Dieta do tucunaré-amarelo Cichla monoculus (Bloch & Schneider) (Osteichthyes, Cichlidae), no Reservatório de Lajes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Santos,Luciano Neves dos; Gonzalez,Alejandra Filippo; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The diet of Cichla monoculus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) in Lajes's Reservoir, a major impoundment in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, was assessed, from fishes collected in 1994,1996 and 1999/2000. Gut contents in individuals was analyzed by the index of relative importance (IRI) which deals with numerical, gravimetrical and frequency of occurrence. Cichla monoculus showed a strong piscivorous habits feeding on Cichlidae, Characidae and Pimelodidae, in decreasing order of importance, with a remarkable cannibalism on young-of-the-year. Others minor items in the diet were Macrobrachium sp. and Odonata. Changes in feeding composition varied with reservoir's zones and seasons, with higher diversity in Autumn and peaks of cannibalism in lower zone during...

Indicadores reprodutivos de Parauchenipterus striatulus (Steindachner) (Pisces, Auchenipteridae) na Represa de Ribeirão das Lajes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Duarte,Silvana; Goldberg,Rubens Sterental; Fichberg,Liana.
Parauchenipterus striatulus is a representative of the freshwater catfish with wide distribution in the South America region. Despite of being a very abundant fish in rivers and reservoirs of this region, little is known about its biology and ecology. In Ribeirão das Lajes reservoir (22º42'S - 22º50'S, 43º53'- 44º05' W, Rio de Janeiro), the Rio de Janeiro state's largest hydroelectric reservoir, this species is very abundant, representing about 40% of the total experimental fish catches using gill nets. This paper aims to assess aspects of the reproductive cycle of this species describing the gonadal stages, gonadosomatic index, weight-length relationship and condition factor. Fish sampling were carried out bi-monthly, between April 1996 and May 1997. Gill...

Distribuição, abundância relativa e movimentos sazonais de bagres marinhos (Siluriformes, Ariidae) no estuário da Lagoa dos Patos (RS), Brasil Zoologia
Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
Three ariid fish, Netuma barba, Netuma planifrons and Genidens genidens, use the estuary of the Patos Lagoon (32ºS), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, as a nursery and feeding ground in various stages of their life history. A comparative study was made of the temporal and spatial distribution and relative abundance. Seasonal movements were interpreted on the basis of distribution and abundance of the young of these coexisting sea catfishe. Monthly otter trawl samples were made between November, 1979 and April, 1983. Temperature, salinities and dissolved oxygen contents were taken at each of the 674 sample stations. All three species were caught in ample temperature (12,1 to 26,3ºC), salinity (0,3 to 35,5‰) and dissolved oxygen (4,7 to 11,5 mg/l) ranges. However,...

Size-related and seasonal changes in the diet of the non-native Cichla kelberi Kullander & Ferreira, 2006 in a lowland reservoir in the southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Mendonça,Helaine Silva; Santos,Alexandre Clistenes Alcântara; Martins,Mariana Marques; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
Abstract: We examined size-related and seasonal changes in the diet of the peacock bass Cichla kelberi in a tropical lowland reservoir in southeastern Brazil over three hydro-climatic seasons: summer (high rainfall and temperature), winter (low rainfall and temperature), and late spring (increasing rainfall and temperature) during two years (2006-2007). The tested hypothesis is that this non-native predator fish changes diet during the subadult and adult phases and among seasons to adapt in new colonized environment. Fishes of the families Clupeidae (Platanichthys platana), Characidae (Astyanax spp.) and Cichlidae (Cichla kelberi) were the most important food items, followed by insects of the order Odonata. Cannibalism was also recorded for the largest...

