Post-fire dynamics of the woody vegetation of a savanna forest (Cerradão) in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone Acta Botanica
Reis,Simone Matias; Lenza,Eddie; Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Gomes,Letícia; Forsthofer,Mônica; Morandi,Paulo Sérgio; Marimon Junior,Ben Hur; Feldpausch,Ted R.; Elias,Fernando.
ABSTRACTFire can change the species composition, diversity, and structure of savanna vegetation, thus altering growth and mortality rates. Such changes in the woody vegetation of burned savanna forest were evaluated over four years in comparison to unburned savanna forest. All woody plants with a diameter at breast height > 10 cm were measured in 100 permanent plots. Six months later, 38 of these plots were burned. Three and a half years later, all surviving individuals were re-sampled. Species richness, diversity, and the number of individuals did not change in the burned plots, although they had significantly higher (p < 0.05) increases in basal area and mortality rates (5.1% year-1) than the unburned plots (3.0% year-1).Tachigali vulgarishad the...

Temporal changes in species composition, diversity, and woody vegetation structure of savannas in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone Acta Botanica
Maracahipes-Santos,Leonardo; Santos,Josias Oliveira dos; Reis,Simone Matias; Lenza,Eddie.
ABSTRACT Vegetation in the transition between tropical forest and savanna is hyperdynamic and there is evidence that in the absence of fire, forest advances over savanna. Between 2008 and 2013 we evaluated changes in species composition and diversity and in the structure of the woody vegetation of savanna physiognomies in the transition between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes that were fire free for 11 years. The physiognomies form a gradient from savanna woodland (Typical Cerrado - TC), to low woodland (Dense Cerrado - DC), to woodland (locally called Cerradão - CO). We hypothesise that: 1) the more open physiognomies (TC and DC) are more dynamic compared to the closed physiognomy (CO); and 2) in the absence of fire vegetation tends to become more forested....

Mortality and diameter growth of lianas in a semideciduous forest fragment in Southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Lombardi,Julio Antonio; Temponi,Lívia Godinho; Leite,Claudia Aparecida.
This is a 30-month study of mortality rates and diameter growth rates of lianas in a semideciduous forest fragment in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Results are presented for 484 specimens of lianas, of which 103 experienced individual mortality (21.3% of the sampled population). Mortality varied according to class of stem diameter, but did not vary throughout the months of year, or between seasons or years. Mortality rates were higher than those recorded in other studies, perhaps due to the age of this secondary forest. Stem diameter growth rates were measured for 385 lianas, the survivors after 30 months plus four plants that died just before the final census, and averaged 1.2mm/year, ranging from 0mm/year (Chioccoca alba) to 4.8mm/year...

Woody vegetation dynamics in a floodplain campo de murundus in central Brazil Acta Botanica
Pinto,José Roberto Rodrigues; Mews,Henrique Augusto; Jancoski,Halina Soares; Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Bomfim,Bárbara de Oliveira.
Campos de murundus (grasslands dotted with knolls that are covered with savanna-like woody vegetation) are a common landscape in central Brazil. In this study, we assessed for the first time the dynamics of the vegetation in a floodplain campo de murundus, describing changes in composition and structure of the woody vegetation. In 2005, we established 16 permanent 25 × 25 m plots, where we identified and mapped individuals with a trunk diameter at the base ≥ 2.86 cm, as well as measuring the height of those individuals. In 2008 (after two fire events), we resampled the plots. In 2005, we had registered 4.54 m² ha-1 of basal area, 430 individuals, 42 species, 36 genera and 24 families. In 2008, we found an increase in basal area (to 4.65 m² ha-1) and a...

Fish is the main source of protein in the Amazon and fishing is one of the most important sources of income for the Amazonian population. Serrasalmus spilopleura is a species that have been increasingly consumed by riverside communities, although it is only occasionally commercialized at regional markets. Therefore, this work sought to generate information about the population biology of S. spilopleura captured in floodplain lakes, Jaitêua and São Lourenço, in Manacapuru, Amazonas State. The population parameters were estimated by analyzing the distribution of the length frequency with the help of the ELEFAN I routine of the FISAT II program. The weight/length relationship was estimated by linear regression, longevity by Taylor’s method, rate of natural...

Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) present in the flowers of the balsa wood Ochroma lagopus Swartz, 1788 - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i4.7103 Biological Sciences
Brighenti, Deodoro Magno; Universidade Federal de Lavras; Brighenti, Carla Regina Guimarães; Universidade Federal São João Del-Rei.
The flower of balsa wood holds about 10 to 15 mL of nectar, which helps attracting pollinating agents, since the genus Ochroma is incapable of self-fertilization. However, a high mortality of bees is observed in these flowers. The present study investigated the frequency and constancy of mortality of the individuals of the family Apidae that fed on nectar from the balsa wood. Data was gathered from June to August 2008, in Lavras – Minas Gerais State, Brazil. In addition, the survival of the Africanized bees that fed on the nectar of this flower was compared to those that fed on 50% aqueous solution of honey. Forty flowers were analyzed, and 949 individuals of the orders Hymenoptera (98.1%), Hemiptera (0.95%), Coleoptera (0.74%) and Diptera (0.21%) were...

Ferns influence on the woody species seedling bank in semi-deciduous forest, Southern Brazil Biological Sciences
Carvalho, Eloisa de Souza; Pimenta, José Antonio; Bianchini, Edmilson.
Different species of plants can act as environmental filters affecting the composition, structure and spatial distribution of seeds and seedlings of forest species. This study aimed to examine whether the presence of the fern stratum acts as a biotic environmental filter on the woody species seedling bank in a semi-deciduous forest remnant (Atlantic biome), Southern Brazil. Two experiments were developed in areas with ferns (F) and ferns-free (NF): a) richness and abundance of woody seedling bank were determined in 10 plots (25 m2) in each area; b) seedlings abundance of Actinostemon concolor (Spreng.) Müll. Arg., Aspidosperma polyneuron Müll. Arg., Euterpe edulis Mart., Guarea kunthiana A. Juss. and Inga marginata Kunth were monitored for a year in three...

Challenge of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) fed diets supplemented with vitamins C and E by Aeromonas hydrophila under different temperature Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Garcia,F.; Moraes,F.R.; Martins,M.L..
Pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus fed diets supplemented with three vitamins C and E levels (zero, 250, and 500mg vitamin/kg diet) were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila under different temperatures. Fish were kept in 300L plastic tanks and fed during the first 60 days with diets without vitamins C and E, in an attempt to reduce vitamin sources. After this period, fish were maintained at an initial density of 14 fish/tank and test diets were offered during 60 days. At the end of the experiment, all fish were infected with 6×10(6)CFU of A. hydrophila/fish, intraperitoneally injected. No interaction of dietary levels of vitamin C vs. E on mortality was observed. Supplementation with vitamins C and E did not decrease the mortality rate of fish challenged with...

Hypoxia increases susceptibility of Pacific white shrimp to whitespot syndrome virus (WSSV) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lehmann,M.; Schleder,D.D.; Guertler,C.; Perazzolo,L.M.; Vinatea,L..
The present study aimed to evaluate the mortality, reactive oxygen species production (ROS) and total hemocyte counts (THC) of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei infected with the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) at three levels of oxygen saturation. For this, 360 shrimp (20±2g) were distributed in 24 tanks (60L), divided in two groups (infected and non-infected), which were subjected to 30, 60 and 100% of dissolved oxygen saturation (in quadruplicate). During 96 hours after infection, daily hemolymph samples were collected for hemato-immunological parameter evaluation (THC and ROS) and dead animals were removed and computed to assess cumulative mortality rates. In the infected group, animals subjected to 100% saturation showed higher ROS production...

Mortality on grower/finisher-only swine operations in the United States Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Losinger,W.C.; Bush,E.J.; Smith,M.A.; Corso,B.A..
For 53 grower/finisher-only swine operations that participated in the United States National Animal Health Monitoring System 1995 National Swine Study, mortality among finisher pigs ranged from 0 to 12.0% over a 6-month period. Twenty-six (49.1%) had <2% mortality, and 27 (50.9%) had >2% mortality. Nine (17.0%) operations experienced >4% mortality. Fisher's exact test revealed that operations with all-in all-out management were significantly more likely to have <2% mortality than operations with continuous management, and that operations where all finisher pigs came from farrowing units belonging to the operation (either on-site or off-site) were significantly more likely to have <2% mortality than operations where >1 grower/finisher pig...

Studies on parasitemia courses and mortality in mice infected with genetically distant Trypanosoma cruzi clonets Biol. Res.
WALLACE,ANNE; ORTÍZ,SILVIA; SÁNCHEZ,GITTITH; VILLAGRA,REBECA; MUGA,MABEL; SOLARI,ALDO.
The biological characterization of bloodstream forms of eleven Trypanosoma cruzi cloned stocks, corresponding to two genetically similar clonets (<A HREF="#19">19</A> and <A HREF="#20">20</A>) and one distant clonet (39), according to multilocus enzyme electrophoresis analysis, showed dissimilar parasitemia in an experimental isogenic mouse model. While clonet 39 stocks gave low parasitemias, clonets 19 or 20 stocks gave high parasitemias, independently of the inocula (10² and 10(4) bloodstream forms) used. High parasitemia did not always associate with greater mortality. Statistical studies on mortality using a low inocula showed significantly higher mortality with clonet 39 stocks when compared to clonets 19 or 20 stocks. Finally,...

