Dendritic Gold Nanoparticles Towards Transparent and Electroactive Electrodes Anais da ABC (AABC)
IOST,RODRIGO M.; MARTINS,MARCCUS V.A.; CRESPILHO,FRANK N..
Abstract: The combination of UV-visible absorption and electrochemical experiments (spectroelectrochemistry) enables to obtain highly specific spectroscopic information (in situ and operando) from modified surfaces. However, such application can be limited by the self-absorbance, for example, when metallic nanoparticles are present on modified surfaces. Indium-tin oxide onto glass (ITO) is a typical electrode commonly used for spectroelectrochemistry; ITO is an oxide-based semiconductor, and in numerous applications it is necessary to promote the modification of the electrode surface without significant loss of transparency. Here, we report a simple strategy to obtain ITO electrodes modified with self-assembled polyelectrolytes and active dendritic gold...

Metabolic responses of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) exposed to phenol and post-exposure recovery Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moraes,Fernanda D.; Rossi,Priscila A.; Figueiredo,Juliana S.L.; Venturini,Francine P.; Cortella,Lucas R.X.; Moraes,Gilberto.
Metabolic adjustments were studied in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus exposed to 1.5 mg L-1 of phe nol (10% LC50) for four days and recovered for seven days. Lower triacylglycerol (TGA) stores and increased muscle fat free acids (FFA) suggest fat catabolism in muscle. Remarkable liver FFA decrease (-31%) suggests liver fat catabolism as well. Increased muscular ammonia levels and ASAT (aspartate aminotransferase) and decreased plasma aminoacids suggest higher muscular amino acid uptake. Constant levels of glucose and increased liver glycogen stores, associated with lower amino acids in plasma, indicate gluconeogenesis from amino acids. This is supported by higher hepatic ALAT and ASAT. Higher hepatic LDH followed by lower plasma lactate may indicate...

Efficiency of playback for assessing the occurrence of five bird species in Brazilian Atlantic Forest fragments Anais da ABC (AABC)
Boscolo,Danilo; Metzger,Jean Paul; Vielliard,Jacques M.E..
Playback of bird songs is a useful technique for species detection; however, this method is usually not standardized. We tested playback efficiency for five Atlantic Forest birds (White-browed Warbler Basileuterus leucoblepharus, Giant Antshrike Batara cinerea, Swallow-tailed Manakin Chiroxiphia caudata, Whiteshouldered Fire-eye Pyriglena leucoptera and Surucua Trogon Trogon surrucura) for different time of the day, season of the year and species abundance at the Morro Grande Forest Reserve (South-eastern Brazil) and at thirteen forest fragments in a nearby landscape. Vocalizations were broadcasted monthly at sunrise, noon and sunset, during one year. For B. leucoblepharus, C. caudata and T. surrucura, sunrise and noon were more efficient than sunset....

A possible relationship between gluconeogenesis and glycogen metabolism in rabbits during myocardial ischemia Anais da ABC (AABC)
AGUIAR,RAQUEL R. DE; VALE,DANIELA F.; SILVA,RENATO M. DA; MUNIZ,YOLANDA P.; ANTUNES,FERNANDA; LOGULLO,CARLOS; OLIVEIRA,ANDRÉ L.A.; ALMEIDA,ADRIANA J. DE.
ABSTRACT Ischemia is responsible for many metabolic abnormalities in the heart, causing changes in organ function. One of modifications occurring in the ischemic cell is changing from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. This change causes the predominance of the use of carbohydrates as an energy substrate instead of lipids. In this case, the glycogen is essential to the maintenance of heart energy intake, being an important reserve to resist the stress caused by hypoxia, using glycolysis and lactic acid fermentation. In order to study the glucose anaerobic pathways utilization and understand the metabolic adaptations, New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to ischemia caused by Inflow occlusion technique. The animals were monitored during surgery by pH and...