Uso da taxocenose de peixes como indicadora de degradação ambiental no rio Paraíba do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil BABT
Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
An adaptation of index of biotic integrity (IBI) was performed for the first time in Brazil at the Rio Paraíba do Sul, between Barra Mansa and Barra do Piraí, a very important extent of this river because of the high pollution levels, and for being the main abstraction source of Rio de Janeiro city water supply. A monthly standardised sampling programme, from March-1995 to February-1996, was carried out at four sites. Seines, casting nets and net trays were used for catching fishes. IBI was obtained by integrating 12 ecological and environmental attributes of fish taxocene, populations, and individual organisms to assess biological integrity based in Species Composition, Trophic Structure and Fish Condition. Overall, water quality was classified between...

Enzymatic Activity in the Gastrointestinal Tract of Pimelodus maculatus (Teleostei, Siluriformes) in Two Neotropical Reservoirs with Different Trophic Conditions BABT
Duarte,Silvana; Bemquerer,Marcelo; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
Enzymatic activities for digestion of proteins and carbohydrates were compared among three organs of the digestive system of Pimelodus maculatus in two reservoirs with different trophic conditions during the winter of 2006. The aim was to test the hypothesis that enzymatic activity for the digestion of proteins and carbohydrates differed among organs and that such activities differ between the trophic state of the environment. Enzymatic activities were determined through the assays of specificity for trypsin, chymotrypsin and β-glucosidase enzymes. The intestine had higher trypsin-like enzymatic activities compared to the stomach and liver. The highest β-glucosidase activity was found in the liver compared to the stomach and intestine in the oligotrophic...

Morphology of gonads, maturity and spawning season of Loricariichthys spixii (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) in a Subtropical Reservoir BABT
Duarte,Silvana; Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Sales,Armando; Bazzoli,Nilo.
The gonad morphology and spawning season of Loricariichthys spixii in Lajes reservoir were described based on 175 males and 613 females. Cells from the spermatogenic lineage were divided in four phases: spermatogonia (primary and secondary), spermatocytes (primary and secondary), spermatids and spermatozoa, and the cells from the ovocitarian lineage were divided in four phases: primary oocytes (O1), previtellogenic oocytes (O2), cortical vesicle oocytes (O3) and yolk globules or vitellogenic (O4). Five gonadal stages were described for the males/females according to oocytes and spermatogenic lineage cells distribution: resting (1); initial maturation (2a); advanced maturation (2b); partially spent/spawned (4a); totally spent/spawned (4b). Spawning was...

Assessing of biotic integrity of the fish community in a heavily impacted segment of a tropical river in Brazil BABT
Pinto,Benjamin Carvalho Teixeira; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
A index of biotic integrity (IBI) was applied to assess the ecological health at seven sites of ca. 338 km extension of the Paraíba do Sul river, in bracketing a large urban-industrial complex. The aim was to evaluate the index response to changes in environmental quality during two seasons (winter/dry versus. summer/wet). Eight metrics were selected to IBI in three categories: 1) species richness and habitat composition; 2) indicator species; and 3) trophic structure. The IBI, based on the least impacted regional condition, showed the highest value at the most upstream site (Queluz=km 0) - Acceptable, then decreasing downstream and reaching the lowest record at Volta Redonda (km 125) - Impacted; afterwards there was an increasing quality toward the most...

Gram-negative intestinal indigenous microbiota from two Siluriform fishes in a tropical reservoir BJM
Duarte,Silvana; Silva,Flávia Cristina de Paula e; Zauli,Danielle Alves Gomes; Nicoli,Jacques Robert; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The Gram-negative intestinal microbiota of Hypostomus auroguttatus and Pimelodus maculatus, a detritivorous and an omnivorous fish species, respectively, were compared between fishes from the reservoir and the stretch of the river below the dam of the Funil hydroelectric plant, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four selective culture media were used under aerobic and two under anaerobic conditions. The omnivorous species had microbiota with higher population levels compared to the detritivorous species. The number of morphotypes and population levels of total bacteria, vibrio and Bacteroides tended to be higher in summer and autumn in the reservoir, and not different in the river. The number of morphotypes of enterobacteria and total bacteria were higher in the...
