Aspectos biológicos de Stellifer stellifer (Bloch) na pesca artesanal do camarão sete-barbas, Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina, Brasil Zoologia
Almeida,Laura Ribas de; Branco,Joaquim Olinto.
Stellifer stellifer (Bloch, 1790) is one among the most abundant ictiofauna species which are caught by sea-bob-shrimp's artisanal fishery in Armação do Itapocoroy. Aiming to analyze its population structure, a total of 1459 specimens were collected from July/1996 to August/1997. Stellifer stellifer presented lengths varying between 3,7 and 17,7 cm, macroscopic sex differentiation started from 6,0cm, with a higher frequency of females (sex ratio = 1:3,2). The relationship between length and weight was Wt = 0,0073Lt3,1415. First maturation size was determined for females (7,5 cm) and males (8,1 cm). The fishery acts in a similar way on juveniles and adults. Stellifer stellifer presented two spawning seasons, one in spring and another in autumn.

Reprodução de Sterna hirundinacea Lesson e S. eurygnatha Saunders (Aves, Laridae), no litoral de Santa Catarina, Brasil Zoologia
Branco,Joaquim Olinto.
On the Brazilian coast, those species nest sympatrically, from the islands of Espírito Santo State to Santa Catarina State. From 1999 to 2002 a sampling program was implanted with the objectives of studying the breeding of S. hirundinacea and S. eurygnatha along Santa Catarina coast. The size of colonies in number of couples, reproduction strategy, length, width, weight and the volume of the eggs, as well as bill length and weight of the nestlings were determined. S. hirundinacea youth weight/length relationship was estimated and the reproductive success of the terns colonies was also determined.

Reproduction and demographic trends of Sula Leucogaster at the Moleques do Sul Archipelago, Santa Catarina, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Fracasso,Hélio Augusto Alves; Moraes-Ornellas,Valéria dos Santos.
The Brown Booby, Sula Leucogaster, is one of the most common species of marine birds of the Brazilian coast and, in spite of being a viable subject for long-term studies, in Brazil there are scarce demographic descriptions of this species obtained from observations made in sets of consecutive years. This paper presents breeding information collected in monthly samples taken in the Moleques do Sul Island, Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, during a five year period. The main island was divided into three different study areas, in which adult censuses were conducted, along with counts of number of nests, eggs, chicks and incubating adults. No significant change was found in these numbers during the sampled years and the breeding season extended over the entire...

Fracasso,Hélio Augusto Alves; Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Barbieri,Edison.
Cabot's Terns Thalasseus acuflavidus (Latham, 1737) are widely distributed along the Atlantic coast of South America from the Caribbean Islands (12º S) to the region of Porto Deseado, Argentina (46º S). Daily observations were conducted on the Cardos Island during 2003, 2005 and 2006 to determine timing and nesting success, and the reproductive biology of the Cabot's Terns nesting there. The first adults arrived at the colony from 22 April to 15 May during the three years recorded; a total of 144 nests were recorded in 2003, 174 in 2005 and 50 in 2006. Observed incubation time was 24.1 ± 0.35 days, and mean egg size was 5.15 ± 0.02 cm in length and 34.30 ± 0.25 g in weight. Hatching success was lowest in 2003 and highest in 2006, with natural causes (such...

Sedrez,Mário Cesar; Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Freitas Júnior,Felipe; Monteiro,Herbert Silva; Barbieri,Edison.

Bycatch fauna of seabob shrimp trawl fisheries from Santa Catarina State, southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Freitas Júnior,Felipe; Christoffersen,Martin Lindsey.
Marine communities in tropical regions contain a great diversity of species that play key roles in ecological processes. The observed bycatch fauna in artisanal fishing for the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) in the southwest Atlantic exceeds the quantity of commercial shrimp captured. This bycatch has not been previously inventoried extensively in Brazil, particularly in the State of Santa Catarina, where small-scale shrimp fisheries is a traditional activity and dominates the local fishing economy. Six municipalities were sampled three times a month, from 1996 to 2011, yielding 216 species belonging to the bycatch (7 cnidarians, 22 mollusks, 42 crustaceans, 11 echinoderms, and 134 fishes). Bycatch management is a pressing aspect of...

A comparison of foraging between the South American and Cabot's Tern in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Fracasso,Hélio Augusto Alves; Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Barbieri,Edison.
Despite being widely distributed in South America and having relatively large populations, little is known about the trophic ecology of the South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea) and Cabot's Tern (Thalasseus acuflavidus). In Brazil, South American and Terns Cabot's breed in mixed colonies from the state of Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina. Here, we describe results of a study of the feeding ecology of these two species during the reproductive seasons of April to October of 2003, 2005 and 2006 from Cardos Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A total of 6248, 5140, and 4006 fishes were delivered to chicks or females by South American Terns; and 1157, 628 and 98 fish and or other prey items by Cabot's Terns during the breeding seasons of 2003, 2005, and 2006,...

Seasonal Variation in the Abundance of Seabirds in Areas of Mariculture BABT
Branco,Joaquim Olinto; Braun,Jan Raphael Reuter; Verani,José Roberto.
Mariculture has emerged as a complementary income for small fishermen along the coast of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, causing significant alterations in the coastal landscape and creating a new substratum seabirds. From March 1998 to February 1999, 48 censuses were carried out at four sample times, registering an average annual occurrence of 4448.7 birds, distributed among five seabird species. Laridae dominated in diversity and abundance, contributing with 98.1% of the birds recorded. The number of birds per float varied depending on the time of day and season of the year, showing an average of 2.09/1. Seabirds use the mariculture area as a place to rest, to clean their feathers and to overnight.