Model of wetland development of the Amapá coast during the late Holocene Anais da ABC (AABC)
Guimarães,José T.F.; Cohen,Marcelo C.L.; França,Marlon C.; Lara,Rúben J.; Behling,Hermann.
The modern vegetation types, sedimentary sequences, pollen records and radiocarbon dating obtained from three sediment cores from Calçoene Coastal Plain were used to provide a palaeoecological history during the late Holocene of Amapá coastal wetland according to flood regime, sea-level and climatic changes. Based on these records, four phases of vegetation development are presented and they probably reflect the interaction between the flow energy to the sediment accumulation and the brackish/freshwater influence in the vegetation. This work suggests interchanges among time periods characterized by marine and fluvial influence. The longitudinal profile did not reveal the occurrence of mangrove in the sediment deposited around 2100 yr B.P. During the second...

Oogenesis pattern and type of ovariole of the parasitoid Palmistichus elaeisis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Andrade,Gilberto S.; Sousa,Adalberto H.; Santos,Juliana C.; Gama,Farah C.; Serrão,José E.; Zanuncio,José C..
The knowledge on ovigeny in parasitoids is important for basic studies on physiology and applied biological control. The ovigeny pattern and type of ovariole of the parasitoid Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were studied in newly-emerged females at seven, 14, 24 and 48 h intervals after their emergence from Tenebrio molitor L. pupae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Females of P. elaeisis presented ovaries composed by four ovarioles of the meroistic polytrophic type. The yolk accumulation and chorionogenesis in P. elaeisis were concluded 24 h after the female emergence. The 48 h-old females show a high quantity of egg ready for oviposition. These findings can help to improve the mass production of P. elaeisis and the...

A memory like a female Fur Seal: long-lasting recognition of pup's voice by mothers Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mathevon,Nicolas; Charrier,Isabelle; Aubin,Thierry.
In colonial mammals like fur seals, mutual vocal recognition between mothers and their pup is of primary importance for breeding success. Females alternate feeding sea-trips with suckling periods on land, and when coming back from the ocean, they have to vocally find their offspring among numerous similar-looking pups. Young fur seals emit a 'mother-attraction call' that presents individual characteristics. In this paper, we review the perceptual process of pup's call recognition by Subantarctic Fur Seal Arctocephalus tropicalis mothers. To identify their progeny, females rely on the frequency modulation pattern and spectral features of this call. As the acoustic characteristics of a pup's call change throughout the lactation period due to the growing...

Genetic drift in mammals Anais da ABC (AABC)
BACH,JEAN-FRANÇOIS.
Abstract: Genetic drift is the fortuitous occurrence of genetic events that when they become fixed modify the genome of populations. They can take the form of mutations of single nucleotides (SNPs), the insertion or deletion of short sequences (Indels) or the repetitions of short sequences (CNV i.e. copy number variants) or long insertions or deletion (structural modifications). Their frequency is 10-9 to 10-8 depending on the species, or 50 to 100 per birth in humans. The incidence of these de novo mutations is higher when the father is old at conception. It thus appears that genetic drift, which constitutes the initial element of evolution, has a very strong dynamics. Its intervention in the appearance or disappearance of some major phenotypes is...

Alcohol Effects on the P2 component of Auditory Evoked Potentials Anais da ABC (AABC)
HERNÁNDEZ,OSCAR H.; GARCÍA-MARTÍNEZ,ROLANDO; MONTEÓN,VÍCTOR.
This is a second part of a research aimed to study the effects of alcohol on the electrophysiological processes in student volunteers. The first part showed that alcohol slowed the Omitted Stimulus Potential (OSP). This work studied the ethanol effects on the parameters (i.e. rate of rise, amplitude and peak latency) of the P2 component of the evoked potentials (EPs) yielded by trains of auditory stimuli. It is hypothesized here that if P2 and OSP waves share some common neural processes then alcohol should also affect these specific parameters. A dose of 0.8 g/kg of alcohol or a placebo (0 g/kg) was administered to two groups of 15 young men who were tested before and again after treatment. The pre-post treatment change in each of the measurements was...

