Chemical control of stalk regrowth in glyphosate-resistant transgenic cotton AGRIAMBI
Ferreira,Alexandre C. de B.; Bogiani,Julio C.; Sofiatti,Valdinei; Silva Filho,João L. da.
ABSTRACT Cotton stalk regrowth must be controlled after harvest to ensure the phytosanitary quality and sustainability of cotton farming systems. Mechanical destruction generally does not conform to the no-tillage system, and the control of cotton stalk regrowth by herbicides is little studied in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of herbicides to control glyphosate-resistant transgenic cotton stalk regrowth. The study was conducted in three environments of the Brazilian Cerrado region, two in Santa Helena de Goiás (SHGO), during 2013 and 2014, and one in Luís Eduardo Magalhães (LEM-BA) in 2014. In each of the three environments, the experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block with four replications. Each...

Evaporative cooling for lactating sows under high ambient temperature R. Bras. Zootec.
Kiefer,Charles; Martins,Leandro Pereira; Fantini,Caiki Calepso.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the evaporative cooling of the air at farrowing on the performance of lactating sows under high environmental temperature conditions in the Central West region of Brazil. One hundred and forty-four lactating sows - 46 of first and second farrowing (experiment I) and 98 from the third to eighth farrowing (experiment II) - were used. Sows were distributed in experimental design of randomized blocks consisting of two rooms (with air cooling and control), with the sow as the experimental unit. The average duration of lactation was 21 days. Sows were fed ad libitum with the same lactation diet. In experiment I, the air cooling increased the daily feed intake, reduced the total and percent weight loss, increased the...

Strategies for mitigation of nitrogen environmental impact from swine production R. Bras. Zootec.
Monteiro,Divanildo Outor; Pinheiro,Victor Manuel Carvalho; Mourão,José Luís Medeiros; Rodrigues,Miguel António Machado.
This work presents strategies that can be implemented in order to minimize the environmental impact of swine slurry on soil, water, and air. This reduction can be achieved through decrease in nitrogen excretion and ammonia emissions. The correct feed formulation according to animal requirements, the increase in diet digestibility and improvement in animal performance can reduce nitrogen excretion. The use of additives either in the diet or in the manure as well as some equipment rearrangements can reduce ammonia emission.

What mineral and vitamin levels to recommend in swine diets? R. Bras. Zootec.
Gaudré,Didier; Quiniou,Nathalie.
Minerals, including trace-elements, and vitamins are currently introduced into the pig diet in order to obtain suitable performances for the modern pig genotype bred in confinement. Most of the mineral and vitamin contents of cereals and usual protein compounds are characterized by their poor and variable availability. Supplemental diets are then usually needed. This paper, based on literature data, reviews the pig requirement for minerals and vitamins in order to ensure economic and profitable performance. Recent research has focused on phosphorus due to environmental considerations. The widespread use of microbial phytase has decreased the need for inorganic phosphates. Cereals are particularly deficient in calcium and sodium, consequently limestone and...

Research priorities for grassland science: the need of long term integrated experiments networks R. Bras. Zootec.
Lemaire,G..
Grasslands have to be considered not only as a mean for providing foods for domestic herbivore but also as an important biome of terrestrial biosphere. This function of grasslands as an active component of our environment requires specific studies on the role and impact of this ecosystem on soil erosion and soil quality, quality and quantity of water resources, atmosphere composition and greenhouse gas emission or sequestration, biodiversity dynamics at different scales from field plot to landscape. All these functions have to be evaluated in conjunction with the function of providing animal products for increasing human population. So multifunctionality of grasslands become a new paradigm for grassland science. Environmental and biodiversity outputs...

Mathematical drying kinetics modeling of jackfruit seeds (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Leite,Daniela Dantas de Farias; Queiroz,Alexandre José de Melo; Figueirêdo,Rossana Maria Feitosa de; Lima,Leiliane Silva Lopes.
ABSTRACT Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) is a fruit with pulp rich in carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron and B-complex vitamins. A large amount of waste is generated in the pulp processing, in which the seeds are included. Jackfruit seeds are often consumed after cooking, and may also undergo roasting, milling and incorporation into bakery products. The remaining jackfruit seeds can be germinated as a means to increase its utilization, constituting a process that confers positive biochemical modifications to the nutritional quality. Thus, the objective of this work was to dry the germinated seeds of the jackfruit tree in a convective drier at 55, 65 and 75 °C with drying air velocities of 1.0 and 1.3 m s-1, and adjusting different...

The economic and environmental impact of trade in forest reserve obligations: a simulation analysis of options for dealing with habitat heterogeneity Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Chomitz,Kenneth M.; Thomas,Timothy S.; Brandão,Antônio Salazar P..
A tradeable development rights (TDR) program focusing on biodiversity conservation faces a crucial problem: defining which areas of habitat should be considered equivalent. Restricting the trading scope to a narrow area could boost the range of biodiversity conserved but could increase the opportunity cost of conservation. The issue is relevant to Brazil, where TDR-like policies are emerging. Long-standing laws require each rural property to maintain a legal forest reserve (reserva legal) of at least 20%, but emerging policies allow some tradeability of this obligation. This paper uses a simple, spatially explicit model to simulate a hypothetical state-level program. We find that wider trading scopes drastically reduce landholder costs of complying with...

Forage yield and persistence of red clover progenies in two environments Scientia Agricola
Montardo,Daniel Portella; Dall'Agnol,Miguel; Paim,Nilton Rodrigues.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important temperate legume species, used to lessen the lack of forage during the critical fall-winter period in Rio Grande do Sul, RS, Brazil. However, its utilization has been restricted mainly because of its lack of persistence. This work evaluates the dry matter yield and persistence of red clover half-sib progenies in two physiographic regions of RS: "Depressão Central", in Eldorado do Sul and "Encosta Superior do Nordeste", in Veranópolis. Experiments were carried out for two growing seasons and results were compared to two red clover commercial checks, Qüiñequeli and Estanzuela 116. The region of Veranópolis was more adequate for red clover forage production, enabling better yield and persistence....
