Genetic diversity of the Brazilian Creole cattle Pé-duro assessed by microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,Ana Paula Ferreira de; Carvalho,José Herculano de; Miretti,Marcos Mateo; Lara,Maria Aparecida Cassiano; Contel,Eucleia Primo Betioli.
The objective of this study was to describe the genetic diversity and structure of the largest Pé-duro population by assessing variation at ten autosomal microsatellite (STR) loci and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences. The mean expected heterozygosity was 0.755, the mean observed heterozygosity was 0.600 and significant inbreeding coefficient (Fis) and deviations from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in most of analyzed loci demonstrate the impact of inbreeding and homozygosis on this population. A more in-depth genetic analysis could be achieved by expanding the STR list. The analysis of mtDNA provided evidence of ancestral African taurine haplotypes in Pé-duro and excluded maternal Zebuine introgression. In this report, the main Pé-duro population is...

The role of pH on the survival of rumen protozoa in steers R. Bras. Zootec.
Franzolin,Raul; Dehority,Burk A..
In order to study the effect of pH on defaunation in the rumen, four rumen fistulated steers were fed a basal roughage diet for a 4-week adaptation period followed by 17 weeks of feeding with three diets and two feeding levels of high concentrate diet. Rumen outflow fluid rate was evaluated in both ration levels. Rumen protozoa population was monitored weekly and when animals became defaunated, protozoa were reinoculated with rumen contents from one of the faunated steers. At every two weeks, during all the experimental period, rumen pH was measured in all animals at 0, 4, 8 and 12 h after feeding. It was observed an individual animal influence on the establishment and maintenance of the rumen ciliate protozoa population. In all sampling times, mean rumen...

Residual feed intake in beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Arthur,J P.F.; Herd,R.M..
Providing feed is a major input cost in beef production, hence improvements in the efficiency of feed utilisation will reduce the cost of production. Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency, and is defined as the difference between an animal's actual feed intake and its expected feed intake based on its size and growth. It is independent of the level of production, and the lower the value the more efficient the animal is. This paper examines the current state of knowledge on RFI. Available information indicates that postweaning RFI is moderately heritable, and that selection for low RFI will result in progeny that consume less feed for the same level of production as progeny of high RFI cattle. Under ad libitum feeding, RFI is...

Application of the first canonical variable in the evaluation of animal production trials R. Bras. Zootec.
Detmann,Edenio; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Andreotti,Marcelo de Oliveira; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Sousa,Daniel de Paula; Ponciano,Niraldo José; Campos,José Maurício de Souza; Souza,Paulo Marcelo de; Vittori,Andrea.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the inter treatment discrimination according to feed conversion efficiency in several animal performance experiments. The variables investigated were: feed conversion ratio (FCR = intake: production ratio), feed efficiency index (FEI = production: intake ratio) and bio-nutritional index (BNI). The BNI was constructed from the first canonical variable obtained based on the multivariate analysis of variance of the intake and animal production (weight gain or milk production) variables. The results indicated that FCR and FEI reciprocated each other at experimental plot level but did not reciprocate at animal group or treatment level. This fact implicates distortions on the descriptive levels of probability of type I...

Relationship between temperament with performance and meat quality of feedlot steers with predominantly Charolais or Nellore breed R. Bras. Zootec.
Silveira,Isabella Dias Barbosa; Fischer,Vivian; Farinatti,Luis Henrique Ebling; Restle,João; Alves Filho,Dari Celestino; Menezes,Luís Fernando Glasenapp de.
The relation between temperament with performance and meat quality was determined in 79 Charolais × Nellore steers kept in feedlot. Temperament was evaluated according to exit velocity, scale composite score and flight distance four times in the finishing phase, along with body weight, intake and feed conversion measures. Cattle were classified as calm, intermediate and excited according to exit velocity measures at the beginning of the trial. Excited cattle presented larger values for composite score and flight distance. Irrespective of genotype, excited cattle presented lower average daily gain, dry matter intake and worse feed conversion. Temperament categories did not affect most of beef quality traits, except for calm Bos indicus steers, which...