Expression and function of G-protein-coupled receptorsin the male reproductive tract Anais da ABC (AABC)
Avellar,Maria Christina W.; Lázari,Maria Fatima M.; Porto,Catarina S..
This review focuses on the expression and function of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), α1-adrenoceptors and relaxin receptors in the male reproductive tract. The localization and differential expression of mAChR and α1-adrenoceptor subtypes in specific compartments of the efferent ductules, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicle and prostate of various species indicate a role for these receptors in the modulation of luminal fluid composition and smooth muscle contraction, including effects on male fertility. Furthermore, the activation of mAChRs induces transactivation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the Sertoli cell proliferation. The relaxin receptors are present in the testis, RXFP1 in elongated spermatids and Sertoli...

Evolution of acoustic communication in crickets: phylogeny of Eneopterinae reveals an adaptive radiation involving high-frequency calling (Orthoptera, Grylloidea, Eneopteridae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Robillard,Tony; Desutter-Grandcolas,Laure.
Evolution of dominant frequencies in songs of Eneopterinae crickets was studied with respect to phylogeny. Two characters are optimized on the tree: the first describes the frequency resulting from the vibration of the harp (Fda), and the second is due to the vibration of other tegminal areas (Fdb). Fda was found to be relatively stable through the subfamily. Its low ancestral state is replaced by a high Fda only once, resulting in high-frequency calling in [Cardiodactylus (Lebinthus-Agnotecous)]. A high Fdb component is added to the low ancestral Fda in Eneoptera guyanensis, resulting in frequency modulation. The onset of high Fd in this first subclade is accompanied by a high cladogenesis rate, which supports a hypothesis of adaptive radiation for high...

The length of the dry season may be associated with leaf scleromorphism in cerrado plants Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,MARCELO C.; FRANCO,AUGUSTO C.; HARIDASAN,MUNDAYATAN; ROSSATTO,DAVI R.; ARAÚJO,JANAÍNA F. DE; MORELLATO,LEONOR P.C.; HABERMANN,GUSTAVO.
Despite limitations of low fertility and high acidity of the soils, the cerrado flora is the richest amongst savannas. Many cerrado woody species show sclerophyllous leaves, which might be related to the availability of water and nutrients in the soil. To better understand the function and structure of cerrado vegetation within its own variations, we compared two cerrado communities: one in its core region in central Brazil (Brasília, DF) and the other on its southern periphery (Itirapina, SP). We contrasted the length of the dry season, soil fertility rates, leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg and the specific leaf area (SLA) between these communities. The dry season was shorter on the periphery, where the soil was more fertile although more acidic....

Impact of Nitrate and Ammonium ratio on Nutrition and Growth of two Epiphytic Orchids Anais da ABC (AABC)
MANTOVANI,CIBELE; PRADO,RENATO M.; PIVETTA,KATHIA F.L..
Abstract Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium do not grow and flower well with 100% ammonium (NH4-N); and there are detailed studies on the effects of nitrate (NO3-N) and ammonium ratios on the flowering, but no information about accumulation of other nutrients and the effects of ammonium toxicity on orchids. For this reason, two experiments were carried out with orchids: Phalaenopsis ‘Golden Peoker’ and Dendrobium ‘Valentine’. Six months after acclimatization the plants were transplanted to individual plastic vessels and the treatments consisted of five ratios (%) of nitrate / ammonium (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, 100/0). The sources of NO3-N and NH4-N were calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, respectively. After 12 months treatment, when the plants were...

The proposal of analysis of the social-environmental perception will be developed from the discourse as a constitutive element of reality. The discourse practices and their concretion will be the source of meaning and social-cultural value. Thus, the chosen research method was the qualitative and quantitative case study. In the first part of the text we will recapture a theoretical input by Mary Douglas on risk and culture, as well as on the acceptance of the risks in society. In the second part, we cover a few data of the case of the risks resulting from the tanning industry and on how the society of the “Vale do Rio dos Sinos” relates to these risks.
