Determinants of Profitability Performance: An Analysis of Class I Railroads in the United States AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Shaik, Saleem; Myles, Albert E.; Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the impact of internal and external variables on the net profit margins of Class I railroads for the period 1996-2009. Parameter coefficients show that market concentration had a significant and negative impact on the net profit margins of the carriers.

The Economic impact of Repealing Mississippi's Grocery Tax AgEcon
Myles, Albert E.; Allen, Albert J.; Shaik, Saleem.
Results from the analyses indicate that repealing the 7 percent grocery tax would produce modest gains in grocery sales but major increases in the purchases of other goods and services. Revenues from the sale of additional groceries would be exempt from taxes, thus producing only employment and labor income. With the state loosing almost $202 million in tax revenues, it is not clear if the gains in employment would be enough to offset the revenue losses.

FINANCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF REFRIGERATED FOOD PRODUCTS TRUCKING FIRMS IN THE U.S. AgEcon
Quesada, Alina M.; Allen, Albert J.; Reeves, Jeanne M..
This study provides an overview of the financial characteristics of U. S. refrigerated food products trucking firms as a group and by regions. The analytical tools used for evaluating the financial assessment of the industry were several commonly used liquidity, profitability, and solvency ratios. One of the results reveals that the pre-tax income-to-gross revenue ratio, a measure of profitability, for the firms as a group averaged 0.01. This value means that one-cent of every dollar earned in services ("sales") was available to pay taxes and distribute profits.

IMPACT OF STRATEGIC CHANGES ON THE PERFORMANCE OF TRUCKING FIRMS IN THE AGRICULTURAL COMMODITY TRANSPORTATION MARKET AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Wang, Haiyuan; Muhammad, Safdar; Mumma, Gerald A.; Chowdhury, A.A. Farhad.
Econometric models were developed to estimate factors that influence strategic changes and evaluate the impacts that strategic changes will have on the subsequent performance of agricultural commodity trucking firms. Results reveal that GDP and change in firm size will have positive impacts on strategic changes made by firms.

AN ANALYSIS OF MAJOR POULTRY PRODUCTS TRADERS IN WORLD MARKETS AgEcon
Vicente, Mauricio V.; Allen, Albert J.; Reeves, Jeanne M..
This study evaluates the competitiveness of the United States and other major exporters of poultry products in world markets. The analytical technique used to measure the competitiveness of the major traders was the shift-share analysis model. One of the results from this study reveals that chicken meat exports from the U.S. relative to the countries in the world increased by 1,613,861 metric tons in time period 1985-95.

A PRELIMINARY ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF ROUNDUP READY SOYBEANS IN MISSISSIPPI AgEcon
Couvillion, Warren C.; Kari, Fatimah; Hudson, Darren; Allen, Albert J..
The advent of genetically altered seed has had a revolutionary effect on the cotton, soybean, and corn seed industries. The basic premise for the use of these seed are to reduce costs through lower applications of chemicals and savings on trips through the field, thus, lowering production costs. Seed companies, however, charge a premium and a fee for use of the seed. This paper compares the costs associated with conventional and roundup ready soybeans. Data were collected from the ACost of Production@ survey of Mississippi producers that is administered by Mississippi State University through the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The survey is a random sample of producers fields that allows for a derivation of the cost of production for each field....

The Structure Performance Hypothesis and The Efficient Structure Performance Hypothesis-Revisited: The Case of Agribusiness Commodity and Food Products Truck Carriers in the South AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Shaik, Saleem; Myles, Albert E.; Muhammad, Safdar.
Two competing hypotheses on market structure and performance of firms are the traditional structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm and the efficiency structure hypothesis. This paper reveals the profits made by firms in the trucking industry were because of greater efficiencies than their competitors and not because of collusive activities.

BSE and the US Economy: Input-Output Model Perspective AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Kebede, Ellene; Ofori-Boadu, Victor; Allen, Albert J..
The potential impact of a BSE outbreak on the US economy is modeled in input-output setting using 2002 US IMPLAN data. An outbreak of BSE would hurt the US beef industry, other agriculturally-related industry, and the rest of the economy as a whole. The worse effects occur in the beef cattle and farming industries. Generally, the economy of every county would be hurt given the fact that cattle are produced in all the 50 states. But it is apparent that the damage would be substantial in those regions and households which already suffer the severest economic damage.

IMPACTS OF CORN AND SOYBEAN MEAL PRICE CHANGES ON THE DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF U.S. BROILERS AgEcon
Pothidee, Ajchara; Allen, Albert J.; Hudson, Darren.
This study examined factors that affected the prices of corn and soybean meal and the impact of these prices on market demand and supply for U.S. broilers. An econometric model consisting of four structural equations and one identity was formulated and estimated using quarterly data from 1976 to 1996. One of the results reveals that soybean meal price flexibilities with respect to soybean prices were highly elastic in both the short and long run. This means that changes in soybean prices have a relatively large effect on meal price. In contrast, meal price and oil price moved in opposite directions. An increase in oil price encourages an increase in crushing oilseeds, resulting in an increase in both oil and meal supply. In addition, results...

Market Structure Conduct Performance Hypothesis Revisited Using Stochastic Frontier Efficiency Analysis AgEcon
Shaik, Saleem; Allen, Albert J.; Edwards, Seanicaa; Harris, James.
Stochastic frontier analysis, which is used to estimate the technical efficiency, is extended to examine the market structure, conduct and performance hypothesis for the U.S. trucking industry. The technical efficiency measure takes into account not only the relationship between inputs used in the production of output but also simultaneously examine the importance of market structure conduct factors on the performance of the firm. An empirical application to U.S. trucking carriers over the period 1994-2003 is examined. Results reveal that the variables average haul, average load, debt-to-equity and market concentration significantly affected technical efficiency. Capital, fixed and variable input variables were significant in the production function...

Evaluating the Impact of Changing Mississippi’s Tobacco Tax AgEcon
Myles, Albert E.; Allen, Albert J..
A multiple regression was performed on 37 years of data to determine the impact of raising the tobacco tax on cigarettes by $.24 per pack on cigarette sales in Mississippi. The t-statistic for the slope was significant at the .05 critical alpha level, t(29) =1.69 and p=.05. Thus, we conclude that there is a positive significant relationship between taxes and sales volume. Further, about 91 of the variability in sales volume could be explained by the demand model.

Stochastic Frontier Efficiency Analysis of Agribusiness Trucking Companies AgEcon
Allen, Albert J.; Fuentes, Porfirio A.; Shaik, Saleem.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the technical efficiency of trucking carriers on a national basis by commodity groups for the year 2001. In this analysis, the efficiency measures are estimated using stochastic frontier analysis. Results reveal efficiency measures of trucking carriers vary by the commodity transported but might not be statistically significant in this analysis
