SPATIAL VARIABILITY AND VITALITY OF EPIGEOUS TERMITE MOUNDS IN PASTURES OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Sandra Santana; Ceddia,Marcos Bacis; Zuchello,Fernando; Aquino,Adriana Maria de; Mercante,Fábio Martins; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Urquiaga,Segundo; Martius,Christopher; Boddey,Robert Michael.
Epigeous termite mounds are frequently observed in pasture areas, but the processes regulating their population dynamics are poorly known. This study evaluated epigeous termite mounds in cultivated grasslands used as pastures, assessing their spatial distribution by means of geostatistics and evaluating their vitality. The study was conducted in the Cerrado biome in the municipality of Rio Brilhante, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In two pasture areas (Pasture 1 and Pasture 2), epigeous mounds (nests) were georeferenced and analyzed for height, circumference and vitality (inhabited or not). The area occupied by the mounds was calculated and termite specimens were collected for taxonomic identification. The spatial distribution pattern of the mounds was...

Soil carbon and nitrogen in pasture soil reforested with eucalyptus and guachapele Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Balieiro,Fabiano de Carvalho; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Resende,Alexander Silva de; Franco,Avílio Antonio.
In spite of the normally low content of organic matter found in sandy soils, it is responsible for almost the totality of cation exchange capacity (CEC), water storage and availability of plant nutrients. It is therefore important to evaluate the impact of alternative forest exploitation on the improvement of soil C and N accumulation on these soils. This study compared pure and mixed plantations of Eucalyptus grandis and Pseudosamanea guachapele, a N2-fixing leguminous tree, in relation to their effects on soil C and N stocks. The studied Planosol area had formerly been covered by Panicum maximum pasture for at least ten years without any fertilizer addition. To estimate C and N contents, the soil was sampled (at depths of 0-2.5; 2.5-5.0; 5.0-7.5;...

Seeds with high molybdenum concentration improved growth and nitrogen acquisition of rhizobium-inoculated and nitrogen-fertilized common bean plants Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida,Fernanda Fátima Delgado; Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues.
Seeds of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) with high molybdenum (Mo) concentration can supply Mo plant demands, but to date no studies have concomitantly evaluated the effects of Mo-enriched seeds on plants inoculated with rhizobia or treated with N fertilizer. This work evaluated the effects of seed Mo on growth and N acquisition of bean plants fertilized either by symbiotic N or mineral N, by measuring the activities of nitrogenase and nitrate reductase and the contribution of biological N2 fixation at different growth stages. Seeds enriched or not with Mo were sown with two N sources (inoculated with rhizobia or fertilized with N), in pots with 10 kg of soil. In experiment 1, an additional treatment consisted of Mo-enriched seeds with Mo applied to the...

Macedo,Robert; Tarré,Ricardo Martinez; Ferreira,Elvino; Rezende,Claudia de Paula; Pereira,José Marques; Cadisch,Georg; Rouws,Janaina Ribeiro Costa; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Urquiaga,Segundo; Boddey,Robert Michael.
A key contribution to study the cycling of nutrients in soil/plant/animal systems is the evaluation of the consumption of forage and their nutrients by cattle. The objective of this study was to test techniques to evaluate faecal production, in vitro digestibility, forage consumption and the proportion of legume in the acquired diet. Five Zebu steer calves were confined and fed five diets of different combinations of Brachiaria dictyoneura and Desmodium ovalifolium. All quantities of faeces were collected per animal and these values were found to compare favourably with those derived from using the chromium oxide technique. In vitro digestibility ranged from 7 to 10% higher than the actual in vivo digestibility. Faecal samples from steers fed with diets...

Growth rate and nutritional status of an organic coffee cropping system Scientia Agricola
Ricci,Marta dos Santos Freire; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Miranda,Simone Cordeiro de; Oliveira,Fabio Freire de.
In view of the low N concentration in organic fertilizers, it is necessary to use high rates of such fertilizers to attend coffee crop requirements. Hence, N is the most limiting nutrient for organic coffee production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) organic fertilization on the growth and nutritional status of coffee cultivars, as well as to quantify plant biomass and N input derived from biological nitrogen fixation, and their effect on soil chemical characteristics. The experiment consisted of six coffee (Coffea arabica) cultivars intercropped with and without sunn hemp sown in November 2001 and pruned at mid-height 76 days later. At 175 days, the standing biomass of the legume was cut, measuring...

