Abstract Genes related to the response to drought stress in leaf and root tissue of drought-susceptible (DS) and tolerant (DT) genotypes were characterized by RNA-Seq. In total, 54,750 transcripts, representative of 28,590 genes, were identified; of these, 1,648 were of high-fidelity (merge of 12 libraries) and described for the first time in the Andean germplasm. From the 1,239 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 458 were identified in DT, with a predominance of genes in categories of oxidative stress, response to stimulus and kinase activity. Most genes related to oxidation-reduction terms in roots were early triggered in DT (T75) compared to DS (T150) suggestive of a mechanism of tolerance by reducing the damage from ROS. Among the KEGG enriched by... |

Abstract Precise replication of genetic material is essential to maintain genome stability. DNA replication is a tightly regulated process that ensues faithful copies of DNA molecules to daughter cells during each cell cycle. Perturbation of DNA replication may compromise the transmission of genetic information, leading to DNA damage, mutations, and chromosomal rearrangements. DNA replication stress, also referred to as DNA replicative stress, is defined as the slowing or stalling of replication fork progression during DNA synthesis as a result of different insults. Oncogene activation, one hallmark of cancer, is able to disturb numerous cellular processes, including DNA replication. In fact, extensive work has indicated that oncogene-induced replication... |

Abstract Obesity is a major public health problem worldwide. It has a complex etiology, influenced by environmental and genetic factors. FTO has been recognized as an important genetic factor for obesity development. This study evaluated the contribution of FTO polymorphisms (rs9939609 and rs17817449) for extreme obesity in terms of the period of obesity onset, anthropometric, and biochemical parameters. The haplotype and the combined effects of FTO risk alleles on obesity susceptibility were evaluated. We investigated 169 normal-weight subjects (body mass index, BMI: 22.8 [21.0; 24.0] kg/m2) and 123 extremely obese individuals (BMI: 47.6 [44.1; 53.1] kg/m2). Genotyping was performed by real time PCR. Our results showed a strong association between FTO... |

ABSTRACT Potassium (K) is the nutrient taken up in the greatest quantity by the potato plant. Obtaining information about the relationship between tuber yield and K application rate allows improvements in fertilizer use efficiency. We aimed to evaluate the variation in potassium fertilizer doses in uptake rate of other nutrients and in potato tuber yield. The experiments were carried out in Unaí-MG testing cultivars Ágata and Atlantic and in Mucugê-BA evaluating cultivar Ágata. The experimental design used was randomized blocks. We studied the rates of 0; 70; 110; 220, and 450 kg ha-1 K2O. The increase in K rate reduced the levels of S, Ca, Mg and B in Atlantic-Unaí, Ca, Mg, Zn and B in Ágata-Unaí and S, Fe and B in Ágata-Mucugê. The cultivar Atlantic-Unaí... |

ABSTRACT Onion’s (Allium cepa) slippery skin caused by Burkholderia gladioli pv. alliicola is one of the bacterial diseases that stand out in producing regions of the Brazilian Northeast. Given the importance and potential threat of this disease, and the absence of resistant varieties, the aim of this study was to evaluate the reaction of onion genotypes to slippery skin and to analyze the tolerance stability of the most promising genotypes to different strains of the bacteria. Nine strains of B. gladioli pv. alliicola were artificially inoculated in onion bulbs cv. Baia Periforme and the three most aggressive strains (CCRMBG39, CCRMBG172 and CCRMBG212) were selected to evaluate the tolerance to the disease. Fifty-eight onion genotypes were challenged with... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed at assessing the quality of the physiology and health of the coriander seeds processed in a gravity table. This was investigated at two settings namely, I with angle X 3.5° and angle Y 3.1° and II with 3.9° and 2.7° angles, with five gravity table discharges (high, high intermediate, intermediate, low intermediate and low) besides feeding. The experiment adopted the 2x6 factorial scheme, in a completely randomized design, with four replications. Two coriander seed batches of cultivar Verdão were used. The gravity table was adjusted to have 2.9 m s-1 air speed on the platform. The seed fractions discharged in the lower portion of the gravity table revealed poorer physiological performance than that of the others. Regulation I... |

ABSTRACT Storage is a fundamental step for maintaining seed quality after processing. Thus, in this study, we evaluated the physiological potential of onion seeds stored in different packings and environments. Impermeable, semi-permeable and permeable packings were tested under natural environment conditions (+19ºC), cold and dry chamber (10±2ºC and 33% RH) and cold chamber (16±2ºC and 60% RH), at 0, 90, 180, 270 and 360 days. The design was completely randomized in a 3x3x5 factorial scheme, with three replicates. In order to evaluate emergency in field, a 3x3 factorial arrangement (packing x environment) was adopted. Onion seeds maintained their physiological quality when stored in impermeable packing for 360 days, regardless of the environment. The... |

ABSTRACT For the simultaneous achievement of productivity in beet and cowpea associations, it is necessary to take into consideration the choice of cultivar combinations that offer a response in terms of production, product quality and efficiency of the intercropping. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the viability of production of beet cultivars combinations with cowpea cultivars in two cropping years (2016 and 2017) in a semi-arid environment. The treatments arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replications, consisted of the combination of two beet cultivars (Early Wonder and Fortuna) with four cowpea cultivars (BRS Tumucumaque, BRS Cauamé, BRS Guariba and BRS Itaim), in addition to monocultures of these cultivars, as an... |

ABSTRACT Nitrogen (N) strongly affects plant growth. However, little is known about the effects of the ammonium/nitrate ratio on pakchoi (Brassica rapa), especially its glucosinolates (GSs) contents which are involved in plant defense and many of them benefit to human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a constant N supply (8 mM) but with five ammonium/nitrate ratios (namely 0/8 mM, 2/6 mM, 4/4 mM, 6/2 mM and 8/0 mM) on the growth of pakchoi in a hydroponic system in 2 years. In both years, a higher biomass (dry weight) was in the 4/4 and 2/6 ammonium/nitrate treatments (2.3 and 2.2-fold compared to 8/0, respectively), with no significant difference in biomass between these two treatments. The biomass then decreased with increasing... |

ABSTRACT One of the main obstacles for food production in many developing countries, as in Brazil, is the damage caused by root-knot nematodes, mainly those belonging to the genus Meloidogyne. This study aimed to assess the resistance levels of 44 sweet potato genotypes to M. javanica, M. incognita race 1 and M. enterolobii. These researches were carried out in 2014, under greenhouse conditions in Brasília-DF, Brazil. A completely randomized design with six replicates of one plant/plot/treatment was used. We determined the gall index (GI) and egg mass index (EMI) in the root system of each plant, the number of eggs and juveniles per gram of root with galls and the nematode reproduction factor. M. javanica was less aggressive and reproduced in only 9.09% of... |

ABSTRACT Brazil’s low garlic productivity is attributed, mainly to the lateral shoot growth, a physiological anomaly characterized by early lateral shoot growth of cloves in noble group garlic cultivars. Considering the aforementioned information, the aim was to evaluate the occurrence of lateral shoot growth and productivity characteristics in garlic plants, cv. Chonan, subject to herbicide chemical stress. In order to do so, an experiment was conducted in outlining randomized blocks in a 3x5 factorial scheme, constituted by three herbicides (paraquat 500 g ha-1; ammonium gluphosinate 400 g ha-1 and glyphosate 720 g ha-1) and five subdoses (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of the minimum recommended dose of each herbicide). The electron transport rates (ETR) were... |
