Alteration, fractional crystallization, partial melting, mantle properties from trace elements in basalts recovered in the north atlantic ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Joron, Jean-louis; Treuil, Michel.
.-Alkali metals prove to be very sensitive to alteration process even if this process is moderate. It is very difficult to use these elements to trace magmatic processes since their concentration may Vary within an homogeneous "unaltered" unit. From all the basaltic units investigated, a classification of "low partition coefficient" elements is presented (Sc, Ti, V, Y, Zr, Nb, La-Tb , Hf, Ta, Th) . The incompatible elements ratios (Y/Tb, Zr/Hf, Nb/Ta) are constant in the samples studied and are nearly equal to the same ratios in chondrites. This is consistent with the existence of an homogeneous primordial mantle at the scale of the North Atlantic, compatible with a chondritic composition of the earth. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Mid-Atlantic Ridge : zero-age geochemical variations between Azores and 22°N ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Treuil, M..
The MAPCO cruise of RV J. Charcot sampled zero-age basalts along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from the Azores Triple Junction to 24 N. Preliminary shipboard geochemical analyses together with earlier data show that some trace elements are not randomly distribued along the ridge. The latitude of the Haves transform delineate two regions of rare earth element distribution : north from Hayes, is flat to light rare (or equivalent) enriched : south from Hayes, is light rare earth (or equivalent) depleted. These findings indicate large scale heterogeneity of the upper mantle. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Trace elements : fractional crystallization and partial melting process, heterogeneity of upper mantle material ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Cambon, Pierre; Joron, J.; Treuil, M..
From a study of trace elements, including first transition series elements and low parition coefficient elements or so-called hygromagmatophyle elements (Treuil and Varet, 1973 ; Treuil and Joron, 1976), we will try to establish the three fundamental parameters (mantle material, partial melting, and crystallization) which influence the formation of basalts recovered during Leg 46. Data are presented in connection with shipboard study ; a tentative interpretation is given taking into account our present knowledge of the behavior of trace elements during magmatic processes and comparing the results of FAMOUS, Leg 37 and Leg 45. We ask the reader to look at our Leg 45 report (Bougault. et al., 1978) to gain information about analytical procedures and...

Découverte par submersible de sulfures polymétalliques massifs sur la dorsale du Pacifique oriental, par 21°N (projet "Rita") ArchiMer
Francheteau, Jean; Needman, David; Choukroune, Pierre; Juteau, Thierry; Seguret, Michel; Ballard, Robert D.; Fox, Jeffery; Normark, William; Carranza, Arturo; Cordoba, Diego; Guerrero, José; Rangin, Claude; Bougault, Henri; Cambon, Pierre; Hekinian, Roger.
Massive zinc, copper and iron sulfide ore deposits have been found at the axis of the East Pacific Rise. Although several investigators had predicted their presence on the deep-ocean floor, there was no supporting observational evidence. The East Pacific Rise deposits represent an appealing modern analogue of Cyprustype ores associated with ophiolitic rocks on land. They contain up to about 29% zinc metal and up to at least nearly 3% metallic copper. Their discovery will provide a new focus for deep-sea exploration, leading to new assessments of the concentration of noble metals in the upper layers of the oceanic crust. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Tholeiites, basaltic andesites, and andesites from leg 60 sites : geochemistry, mineralogy, and low partition coefficient elements ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Maury, R.c.; El Azzouzi, M.; Joron, J.l.; Cotten, J.; Treuil, M..
This chapter presents major oxide and trace element determinations of igneous whole-rock compositions from sites drilled during Leg 60 and electron microprobe mineral and glass analyses of samples from Sites 454 and 458. Interarc basin basalts from the Mariana Trough (Sites 454 and 456) are similar in all respects to depleted mid-ocean ridge basalts. Basaltic andesites and andesites from Site 458 (Mariana fore-arc region) are more depleted than mid-ocean ridge basalts and show different geochemical behavior for Zr-, Hf, and Ti when compared on an extended Coryell- Masuda plot. The primordial chondritic nature and large-scale heterogeneities in the mantle: evidence from high and low partition coefficient elements in oceanic basalts ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Joron, J.l.; Treuil, M..
Large-scale heterogeneities in the mantle are investigated through trace elements measured in oceanic basalts from different locations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The study relies upon the physico-chemical properties of the elements and their classification according to their partition coefficients. High partition coefficient elements (Co, Ni; Cr) have concentrations in peridotite that are not sensitive to solidliquid equilibrium (partial melting); the mantle should therefore be homogeneous with respect to these elements. The ratios of elements that have equal or very similar low partition coefficients (Y/Tb, Zr/Hf and Nb/Ta) are constant in all samples studied, despite their large concentration range. These ratios are equal to chondritic ratios and...

Trace elements in basalts from 23°n and 36°n in the atlantic ocean: fractional crystallization, partial melting, and heterogeneity of the upper mantle ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri; Treuil, M.; Joron, J.l..
From a study of first-transition series trace elements and low-partition-coefficient trace elements or so-called hygromagmatophyle elements (Treuil and Varet, 1973; Treuil and Joron, 1976), we will try to define the relative importance of the three fundamental parameters- mantle source composition, extent of partial melting, and crystal fractionation-which bear on the formation of basalts recovered during Leg 45.We relate the presented data to the results of shipboard study (Chapters 7 and 8, this volume) and then give a tentative interpretation, taking into account our present knowledge of the behavior of trace elements during magmatic processes of FAMOUS and Leg 37 results. From intracratonic extension to nature spreading in back arc basins: Examples from the Okinawa, Lau and, North Fiji basins ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean Marie; Boespflug, X; Bougault, Henri; Dosso, Laure; Foucher, Jean-paul; Joron, J-l; Ruellan, Etienne; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidence only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compared to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intermediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in the...

Distribution of first series transition metals in rocks recovered during DSDP Leg 22 in the northeastern indian ocean ArchiMer
Bougault, Henri.
Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn have been analyzed from Sites 211, 213, 214, 215,and 216 of DSDP Leg 22 of the Glomar Challenger in the northeastern Indian Ocean. According to these trace elements, three different types of source material are broadly defined : the basin floor basalts with a composition similar to tholeiites from mid-oceanic ridges, the basalts and the differentiated rocks from the Ninetyeast Ridge, and the diabase and amphibolite from Site 211. In this paper the notion of stabilization energy in a ligands field is summarized, analytical techniques used are described, and certain conclusions based on the results are presented.

Bougault, Henri.
The concentrations of high partition coefficient elements Co, Ni, Cr do not Vary or Vary little in the solid phase and the liquid phase as partial melting proceeds. For nickel and cobalt concentrations do not depend on the nature of the solid and the model of partial melting chosen. Quantitatively, the calculated value of the concentrations of these elememts in the liquid agrees with the concentrations found for undifferentiated tholeiitic samples. In so far, large variations of chromium and nickel found in oceanic tholeiites evidence the fractional crystallization process. Cobalt on one hand, nickel and chromium on the other give constraint in regard of the proportions of principal minerals crystallizing. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