Evaluation of cation-anion diets in calcium metabolism in ruminants R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,Ana Alix Mendes de Almeida; Vitti,Dorinha Miriam Silber Schmidt; Oliveira,Simone Raymundo de; Costa,Patrícia Barcellos; Neres,Marcela Abbado; Hermes,Paula Regina; Cavilhão,Cristiani; Konieczniak,Paula.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB) on the calcium metabolism in male Nellore steers with a mean age of 10 months. Three experimental diets were tested: a cationic diet, a diet consisting of Tifton hay only, and an anionic diet with +15.2, +23.9 and −10.0 mEq/100 g DM of DCAB values in the diet. The anionic diet was calculated as the addition of salts of ammonium chloride and magnesium sulfate. Based on the isotope dilution technique, the negative DCAB value used in this study (−10.0 mEq/100 g DM) does not affect calcium metabolism, especially endogenous losses and true absorption.

EFFECTIVE MICROORGANISMS (EM) AS BIOFEEDERS FOR ANAEROBIC DIGESTION Engenharia na Agricultura
Souza Ferreira, Cecília de Fátima; Gates, Richard Stephen; Batista, Maurílio Duarte; TINOCO, Ilda de Fatima Ferreira.
Soil micro-organisms called Effective Microorganisms (EM) were first cultivated and used in the 1970s. Researches about these cultures have since then demonstrated their effectiveness in improving soil characteristics and as an alternative for accelerating organic matter decomposition in waste treatment systems. The objective of this study was to test whether the addition of EM to substrates incubated in anaerobic digesters would increase the efficiency of waste treatment and biogas production. EM cultures were obtained from bacterial colonies captured within the A-horizon of a Brazilian forest soil. They were left to grow during 15 days on cooked rice contact with the soil; afterwards, the established colonies were separated according to their colors,...

Neonatology in calves: the importance of colostrum MV&Z
Guerra, Guilherme Alves; Dorneles, Elaine Maria Seles; Souza, Fernando Nogueira; Cortez, Adriana; Batista, Camila Freitas; Coelho, Sandra Gesteira; Lage, Andrey Pereira; Della Libera, Alice Maria Melville Paiva; Heinemann, Marcos Bryan.
Neonates are able to respond to infectious agents by their innate and acquired immune responses, however, they are slow, produced in small-scale and have low antibody concentrations. Thus, maternal immunity transference is critical to calf initial survival, since it provides antibodies to the neonate bovine, cells of the immune system, as well as other essential elements to its survival, as nutrients, components of the complement system, growth factors, hormones, cytokines, oligosaccharides, gangliosides, reactive oxygen molecules, acute phase proteins, immunomodulatory factors, enzymes, ribonucleases, nucleotides, polyamines, peptides and proteins with antimicrobial activity, antioxidants and trypsin inhibitors. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in cattle from the Northern and Midwestern regions of Brazil. Serum samples were collected from 1789 animals and tested by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall prevalence of T. gondii was 83.40% (1492/1789). The prevalence rates of T. gondii-seropositive animals observed in the states of Pará, Tocantins and, Mato Grosso were 87.45%, 87.79% and 73.06%, respectively. The detection of high prevalence rates of T. gondii in cattle deserves special attention because they are the main source of high biological value protein for humans. This finding indicates the need for further studies on the risk that these animals may pose to public health.

Mathematical models in ruminant nutrition Scientia Agricola
Tedeschi,Luís Orlindo; Fox,Danny Gene; Sainz,Roberto Daniel; Barioni,Luís Gustavo; Medeiros,Sérgio Raposo de; Boin,Celso.
Mathematical models can be used to improve performance, reduce cost of production, and reduce nutrient excretion by accounting for more of the variation in predicting requirements and feed utilization in each unique production situation. Mathematical models can be classified into five or more categories based on their nature and behavior. Determining the appropriate level of aggregation of equations is a major problem in formulating models. The most critical step is to describe the purpose of the model and then to determine the appropriate mix of empirical and mechanistic representations of physiological functions, given development and evaluation dataset availability, inputs typically available and the benefits versus the risks of use associated with...
