Economic Evidence of Willingness to Pay for the National Animal Identification System in the US AgEcon
Resende Filho, Moises de Andrade; Buhr, Brian L..
This article investigates the willingness to pay for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) in the US. It is assumed that with the NAIS in place, consumers' risk perception about zoonosis, BSE or mad cow and residues in meat may be mitigated. Therefore, food safety indices for beef, pork and poultry summing the number of references to meat safety found in the top fifty English language news articles in circulation in the US have been constructed. These indices were incorporated in generalized almost ideal demand systems to estimate the effect of those food safety scares on the demand for meat in the US. It has been found that food safety impacts upon the final demand for meat in the US are small and do not show lagged effects. Using the preferred...

Buyer and Seller Responses to an Adverse Food Safety Event: The Case of Frozen Salmon in Alberta AgEcon
Maynard, Leigh J.; Saghaian, Sayed H.; Nickoloff, Megan.
Fish is a low-fat protein source high in omega-3 fatty acids, but in 2004 consumers also heard that farmed salmon had high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). This research evaluated how Canadian consumers and processors reacted to the conflicting health messages. Demand estimates and time-series analysis of 2001-2006 frozen meat scanner data in Alberta, Canada show a significant drop in salmon expenditure share following the PCB finding. The industry responded by launching low-priced wild salmon products, which contributed to significant demand expansion. The analysis illustrates how a food safety threat was averted and even served as a catalyst for growth.

Economic Impacts of Regionalization of a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Outbreak in the United States AgEcon
Paarlberg, Philip L.; Seitzinger, Ann Hillberg; Lee, John G..
This analysis examines the economic impact of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and the consequences of regionalization. The results suggest that an outbreak would have serious economic effects. Depending on the regionalization scenario, returns to capital and management in the poultry meat and egg sectors would fall between $602 million and $853 million dollars over 16 quarters. Consumers of poultry meat lose $900 million in consumer surplus in the first four quarters, a decline of 10.7%. Egg consumer surplus falls 17.1%. Regionalization lowers the economic welfare losses for producers because it dampens the export loss.

Would Subsidizing a Food Pathogen Vaccine Upset the Food Policy Applecart AgEcon
Marette, Stephan; Roe, Brian E.; Teisl, Mario F..
Vaccines against several common foodborne pathogens are being developed and could substantially alter the policy tools available to address foodborne illness. However, little analysis is available to suggest how social welfare would be affected by these new vaccines. To address this void, we use stated preference data to estimate consumer willingness to pay (WTP) for food safety vaccines and then simulate the welfare impacts on related commodity markets of subsidizing consumer purchases of the vaccine within a partial equilibrium framework. To obtain consumer demand for the vaccine from the stated preference data, we simultaneously estimate model parameters in an econometrically coherent manner that recognizes the recursive nature of responses to...

ASSESSING KOSOVO'S HORTICULTURAL POTENTIAL - THE MARKET FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ON THE BALKANS AgEcon
Fischer, Christian.
SUMMARY Kosovo had been a net exporter – at least of some – fruit and vegetables in the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia before the civil war. Current reconstruction efforts therefore focus on restoring the past horticultural potential of the now independent province. This paper analyses the competitiveness of the Kosovar fruit and vegetable sector. By calculating average net trade flows during 1996-2000 for more than 20 individual fruit and vegetables and seven ag-gregates, demand potentials for the Balkan regional market are identified for potatoes, lettuce, garlic, dried beans and pears. In addition, average export unit values are calculated as price proxies in order to assess export price competitiveness in the region. While demand potentials for...

The Value of Terroir: Hedonic Estimation of Vineyard Sale Prices AgEcon
Cross, Robin M.; Plantinga, Andrew J.; Stavins, Robert N..
We examine the value of terroir, which refers to the special characteristics of a place that impart unique qualities to the wine produced. We do this by conducting a hedonic analysis of vineyard sales in the Willamette Valley of Oregon to ascertain whether site attributes, such as slope, aspect, elevation, and soil types, or designated appellations are more important determinants of price. We find that prices are strongly determined by sub-AVA appellation designations, but not by specific site attributes. These results indicate that the concept of terroir matters economically, although the reality of terroir – as proxied for by locational attributes – is not significant.