Bradyrhizobium strain and the 15N natural abundance quantification of biological N2 fixation in soybean Scientia Agricola
Guimarães,Ana Paula; Morais,Rafael Fiusa de; Urquiaga,Segundo; Boddey,Robert Michael; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues.
In commercial plantations of soybean in both the Southern and the Cerrado regions, contributions from biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) are generally proportionately high. When using the 15N natural abundance technique to quantify BNF inputs, it is essential to determine, with accuracy, the 15N abundance of the N derived from BNF (the 'B' value). This study aimed to determine the effect of four recommended strains of Bradyrhizobium spp. (two B. japonicum and two B. elkanii) on the 'B' value of soybean grown in pots in an open field using an equation based on the determination of δ15N natural abundance in a non-labelled soil, and estimate of the contribution of BNF derived from the use of 15N-isotope dilution in soils enriched with 15N. To evaluate N2...

Agronomic performance of green cane fertilized with ammonium sulfate in a coastal tableland soil Bragantia
Oliveira,Ana Paula Pessim; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Anjos,Lúcia Helena Cunha dos; Lima,Eduardo; Zonta,Everaldo; Pereira,Willian; Soares,Paula Fernanda Chaves.
ABSTRACT The recent approach of eliminating the usage of fire for sugarcane harvesting resulted in managing the crop on a trashblanketed soil, to which a proper recommendation of N fertilization is lacking, a problem that remains in the coastal tablelands of the Espírito Santo State, Brazil. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of increasing N rates on stalk and sugar yields and the N use efficiency by the crop. The experimental area planted with sugarcane, at the first ratoon, is located in Linhares, Espírito Santo State. The treatments consisted of N rates varying from 80 to 160 kg N∙ha−1 as ammonium sulphate, and a control without N, in a completely randomized blocks experimental design. Stalk yield increased with the N rate, and fitting the...

Ramalho,Israel Oliveira; Rezende,Claudia de Paula; Pereira,José Marques; Macedo,Robert de Oliveira; Santos,Camila Almeida dos; Monteiro,Rafael Cassador; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Carvalho,Isabel das Neves Oiticica de; Urquiaga,Segundo; Boddey,Robert Michael.
ABSTRACT: The objectives of this study were to determine the rates of plant litter deposition and decomposition in Marandu pastures (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu) under a) three forms of nitrogen (N) supply, b) at different stages of rotational grazing and c) to compare the single-exponential decay constant (‘k’) derived from litterbags with values derived from estimates of deposited and existing litter (DEL technique). The three N supply treatments were: without or with N fertilization (zero or 150 kg N ha-1 yr-1) or with the legume Desmodium ovalifolium. There were no significant differences (p<0.05) between existing litter and rates of litter deposition and decomposition between the three N supply treatments. The litter decomposition rate was...

Natural abundance of 15N of N derived from the atmosphere by different strains of Bradyrhizobium in symbiosis with soybean plants Ciência Rural
Araujo,Karla Emanuelle Campos; Torres Júnior,Carlos Vergara; Guimarães,Ana Paula; Silva,Mara Alexandre da; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Urquiaga,Segundo; Boddey,Robert Michael.
ABSTRACT: To quantify the BNF contribution to legumes using the 15N natural abundance technique, it is important to know the abundance of 15N of the plants grown entirely dependent on BNF (value ‘B’). The aim of the study was to determine the 15N natural abundance of N2 fixed by different Bradyrhizobium strains in symbiosis with one soybean cultivar. Treatments consisted of soybean plants cultivated with and without inoculation with ten Bradyrhizobium strains, in five replicates planted in Leonard jars in a sand/vermiculite mixture. Plants were harvested after 46 days. The ‘B’ values of the aerial tissue (‘Bs’) ranged from -2.6 to -3.9 ‰. There was a tendency for the ‘Bs’ values of plants inoculated with strains of B. elkanii to be more negative than...
