A methology for the stocks assessments of cultivated oysters among along the French Atlantic coasts ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre; Bodoy, Alain; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Dreno, Jean-paul; Heral, Maurice; Maurer, Daniele; Prou, Jean.
An assessment of the reared stocks of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas ) has been recently conducted on the major French areas of molluscs culture. The methodology proposed included both estimates of densities obtained by subsampling in the field, and aerial photographs which covered the cultivated, intertidal area. The size and the number of samples were designed to reach a precision of 10% on the final assessment in each area. The field work consisted in weighing and counting the oyster in unit areas of 0.5 m2 for the bottom culture or in trays or bags, for the off bottom technique. These results give a better knowledge of the technique evolution and of the general structures in the cultivated areas.

Site n°5. The Pertuis Breton (Bay of Biscay) France ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Martin, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Haubois, Anne-gaelle; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
1.This report presents the results of a field study conducted in the ECASA test site nOS in the Pertuis Breton, France. The site is located on the Atlantic West coasts. It is open to the bay of Biscay, but is slightly protected against westerly winds. The bay has been exploited by intertidal mussels culture for centuries. 2. Within the bay, mussels (Mytilus edulis) are cultivated either by the traditional pole technique, around the bay or on longlines in the centre of the bay. The area occupied by these longline s represents 250 ha, and the resulting annual production is 1 000 tonnes of mussels. The average depth at mid tide is of 13.8 m. The sediment is sandy, with a small fraction of mud. 3. The site is subject to several regular monitoring through the...

Intensive culture of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) in marine ponds. The impact of rearing densities and feeding levels on growth rates and yields ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Haure, Joel; Bodoy, Alain.
Intensive ongrowing (from 28 mm to the commercial size, 35 mm) of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was studied in experimental raceways with a natural bottom of clay. The factors controlled were rearing density (100, 200, and 300 individuals/m2) and food concentration (34.0 and 68.1 µg.1-1 chlorophyll a). Food was produced from a batch culture of Skeletonema costatum in a large volume (50 m3), thanks to the fertile ground and saline water. Best results regarding final size were obtained in the vicinity of the inflow with a densilY of 100 individuals/m2. However it was a density of 300 individuals/m2 which appeared from the following results to be the optimal choice for intensive rearing: the survival rate was 84 %, the final biomass was 4 kg/m2 and...

Mass mortalities of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) during spring 1988 in the Bay of Marennes-Oleron, related to environmental conditions ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Garnier, Jacqueline; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe.
Mass mortalities of oysters were recorded in the South of the Bay of Marennes-Oleron, during spring 1988. The percentages of mortality averaged 50 % and reached up to 90 % in some areas of bottom culture. The losses were estimated to 7 800 tonnes. This paper present the results of the investigations carried out in several fields. Among them, pathological examination revealed that no pathogenic agent or parasitic infestation could be evoked to explain these mortalities. Analyses of pollutants were either negatives, or the concentrations were far below the toxicity levels. Climatological and hydrological observations showed that rainfalls were twice more abundant then the average, for a period of 6 months preceding the mortalities. The salinity was low and...

Bodoy, Alain; Bacher, Cedric; Geairon, Philippe.

Assessments of natural mortality of cultivated oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in the bay of Marennes-Oleron (France) ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain.
The natural mortality of oysters could by considered, in a man controlled ecosystem, as the result of the action of biological factors, and human factors other then the harvest of the population. Such mortalities need to be estimated in order to be used in population dynamics, as a tool for management purposes. ln Marennes-Oleron bay, different ways of estimating the natural mortality are available. Several oyster farms were monitored for assessing growth, mortality and production in rearing conditions. Furthermore, an experimental framework which includes 15 stations gave an appraisal of the same factors under controlled conditions. Finally, another estimate will be soon available by comparin9 the number of recruited oysters, and the number of oyster...

Bodoy, Alain; Plante-cuny, Marie-reine.

Modeling the impact of oyster culture on a mudflat food web in Marennes-Oleron Bay (France) ArchiMer
Leguerrier, D; Niquil, Nathalie; Petiau, A; Bodoy, Alain.
We used a carbon-based food web model to investigate the effects of oyster cultivation on the ecosystem of an intertidal mudflat. A previously published food web model of a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France, was updated with revised parameters, and a realistic surface area and density of existing oyster cultures on the mudflat. We developed 2 hypothetical scenarios to estimate the impact of oyster cultivation on the food web structure of the ecosystem: one with no oysters, the other with a doubled area devoted to cultivated oysters in the bay. Oysters are direct trophic competitors of other filter feeders, and their presence modifies benthic-pelagic coupling by forcing a shift from pelagic consumers to benthic consumers. Increasing the surface area of...

Bodoy, Alain; Masse, H..
Some parameters measuring the production of organic matter, in field conditions, by a population of the bivalve mollusc Donax trunculus have been studied. Those studies which are easily done when the population is composed of long lived species become difficult in Mediterranean Sea where the populations are instable and composed of short-lived species. A large qualitative sample has been made every month on which the interpretation of cohort succession has been done using the graphical method of CASSIE (1954) which is an useful mean to determine the modal class-size. The monthly values of the weight/size relationship, during a year, show important fluctuations indicating that size increment, tissue weight increment, gamet production and release are often...

Gametogenic cycle and reproductive effort of the tropical blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (Bivalvia : Pteriidae), cultivated in Takapoto atoll (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Gangnery, Aline; Tiapari, Jerome; Lagarde, Franck; Garnier, Matthieu; Bodoy, Alain.
The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity,...

Diversification des productions conchylicoles en Poitou-Charentes. L'élevage du pétoncle noir Chramys Varias ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Garnier, Jacqueline; Heurtebise, Serge; Nollet, V.; Chagot, Dominique.

Bodoy, Alain; Prou, Jean; Berthome, Jean-paul.
Among the different condition indices, some of them were compared on a population of the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The follow-up of experimental racks was performed monthly during four years. The use of dry weight in condition indices gave a more precise and more reliable representation for the condition of the oysters than the fresh weight. The sensitivity of these indices, which corresponds to their ability in revealing small changes in the physiological condition, was calculated for each indice. Those exhibiting the best sensitivity were ranked as follow: dry weight on the difference between total weight and shell weight, dry weight on intervalve volume. Other indices including the ratio between dry weight and various assessments of the volume...