Effects of Market and Policy Shocks on the Canadian and U.S. Cattle and Beef Industries AgEcon
Twine, Edgar; Rude, James.
The paper examines the impact of four exogenous shocks – exchange rate appreciation, feed price escalation, mandatory country of origin labeling, and economic recession – on the Canadian and U.S. beef cattle industries using a multi-market partial equilibrium model. Impacts on the U.S. industry are found to be relatively small compared to those on the Canadian industry. Country of origin labeling, and feed price escalation account for the largest decline in the welfare of Canadian cattle producers.

Ley de precio único en el mercado español del aceite de oliva AgEcon
Roldan Casas, Jose Angel; Dios-Palomares, Rafaela.
SUMMARY: The aim of this paper is the study of long-run market integration of olive oil in Spain and the testing of the Law of One Price (LOP) in this...

Estimation of Demand Elasticity for Food Commodities in India AgEcon
Kumar, Praduman; Kumar, Anjani; Parappurathu, Shinoj; Raju, S.S..
The food demand in India has been examined in the context of a structural shift in the dietary pattern of its population. The results have reinforced the hypothesis of a significant diversification in the dietary pattern of households in recent years and has found stark differences in the consumption pattern across different income quartiles. The food demand behaviour has been explained using a set of demand elasticities corresponding to major food commodities. The demand elasticities have been estimated using multi-stage budgeting with QUAIDS model and another alternative model, FCDS. The study has revealed that the estimated income elasticities vary across income classes and are lowest for cereals group and highest for horticultural and livestock...

Dynamics of Price Transmission in the Presence of a Major Food Safety Shock: Impact of H5N1 Avian Influenza on the Turkish Poultry Sector AgEcon
Saghaian, Sayed H.; Ozertan, Gokhan; Spaulding, Aslihan D..
This article addresses the dynamic impact of the 2005 H5N1 avian influenza outbreak on the Turkish poultry sector. Contemporary time-series analyses with historical decomposition graphs are used to address differences in monthly price adjustments between market levels along the Turkish poultry supply channel. The empirical results show that price adjustments are asymmetric with respect to both speed and magnitude along the marketing channel. Results also reveal a differential impact of the exogenous shock on producers and retailers. The findings have critical efficiency and equity implications for the supply-chain participants.

EU-wide Distributional Effects of EU Direct Payments Harmonization analyzed with CAPRI AgEcon
Gocht, Alexander; Britz, Wolfgang; Ciaian, Pavel; Gomez y Paloma, Sergio.
We argue in this paper that available econometric estimates of farmers’ risk aversion do not measure true farmers’ preferences towards risky outcomes. Available analyses are mostly of static nature and indeed measure the parameters of the synthetic optimal value function rather than the deep parameters of the utility functions. We derive analytical and empirical results in a simple dynamic and stochastic framework showing that that there is not a simple relationship between utility functions and value functions when agents have many decision variables. In particular we find that the value function does not necessarily exhibit DARA when the instantaneous utility function satisfies DARA and conversely. We recommend performing dynamic econometric estimation...

Estimation of supply response in CAPRI AgEcon
Jansson, Torbjorn.
The primary objective of this paper is to estimate behavioural parameters of the quadratic regional supply models in the modelling system CAPRI, using the time series data in the CAPRI database. A secondary objective is to replace the constant yields of the original model by functions that depend on input use. Due to lack of statistical robustness, the second objective is not achieved, thus yields remain constant. A Bayesian highest posterior density estimator is developed to address the primary objective. After discarding regions with insufficient data, parameters for up to 23 crop production activities with related inputs, outputs, prices and behavioural functions are estimated for 165 regions in EU-15. The results are systematically compared to the...

World Food Needs and the Optimal Allocations of Lands AgEcon
Hubert, Marie-Helene; Moreaux, Michel.
In order to assess the future world food demand/supply balance for the next century, in relation to the land uses, we develop a model in which the society has to supply two types of food demand, namely, processed crop products and meat and dairy products. From the supply side, the society can resort to different classes of land. Each class of land can be allocated wholly or partially either to crop cultivation or to pasture or last to be lain fallow. Primary crop production can be transformed either into processed crop products to satisfy final needs, or into intermediate livestock products used as inputs within the intensive industrial farming system. The livestock products can also be obtained from the extensive grazing system. The increase in world...
