues among various groups, a survey of opinions on mountain views was developed and administered to Watauga County residents in western North Carolina. Watauga County provides an interesting case study, because it is a growing area with an influx of newcomers along with long-time residents. The results suggest that agreements can be achieved on some land use issues, whereas disagreements will arise on others.

Land Use Change and Ecosystem Valuation in North Georgia AgEcon
Ngugi, Daniel; Mullen, Jeffrey D.; Bergstrom, John C..
A model of land allocation at the aggregate watershed level was developed assuming profit/net benefit maximization under risk neutrality. The econometric land use model was analyzed as an equation by equation SURE model as all the independent variables were the same for both equations. In analyzing effect of land use change on water quality, we took year 2005 as our baseline and postulated three land use scenarios. We applied Benefit Transfer techniques to value water quality changes resulting from land use change and estimated lower bounds for WTP to improve water quality to meet the FCB criterion for drinking water supply and fishing waters and BOD (DO) criteria for fishing waters. Water quality modeling revealed that land use change would result in...

Managing Conflict Over Natural Resources in Greater Kordofan, Sudan: Some Recurrent Patterns and Governance Implications AgEcon
Siddig, El Fatih Ali; El-Harizi, Khalid; Prato, Bettina.
Despite the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which brought to an end 20 years of civil war in the Sudan, this country continues to experience smaller-scale conflicts, particularly around access to and control of natural resources. Some observers lay the blame for this on ethnopolitical or tribal divisions. However, this paper argues that there are a variety of factors at play behind these conflicts, notably the combination of resource scarcity with a crisis of governance that is particularly evident in transitional areas like the Kordofan region. To gain a sense of the range of conflicts around natural resources in Kordofan, the authors reviewed existing records such as government archives; conducted interviews with politicians, federal and state...

Water-resource and land-use issues AgEcon
Calder, Ian R..
This paper reviews perceived notions of the relationships between catchment land use and hydrology and explores whether much of the widely disseminated folklore, so often inextricably linked with issues of land use, is based on myth or reality. Gaps in our knowledge of the underlying processes in relation to land use and hydrology are identified. Our ability to apply this knowledge at different scales ranging from the plot to the catchment and regional scales are discussed and specific examples are drawn from Indian and African case studies. Methods for linking spatially distributed land-use hydrological models with economics and ecology through decision support systems are outlined and proposed as a framework for the integrated management of land and...

THE MEDIATION OF VARIANCE CONFLICTS: AN EMPIRICAL EVALUATION AgEcon
Duke, Joshua M.; Jost, Ryan P..
Since 1982, the New Castle County Superior Court in Delaware has promoted mediation, which attempts to resolve filed conflicts prior to trial. This paper evaluates how spatial land-use conflicts channel through mediation and litigation. Data suggest that mediations fail because one of the key disputing parties does not play a direct role in mediation and litigation. The data then inform a predictive model of litigated outcomes in which disputants share in the responsibility for conflict. By alleviating some of the uncertainty of litigation and proposing win-win, mediated outcomes, the model may be used facilitate future mediations.

Spatially Optimal Habitat Management For Natural Pest Control Services AgEcon
Zhang, Wei; van derr Werf, Wopke; Swinton, Scott M..
The control of crop pests by their natural enemies represents an important ecosystem service that maintains the stability of agricultural systems and has the potential to mitigate pest control costs. Recently, there has been growing interest in enhancing natural control services via habitat management that provides resources for adult natural enemies, such as food and shelter. Management of natural enemy populations has received little attention in the economic literature on pest control. Most such prior studies have explored optimal chemical-based pest management. One recent paper developed a threshold-based pesticide decision rule to account for the presence of natural enemies. However, no prior studies have investigated economically optimal spatial...

SPATIAL DEVELOPMENTS OF HUNGARIAN AGRICULTURE IN THE TRANSITION: THE CASE OF CROP PRODUCTION AgEcon
Ferto, Imre.
The paper investigates spatial changes in cultivation and land use of wheat, maize and oilseed in Hungarian agriculture using different methods to measure these changes. The results suggest that spatial structure of crop productions has remained fairly stable during analysed period. The spatial concentration increased significantly for wheat and maize production and maize land use, whilst the changes were not significant for other cases. Estimates confirm the presence of spatial autocorrelation for all cases. The degree of spatial autocorrelation has no unambiguous pattern over time, except for maize production. Finally, we have not found significant relationship measured by PSE index between agricultural support and spatial concentration, but estimates...