Alcohol and Mortality from All Causes Biol. Res.
RENAUD,SERGE; LANZMANN-PETITHORY,DOMINIQUE; GUEGUEN,RENÉ; CONARD,PASCALE.
A large number of prospective studies have observed an inverse relationship between a moderate intake of alcohol and coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality. Concerning death from all-causes, results are not unanimous. Alcohol intake was associated with a protection of all-cause mortality in England and USA physicians and the large study of the American Cancer Society. None of these studies separated the effects of different alcoholic beverages. In our prospective studies in France on 35 000 middle-aged men, we observed that only wine at moderate intake, was associated with a protective effect on all-cause mortality. The reason was that in addition to the known effect on cardiovascular diseases, a very moderate intake of wine, protected also from...

Dangerous neighborhood: saurophagy between syntopic Tropidurus lizards Biota Neotropica
Passos,Daniel Cunha; Monteiro,Felipe Augusto Correia; Nogueira,Carlos Henrique de Oliveira.
Saurophagy constitutes an important source of mortality among lizards and has been reported for the genus Tropidurus. However, the extension of this behavior remains unknown. Herein, we record the predation of T. jaguaribanus by its congener T. hispidus. This is the first report of saurophagy among different species of syntopicTropidurus. Furthermore, whereas published records of saurophagy tend to be directed against juveniles, this case involved two adult individuals.

Population aspects of Bryconamericus stramineus in streams of the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Vasconcelos,Lilian Paula; Súarez,Yzel Rondon; Lima-Junior,Sidnei Eduardo.
In order to describe some aspects of the population ecology of Bryconamericus stramineus in the Guiraí River basin, upper Paraná River basin, samples were taken bimonthly from October 2006 to August 2007 at seven sites in the basin. A total of 960 individuals, including 532 females, 316 males, and 112 of undetermined sex, were collected. A significant variation in the sex ratio was observed (Χ2 = 32.82; p < 0.001). Females were larger (59.7 mm) than males (58.9 mm); however, males showed a larger angular growth coefficient (b) than females. It was estimated that 50% of females were sexually mature at 36.4 mm. The highest rate of ovary development was observed in October, while in June 2007 no mature females were found. Mean fecundity was estimated at...

Mortality of Kalliapseudes schubartii in unvegetated soft bottoms of the estuarine region of the Lagoa dos Patos BABT
Fonseca,Duane Barros; D'Incao,Fernando.
Studies were carried iut on seasonal mortality by taking samples of Kalliapseudes schubartii (Crustacea: Tanaidacea) for a year in the estuarine region of the Lagoa dos Patos (southern Brazil). Results demonstrated no significant difference in seasonal mortality rates, which suggest that populations of K. schubartii was heavily preyed on year round and that an assumption of a significantly higher mortality in summer/autumn than in spring/winter might not be held in unvegetated soft bottoms of the estuarine regions of the Lagoa dos Patos.

Spatial heterogeneity and its influence on Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Caesalpiniaceae) BABT
Resende,Júlio Carlos França; Klink,Carlos Augusto; Schiavini,Ivan.
Population dynamics and structure of young individuals of the tree Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. (Caesalpiniaceae) were studied in the gallery forest of the Panga Ecological Station, Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. Three distinct habitats were recognized in this forest, Dike, Middle and Edge zone. Four annual surveys of plant height, diameter at plant base and density were made between 1993 and 1996. The species showed an aggregated distribution in all three habitats. Population structure in all four surveys presented the typical reversed "J" form, characteristic of populations in local regeneration. For the whole population, mortality rates during the four years were constant and low (average of 4.8 % per year), while recruitment declined during the same period...

ABSTRACT Background: The impact of central venous catheter (CVC) removal on the outcome of patients with candidemia is controversial, with studies reporting discrepant results depending on the time of CVC removal (early or any time during the course of candidemia). Objective: Evaluate the effect of time to CVC removal, early (within 48 h from the diagnosis of candidemia) vs. removal at any time during the course of candidemia, on the 30-day mortality. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 285 patients with candidemia analyzing CVC removal within 48 h (first analysis) or at any time (second analysis). Results: A CVC was in place in 212 patients and was removed in 148 (69.8%), either early (88 patients, 41.5%) or late (60 patients, 28.3%). Overall, the...
